SAIII'TS PETER

& PAUL First Sunday of Lent March 2019

Dear Parishioners and Friends in Christ,

There are times in life when we are called upon to act. At the beginning of this year, my sister informed me that my mom's health was rapidly declining. struggled with the decision to rush home to embrace and comfort my mom or carry-on my responsibility as a parish priest. When the news of her passing came a week later, my heart led me to fulfill the duty of a son. I

Today, our parish is faced with the reality of the acquisition of the 771 Amana Street property, the former HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union, adjacent to our church. Many of you may recall, the property was offered in 2009 and while the decision body of the church acted on the opportunity, their efforts fell short.

However, in 2A09, our former pastor, Fr. David Travers developed a plan to address the expansion over the parking lot or expand the upper floor without taking any parking space. The estimated cost of this renovation plan was $4.8 m

illion.

God often works through obvious circumstances. When he closes one door, he oPens another. The 771 Amana Street prope.rty was again offered to our parish in July 2A18. Marlene De Costa, Diocesan Real Estate Director had this to say, "This open door may never come again, ever."

the Lord to guide us, the church responded and made an offer on 771 Amana Street. ln November, we were notified that our offer had been accepted and we are now actively pursuing the required due diligence. We are nervous in this decision and not blind about the risk involved and the financial burden it carries. But we will make the best effort to walk through this door of new opportunity as we are called upon to act. Last year, with

For these reasons, we need facilities for our Faith Formation classes and more parking to accommodate those who come to our weekend Masses. Currently, we rent the 2"d floor in the 771 Amana Street building for our Faith Formation classes every weekend as well as a meeting place during the week for various ministries and church activities.

Knkrkn Srnrer o Honrollltr, Hnwnii 9b814 o {ttolt) 941-Obl,

ln addition to the 50 stalls that we have in our church parking, the current owner has allowed us to use 25 stalls on his property.

Should the property 771 Amana Street, and the adjacent neighbor with whom we have had a parking agreement, be purchased by another owner or developer, we may not have the same generosity that is provided to us. Then the question will be, where will we house our Faith Formation program and where will we offer additional parking to at least 250 parishioners who attend each Sunday Mass on the iueekend? Where would Sts. Peter and Paul b,e with the changes that would greatly impact us? Just as I was called to act upon my mom's death, we are now collectively called upon to act on the future and the life of our community of St. Peter and Paul church, so as to secure the continuation of the legacy of our people. Let us pray as we embark on the feasibility study and the preparation of our Sts. Peter and Paul's Golden Anniversary, that we may have the strength to nurture the vitality as we journey the next decade together. As Mother Theresa said, "God does not ask us to do great things, but oniy little things with greater love." Gratefull y Yours,

Fr. Khanh

Use your fasdng, not to impress God

The Forty Days of Lent parallel the 40 days which Jesus spent in fasting and prayer in the wilderness (among many "40" references in the Bible). Sundays are not counted as days of Lent. Good Friday and Easter Vigil, while technically not in Lent, are counted as part ofthe 40 days.

It does little good to give up dessert, but then to grumble at your childrent need for attention. Fast from some of your private pursuits to become food for your family and friends. Fast from anger, blame, and entitlement; feast on forgiveness, affirmation, and the common good.

Alr-nsqivir"rc: Connect your almsgiving to your fasting so that self-denial becomes other-enhancement. If you skip a daily latte, give the money to a local food bank. If you have limited financial means, supplement your alms by giving ofyour time and talent. Volunteer at a soup kitchen or become a minister of care at your parish. Let your own poverty, whatever it may be, enrich the lives of others. Give generously, not just from the leftovers, but from the "first fruits" of your table.

Stations of the Cross: In the early Church, Christians would make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to retrace the steps ofJesus on his way to the cross. As the Church grew, such a pilgrimage became unrealistic and a tradition was born to retrace the steps of Jesus by reflecting on pictures that depicted those steps. During Lent, especially on Fridays, Catholics reflect on the crucifixion ofJesus by praying the Stations of the Cross, which has become a time-honored tradition.

