Today the entire

Church

READINGS

celebrates the great Feast of Pentecost, the coming 0f the Holy Spirit, and the pouring out of His

graces and benefits on all the baptized. This is the official birthdate of the Church.

Because there

are

different readings for the Saturday Vigil Mass and the Sunday Masses and they all focus on the event of the first Pentecost. We will use this commentary space to discuss the role of the

Holy Spirit in both our individual lives and in God's Plan of

First Reading

-

Acts 2:1-11

For the first time in their lives, the disciples were hearing the word of God in a way that skuck straight home to their hearts and that they could understand. The power of the Spirit was such that it had given these simple disciples a message and an utterance that could reach every heart.

Salvation.

Years before Christ, the Jews celebrated Pentecost as an annual harvest festival, The word Pentecost comes from the Greek translation for "fifty days," meaning fifty days after the Jewish feast of Passover. For this celebration Jews from all over the world (primarily the Roman empire) came to Jerusalem for the feast. Because Jesus' death and resurrection occurred at Passover Time and His Ascension was forty days later and nearing the celebration of Pentecost, God used this Jewish

holiday

to bring forth the next great gift to

mankind, the

outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The reference to "confusion" in the Tower of Babel story in the First Reading (Saturday Vigil Mass) contrasts with

the "amazement and delight" of the people in the Second Reading (Sunday Masses). The first is a negative caused by evil intent, but the second is a positlve caused by the Holy Spirit's coming for the benefit of all mankind. Prior to Christ's death and resurrection, the Holy Spirit was not available to man, but now He is being poured out on all mankind for our benefit, grace and spiritual direction.

The Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Trinity (and God) now takes up His role in God's Plan of Salvation. After Jesus Christ established the groundwork for the Church and left it in the hands of His apostles, He promised to remain with them forever (Matt: 28:20). This could not be done in physical form because His human nature was subject to the limitations of all human beings. So He is with us in the spiritual form of the Holy Spirit and continues to be with the Church (the People of God) forever. The coming of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost after Jesus'Ascension marks the of{icial beginning of the Catholic Church, and we celebrate it as the birthday of the Church.

The Holy Spirit's role is to guide and guard

the

institutional Church, and each of us as individuals, back to the Father to be united with Him forever when our time on earth is

over. This sounds clear and easy enough, but unfortunately many people do not listen to the Holy Spirit trying to direct them. Such neglect is the cause of most of our worldly, as well as, personal problems. You are encouraged to pray to the Holy Spirit daily for His guidance and direction and to understand what it is that God would like from you as your part in His plan of Salvation. Something to think about during your Prayer Time this weekl

Second Reading

12-13

-

1 Corinthians l,2:3b-7 ,

The idea of Paul is to stress the essential unity of the Church. But unity does not mean uniformity. Therefore, within the Church there are differing gifts and differing functions, but every one of them is a gift of the same Spirit. And every one of them is designed for the glory of God.

Gospel

-John 2O:19-23

Holy Spirit on the disciples and gives them a commission to go forlh and to remit the sins of the penitent. This is also the commission to the Church today. Jesus breathes the

Folding Seasons By Albert Hayashi

As a teenager, I spent my Friday evenings and Saturdays pre-stuffing and folding newspapers for the Sunday edition of the Los Angeles Trmes. With over a dozen advertising inserts, I would place by left hand above my right hand and grab two advertisements at a time walking from the right side o{ the 15' table to the left inserting the dual handful of paper into a pre-printed section of the newspaper. Paid as a piecework part time employee, I was in a warehouse (most of time alone) stuffing 1500 papers every weekend on Western Ave. in Gardena, CA While my high school friends were at the mall hanging out or cruising around in their cars, every weekend for a dozen hours, I walked along the brick inlayed wall, folding papers, listening to rock music and figuring out how to improve my pre-stufiing newspaper insert rate. lnterrupted only by the sound of an approaching car engine of my parents bringing dinner or lunch, I would continue this job throughout my teenage years

wondering what the purpose was and feeling despair. I was sometimes impatient and could not see any light at the end of the tunnel. God says in Ecclesiates 3:1, "there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens". It was

the season to fold Newspapers.

As the years have passed and through those many weekends folding papers, God has revealed to me the blessing of having parents who offered me opportunities to find the hidden gifts God has provided. I've learned through those early formidable years of folding papers every weekend the beauty and blessings in hard work, steadfastness and dedication. These attributes have followed me through school, work and life. Sometimes we cannot see how God works in our lives. While standing above a pile of church bulletins inserting pre-printed inserts one Saturday morning at Sts. Peter and Paul, I found myself smiling feeling happy not knowing why. The epiphany was I was doing the same thing 30 years ago, but now in the company of Catholic friends using my pre-stuff inserting skills for God I felt comfortable in what I was doing and enjoying this activity lt was not work but pure funl ln Romans 12:6, God states "since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them according...". Here lwas, with a biggest grin and smile on my face listening to Dan Schulte's arrangement of Glory to God pre-stuffing inserts into the church bulletin with Nana and others. It is the season to told Church Bulletins.

As God says in Acts 1 :7, "lt is not for you ta know the times and dates the Father has set by his own authority". What will the folding season be like tomorrow or the day atter? ldon't know and arn not worried. For I know God has a folding plan for rne, you, all of us.

Deqn?adld Why don't Catholics recognize confirmations from other Christian churches if we accept their baptisms? aptism signs us with an indelible mark, it defines our characler. It can never be repeated. A baptism is always held to be valid if a person is baptized r,vith water using the Trinitarian formtil a (CCC 1256).If a priest is unsllre of the validity of a person's baptism, he viould baptize the person conditionall;,, recognizing the earlier baptism if it happened and was valid. The minister of bapiism is r-rsrially an ordained minister, but in necessity anyone can baptize, including a non-Christian if he intends whal the Church intends. Conflrmation aiso leaves an indeiible mark, as does hoiy orders, and they also cannot be repeated. What makes conflrmation different from baptism is that the minister of confirmation is ordinariiy the bishop because this expresses the Apostolic Unity of the Churcl'r (CCC 1312). If someone was confirmed in a Church that has apostolic succession, her conflrmation u,ould be considered valid. But if she was not confirmed in a church with apostolic succession, the Catholic Church wouldn't recognize the confirmation as vaiid, and she would have to be reconfirmed. Ail Christian churches have a common understanding of what the sacrament of baptism is, but r,vhile other churches might have Communion, confirmation, and even ordination, their celebration of the sacraments may not include all the requirements necessary for the Catholic Church to consider them vaiid" Fr.
