The agony Jesus endures in the Garden

Wed Mar 21"t

is

heartbreaking and inspires awe. Our Lord feels loneliness before the bitter cup the Father extends to him via the hands of an angel. Like the posture he will assume when nailed to the cross, Jesus shows his

strength through humble acceptance

and

redemption.

It's where lovers go; where love

is

declared and tested.

This is important in understanding the drama of our Lord's agony in the Garden. It is the drama inside of love. It is the drama of acceptance and abandonment, trust and generosity, life and death. lesus knows this and goes into the Garden to do what Adam failed to do in the first Garden. He goes to pay the price of love. He engenders new life by giving his own. He looks at the chalice, the price of our salvation, and with a heart full of generous, uncomplicated love, accepts the Father's invitation. "Not my will but yours be done."

Encounter Alefa Alefa is a mother, grandmother and farmer. She provides her three children, three grandchildren and husband by selling her crops. lf they fail during one of Malawi's rainy seasons-or in a drought-her family goes hungry. One particularly difficult year, Alefa was

for

forced to sell some of her land to make ends meet.

She knew she had to start planting crops that could withstand Malawi's changing climate. So, she attended a CFiS-sponsored seed fair, where farmers learn the best crops to plant for the upcoming year, and receive vouchers so they can choose the seeds and supplies they need. Besides rice, Alefa bought corn, cabbage and tomato seeds. This way, she can continue farming rice but also feel confident that, even if her rice fails, she will have other crops to sell.

"This harvest will provide food, shelter and education for my family," she says. ln a few short months, Alefa will be growing corn and harvesting hope. Learn more about CFIS'work in Malawi.

Come join us as we continue to have the Thursday Young Adult Bible studies during Lent. The passages we go over are inspired from the following day's Gospel reading (the calendar is available on usccb.org). Project St. Don's young adult ministry is mostly young \^/omen. We totally understand the difficulties associated with periods. All women have the right to live their life with dignity regardless of rich or poor. Young adults are doing this project for the emergency shelters serving our area. We are collecting menstrual hygiene products so that we can help some of the homeless women in need, because there shouldn't be a question of "Food or Sanitary napkin?" Currently, we are looking for donations of the following items: 1. Heavy flow overnight sanitary pads 2. Regular flow sanitary pads 3. Pantiliners Please deposit the items in the bins at the church with the label Period Project. Last date for donations is March 26th (Monday). Due to hygiene reasons we do not accept opened napkins. Thank you so much for your understanding. Let's bring change in the life of others, even if the least way possible

Aloha Parents, Parishioners, and Visitors of Sts. Peter and Paul Church Our class consists of Pre K and first grade children age between 4, 5 and 6. We lay the foundation for these little angels and teach them how to say simple prayers llke the "Our Father", "Hail Mary" and the "Glory Be". We start our class with an opening prayer and then we take them through the gospel of the day in a story form, and we have question and answers just to make

sure that all the children are listening, they are so eager to answer and all their hands go up, it gives us such pleasure to see how interested these little ones are to know about "JESUS", after that we have a coloring session where the children use all their imagination and color the page which is based on the Gospel reading. Each child wants to do the best and is so engrossed. Thanks to Father Khanh, Ms. Yvonne and Ms. Iwalani. For the TV and beautiful Bible Story CDs, the children inspired by these stories, as each story has a lesson that teaches the little ones to be good children, to listen to their parents, to share, to love and much more. We wind up the class with a thank you prayer, asking our Lord to bless and protect all of us and keep us safe during the coming week. Thank you,

Deqru?nd/Te, I feel self-conscious striking my breast at Mass. Isn't this gesture rather exaggerated? Romart Missal proscribes that the assembly strike their breasts Th. "through I at my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous

fault" during the Confiteor. It doesn't specify striking three times. Later in Eucharistic Prayer I, the priest strikes his breast with his right hand, saying, "To us, also, your servants, who, though sinners...." Clasping our hands in front of our breast is a recognized gesture of prayer; striking the heart or breast is an ancient penitential expression. It calls to mind ]esus' parable of two men who prayed in the Temple, a prideful Pharisee and a humble tax collector who "beat his breast and prayed, 'O God, be mercifulto me a sinner"' (Luke lB:13). "Gestures, language, and actions are the physical, visible, and public expressions by which human beings understand and manifest their inner life" (Built of Livirr.g Sfones, NCCB/USCC, 2000). The liturgy has a rich tradition of movements that can foster or distract from prayer. "When the gestures are done in common, they contribute to the unity of the worshiping assembly. Gestures which are broad and full in both a visual and tactile sense support the entire symbolic ritual" (Environment and Art in Catholic tVorship, 56). Thus, at Mass we bow our heads, bend our knees, and beat our breasts out of humility and reverence for God, "for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted" (Luke 18:14).
