Tociay's Readings have

that we fail to step back

and

comprehend their meaning. So take a moment to relax and listen carefully to the message of these readings.

The First Reading is from the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel (37:12-{4). At the time of this story, the people of lsrael are captives in Babylon, languishing as if they were "dry bones in the desert." Through this vision of the dry bones, God tells the Prophet to announce that He will in time restore the exiled people of Judah. This will not be a return to their former status and shame under the Monarchy, but to a new life govemed not by kings and princes but by the Holy Spirit dwelling within thern. So, when you feel "down" or depressed call on the Holy Spirit. He is within all who are baptized and waiting for our call.

The Second Reading is fron: St. Paul's Leffer fo the Romans (8:8-11). Paul gives the Romans and all of us an updated teaching similar to that of the Prophet Ezekiel above. "Updated" be-cause this writing comes from a time after Christ's Resurrection and the Holy Spirit has been poured out on all mankind to guide us back to the Father. lf we do not have the Spirit dwelling within us, we will be like those "dry bones in the desert^" So "ask and you shall receive!"

The Gospel Reading is from the Gospel of John (11:1-45). Here we have an extensive teaching by Jesus but it is buried in a long story, one that everyone has heard many times. We are all captivated by the spectacular story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead and rightly so. However, this is not the essence of this Gospel message. The real message is Jesus' siatement, "l am the resarrecfion and the life, efc." Through this story and His siatement, iesus is telling all mankind that He is in control of both physical and spiritual life and we only need to have His Holy Spirit dwelling within us, guiding us, to partake of His resurrection. "Do you believe this?. Can you respond with the same answer as Martha did? Throughout the season of Lent, we have several vivid stories in the Gospel of John depicting the Giff of Eternal Life through our belief in Jesus; Rebirth in the story of Nicodernus (John 3); Living Water in the story of the Samaritan Woman (John 4); Life Giving Word in the cure of the Centurion's son (John 5); and most of all the Bread of Life in (John 6). So, if you missed the point of any of these readings, now would be a good time to go back and get acquainted with the real message behind the story. Something to think about during your Prayer Time this week!

Chrism Mass Celebration ft>r Oahu wfith Bishop Larry Silva presiding

EALYEAIW FOR APRTL 2A77

Everybody is invited to celebrate the Chrism Mass for the island of Oahu on Thursday, April 6, 2017. 7;00pm t the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa.

Universal: Youth That young people may respond generously to their vocations and seriously consider offering themselves to Cod in the priesthood or consecrated life.

At the Chrism Mass, Bishop Silva formally blesses oilve oil in large containers to be distributed to all the parishes priests throughout the island. Three oils are bressed at this annual Mass:

. .

The Oil of Catecumens - is used to bless people prior to their Baptism and during enrollment as catechumen, students of the faith preparing for

AEBII._P.BAYEB

Baptism.

]

The Oil of the Sick - is appropriate when administering the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, formerly know as Extreme Unction. Chrism Oil- is for newly baptized persons. The Bishop also uses Chrism Oilwhen administering the Sacraments of Confirmation or Holy Orders. Like Cil of the Sick and Oit of Catechumens, Carism is made from olive oil but unlike the other two, balsam is added to rnake it more fragrant and appealing to the nose.

Please pray

We thank Cisero Seisdedos and his family, Ana Claudia and Ana Carolina, who wifl represent Sts. peter and paul

rm$week Join your parish and the whole Church in celebrating the Holiest Days of the Year.

The Easter Triduum begins Holy Thursday and has no dismissal until the night of the Easter Vigil. On Thursday we celebrate the lnstitution of the Holy

Eucharist. On Friday we remember in a solemn way the death of Jesus and pray for the whole humankind. We hear the lsaiah reading of the Suffering Servant and we venerate the Cross. This is the only day of the year when Holy Mass is not celebrated. On Saturday (there is no 5:oo p.m. Mass) we celebrate the longest, most beautiful of the Church's liturgies. We light the Easter fire and process into a darken church. We read the story of our salvation and bring to the waters of Baptism and the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist those who have been preparing all year.

Dean?nd)Te, What happened to "hellfire and brimstone" preaching, like I remember from parish missions in my younger years? f-f ellfire and brimstone recalls Genesis 19:24: "The LORD rained down I Isulfur upon Sodom and Gomorrah, fire from the LoRD out of heaven." It refers to a harsh preaching style and "doom and gloom" content focused on God's wrath, punishment, and hell. Puritans-those English Calvinists who colonized Massachusetts in the 1600s-adhered strongly to their belief in eternal damnation, innate sin, and diabolical power. Likewise, American Baptists were known to "out-Calvin Calvin" in their preaching.

WhileCatholicsalsoadherestronglytoourbelief'ffi* in the possibility of eternal damnation, innate q* sin, and evii forces, we believe in the grace of ;w .:lrjr:j, baptism to remove original sin, the outpouring of God's grace to strengthen our lrreakness due to originai sin, and in the extraordinary po\ /er of conversicn to preverlt everiasting damnation. To that end, parish missions and revivals strengthen the spiritual life of the faithful and welcome lapsed Catholics. Preaching orders have been conducting missions since their eariiest days in America. Saint Alphonsus encouraged his Redemptorist missionaries to be lions in the pulpit and lambs in the confessional. One preacher in the 1850s described the flres of hell with such intensity that the nearby flre engine crew was mistakenly dispatched to the church to extinguish the conflagration. Yet the fire most desirable during a mission is the one in people's hearts for God. "Fear of God" means a dread for God's iudgment, but it can also mean a reverential marvel for God. Mlany preachers today prefer to instiil that awe for God's inviting mercy instead of a paraiyzing fear of God's anger. Fr. Byron Miller, CSsR su
