First Sunday Of Advent God’s Promise Of Real Treasure Sts. Peter and Paul Church

December 2, 2018

GOOD NEWS! If anyone can keep a promise, it’s God. His very nature is to be faithful to his promises and to fulfill all he has foretold. His promise after the fall of Adam and Eve was to send us a Redeemer, to bring peace to Jerusalem, and to reestablish his reign on earth. The prophets continually reminded the chosen race of God’s fidelity and, although things looked far from their fulfillment, they insisted that God is faithful and would deliver. Jesus, the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promise, comes in two phases. First, by coming as a baby in Bethlehem. This Incarnation and his arrival as Savior is what we’re preparing to receive this Advent. Extra prayers, generous giving of your time, and special sacrifices are the best way to ready your soul for his coming. Jesus’ Second Coming will bring to completion what he started on the cross. His glorious return, which all of creation will foretell in those last days, is when the full effects of Christ’s victory on the cross will be seen at the judgment of all living creatures. The advice for all Christians in this period of waiting and preparation is to keep watch; to not allow the delay to lead us to drowsiness. Don’t let the vanities of this world dazzle us, for in time, they will become dust. God promises real treasures that will endure forever, and as we know, God keeps his promises. —Fr. Mark Haydu, LC For Reflection: Am I preparing my soul for Christ’s coming by prayer, fasting, and almsgiving? Reading I - Jeremiah 33:14-16

Jeremiah brought hope to the people by telling them that God’s promises had not been forgotten by God. David’s dynasty had been destroyed, but out of the remaining stump a new shoot would grow. Reading II - 1 Thessalonians 3:12-4:2

Those in Thessalonica were becoming impatient waiting for Christ’s return and had reverted to bad conduct. Paul prayed that their hearts would be strengthened. Reading III - Luke 21:25-28, 34-36

Jesus warned his followers about the signs of destruction. However this destruction was not to be feared. Even in the midst of devastation we can see God’s redemptive power. YOUTH “Saints & Relics”—October 26th

Aloha Parishioners, Families, Friends and Visitors, Beginning on October 7th this year we initiated Our Lady of Fatima Family Rosary. Every Sunday a family graciously accepts to bring our Blessed Mother into their humble homes and pray the rosary daily as a family. The families have shared amazing experiences that are simply heartwarming and memorable. We would like to share their reflections with you throughout the year. Reflections

We welcomed Mr. Peter Cruz who gave a slideshow presentation of various Saints and also brought some relics of some youth’s confirmation patron Saints that he gathered. From his presentation the youth learned about: • The lives of some saints including St. Francisco, St. Jacinta, St. Rose of Viterbo, Bl. Imelda Lambertini, and Bl. Rolando Rivi. The 3 classes of relics: • 1st Class relic—Christ's Passion Relic or bodily remains of a Blessed/Saint • 2nd Class relic—Personal item used by a Blessed/Saint • 3rd Class relic—Item touched to a 1st or 2nd Class relic. A brief summary of the sainthood process • The Communion of Saints is a family that works together to help one another achieve heaven through prayers, works, and most especially the Holy Eucharist.

It was such a blessing that we were able to take Blessed Mother home with us the first week. I really wanted her because it was the same week that we were celebrating the 10th Anniversary of my daughter’s death. We are used to praying everyday and it was so nice to hear the grandkids saying “Good morning Mother Mary!” (Misech Ohana) Praying the rosary as a family brought me back in time! It reminded me of my days growing up. I was glad to see our children were able to understand what we were doing and why. We took turns daily to be in charge of leading the rosary. We were fortunate to have an uncle visiting from Astoria who joined us in the rosary and a dinner with our entire Ohana afterwards. My uncle was very impressed with Wyatt leading the rosary! “Prayer is Powerful”, shared Donayri. (Donayri Ohana) The Family That Prays Together Stays Together. A slogan created by Fr. Patrick Peyton, C.S.C.

Mr. Peter Cruz allowed the youth time to prayerfully connect with the saints through the relics.

Advent Prayer God of Love, Your son, Jesus, is your greatest gift to us. He is a sign of your love. Help us walk in that love during the weeks of Advent, As we wait and prepare for his coming. We pray in the name of Jesus, our Savior. Amen.

It was a wonderful time of prayer and talking to God who helps us through the saints.

This past Friday, we prepared for Advent by making Advent wreaths for our homes and families.

?nd;TE,

Monday DECEMBER 3 St.

Fra*cis Xavier, Priest

I noticed in CIur Sunclay bulletin that our parish is setting up a Jesse tree and a giving tree for Advent. What are these trees?

Is 2:1-5

Mt 8:5-11 Tuesday DECEMBER 4 Advent Weekday ls 11:1-10

and famiiies use the Iesse tree and the giving tree as two distinct ways to prepare for the coming of ]esus, the child king. We use the Jesse tree to remember |esus' cwn royal family tree. The Gospel of Matthew traces ]esus' genealogy back to Abraham (1:1-17), while Luke lists his ancestors back to Adam (3:23-ZB). The purpose is to connect lesus to Abraham and Adam, and convey the historical longing of the Chosen People for a messiah. Throughout Advent, names of significant figures in Israelite history and quotations from the Hebrew Testament are hung on the branches. Usually, the lesse tree is placed in a prominent position, in church or at home, so ail can see the history of fesus unfold as we get ever closer to Christmas. The giving tree challenges each parish family or member to buy a gift for someone in need. The parish sets up a tree that is decorated with tags suggesting gifts for those in need. Clothing sizes and children's ages are connected with the requests on the tree, so that the givers can easily get the needed items and take their gifts to the church by a designated date. The gifts are then distributed before Christmas. Thre giving tree unites us to ttre great message Jesus continues to give us at Christmas: Whatever you do to the least of these, you do to me (see Matthew 25:40).