First Sunday of Lent Learning From Jesus’ Temptations Sts. Peter and Paul Church

GOOD NEWS! Every Lent, priests, nuns, monks, and many laypeople pray the following: “Be sober and vigilant. STATIONS OF THE CROSS A prayer form that is most often associated with the season of Lent, the Way of the Cross (as it is formally called) is a prayer for all seasons. The idea of this prayer came from the ancient practice of pilgrimage. Some who had particular spiritual burdens to discharge, penances to do, or needs to intercede for would make the long journey to the Holy Land on foot in search of the special graces attached to the land where Christ had walked. Obviously, this took considerable time and resources to accomplish, and not everyone could make the journey even once in a lifetime. But the spiritual benefits of a pilgrimage were enormous, not the least of which was the community that often spontaneously formed along the way for protection, mutual encouragement, and fellowship. The final leg of the journey was to follow the Via Dolorosa, or Way of Sadness—the route that Jesus presumably took through Jerusalem to Calvary with his cross. It was this final stage of pilgrimage that led to the idea of the stations, or stops, that Jesus took along that last sad street. from LoyolaPress.com Schedule of Stations of the Cross (Ministries leading prayer) March 15th 11:15AM —Legion of Mary 6:00 PM—Kupuna & Faith Formation Families March 22nd 11:15 AM—Devotional Team 6:00 PM—Hospitality Ministry

Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to live and work in the world. In this principle, Life and Dignity of the Human Person, Jesus reminds us that we are all made in God's image and likeness. That means that every human being has a special value and a purpose. We need to care for each other so we can be the people God calls us to be.

Encounter Norma For young families living in the mountains of Guatemala, raising a baby can be hard. Most families grow corn and beans for a living, but a long-standing drought has caused harvests to shrink. There are few job opportunities, which means putting food on the table is a daily challenge. That’s why when Norma discovered she was pregnant, she wondered how she would manage. “When I was young, my mom and dad didn’t have money to buy much food,” she says. “My mom would split one egg among four children.” Norma wanted more for her son, Victor.

But at age 20, she didn’t have much experience beyond If you are able to volunteer please come at helping her mother around the house. So, she looked for help. She found it in a CRS-sponsored program that 11:00 a.m. to check in. Plus, CRS provided Norma with food strangers. Strong bodies needed to help carry throughout her pregnancy and monthly medical checkboxes to the cars. ups during Victor’s first two years of life. Do you know someone in our parish who would benefit from receiving a food bag to help them make ends meet? Please tell them to contact our Catholic Care Helpline (808) 941-0675 All information we receive remains confidential.

“I learned a lot of beautiful things,” Norma says. “I learned how to take care of my boy and what foods to feed him so that he can grow healthy and strong.” Now, Norma is sharing what she learned with others as a “mother monitor.” “It makes me proud to share the experience I had and the lessons I learned with other women,” she says. It makes Norma proud—and makes her community a better place to raise a family. 3

FAITH FORMATION YOUTH MINISTRY

RCIA

This semester at youth ministry we will be diving deeper into each Fruit of the Holy Spirit which will be themed with different superheroes to recognize the good qualities and lessons to be learned from things in popular media. This past week (March 8th) we focused on charity and generosity. The youth learned about them through the fun example of Supergirl and, ultimately, through the example of the great love and generosity of God the Father and the Death of Jesus Christ. The youth shared how the workings of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives can help us be better people and live in a way that deepens God’s presence within us as children of God.

We celebrate the Rite of Election today with the Bishop. As we get ready for the Easter Sacraments we will be celebrating the Rite of Scrutinies, so please keep us in your prayers.

Youth Ministry meets every 2nd and 4th Friday evening of each month. The next gathering will be on Friday, March 22, 6:30-8:30pm. Youth Ministry Recap Friday, February 22, 2019 "Fruits of the Holy Spirit"

At our last meeting, we discussed the workings of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The youth learned that the Holy Spirit was sent to all of us by Jesus through our Baptism and Confirmation to be our Comforter and Guide. We reviewed the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit and discussed how they can help us be better people and live in a way that deepens God's presence within us as children of God. This semester, we will be diving deeper into each Fruit of the Holy Spirit which will be themed with different superheroes to recognize the good qualities and lessons to be learned from things in popular media.

History of the Scrutinies The rites of the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent don’t have the most comforting of names. On these days we engage the elect in rites and prayers called scrutinies and exorcisms. In the earliest ritual books of the church, the exorcisms and scrutinies seemed to be separate events sometimes celebrated on a daily basis. By the 12th century, the elect participated in only one exorcism on Saturday morning. With the renewal of the initiation rites, the scrutiny is meant not simply to critiques and assess one’s readiness, but “to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect” and “to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good” (RCIA 141). At its core, the scrutinies are not about the sinfulness of the elect but about the overwhelming grace of God in Christ. Schedule of rites First Scrutiny—March 23 at 5 PM 2nd Scrutiny—March 31 at 7AM Mass 3rd Scrutiny—April 7 at 11AM Mass

Note: The readings for these Masses will follow the Cycle A readings (Option for RCIA) in our Breaking Bread.

Chrism Mass with Bishop Larry Silva The Chrism Mass is the annual liturgy where oils for use in administering the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick are blessed. Representatives from island parishes, and military and ethnic Catholic communities, bring their oils to the designated parish for that island in baskets and sleek glass containers.
