Sts. Peter and Paul Church GOOD NEWS! Jesus presents a different way of seeing, hearing, and judg-
ing. lt takes some getting used to! Peter, as a good friend, wants to protect Jesus from the cross he is announcing. Yet Jesus doesn't want protection from the will of the Fatherrather he wants support. He invites Peter to change his mentality. Jesus knew what was coming; he must suffer and be reject-
ed. Suffering and rejection are not absolute evils. Our goal in
life can't be to avoid suffering and to be accepted by everyone. lf we pursue good and follow Jesus, we will also experience rejection. When Jesus tells us that following him means taking up our cross, it shouldn't surprise us when a cross is planted in our path with a sign saying, "Pick me up." ln the first reading, the prophet says he opened his ear and
didn't rebel. When the consequences of this faith were abuse and rejection, he didn't shield his body and face. He could do so because, like Jesus, he was rooted in love and not fear. He didn't fear their arguments, ideas, and insults. He didn't fear what they could do to his body, for they couldn't touch his

have been rare to flnd an unmarried man woman living together as roommates. Today, however, it's fairly common. Sometimes these arrangements are dictated by finances-a homeowner or renter finds he or she can't afford to live alone so the person seeks a roommate. Other times it's a result of friendship. In many ways this is a positive development-it shows we've learned to have

There's nothing immoral about inhabiting the same home. However, when a ioint real-estate venture is more than a business deal and involves eventual marriage, there are hazards. It's important for the couple to be very clear about what they're doing. Buying a home is a huge commitment. They should remember that real estate is one commitment, marriage is another, and they aren't interchangeable. It would be easy for one partner to insist on the house for economic reasons when the ioint purchase is really an attempt to seal the marriage deal in advance. Buying a house together could create marriage pressures, making it difficult to back out due to a change of heart. Such arrangements are full of possibilities for misunderstanding, disappointment, and anger. Unless it's clear that joint home ownership is-until marriage-iust a business deal (and clear legal contracts are drawn up), it's not advisable.
