Dear Parishioners, Visitors, and Friends,

All of us have extraordinary events

completed

of

celebrating

Christmas and the

Epiphany of the Lord. The extraordinary became ordinary when God's only begotten son became like us in all things excePt sin.

We have now entered the Ordinary Time of the Liturgical Year. Though we are in ordinary time, there is nothing ordinary about it. We have witnessed the extraordinariness in the way we serve one another in the world and in the church. We thank our parishioners, visitors and friends who perform the ordinary routine and make them extraordinary. We are grateful to Our Catholic Care Project and the Hawaii Food Bank Box who provide for those with food insufficiencies. Our appreciation to the ushers and greeters, liturgical ministers, choir, catechists, church cleaners and the many others who willingly give of their time and share their gifts in making others feel special.

As we look forward to our parish's Golden Anniversary on September 28, 2019, we look back to the milestones of our history. We remember all those who were the cornerstone of our parish church. We thank them for the foundatron they iaid and upon which we are building our community We pray that the ordinary routine and planning we now undefiake will bear f ruits for the generations to come. When Bishop Scanlan blessed the beginnings of Sts. Peter and Paul in 1969, he said, "As Ala Moana is the heart of the new Honolu/u, so Sis. Peter and Paul rs its sou/. " Now almost 50 years

later, these words still hold true today and perhaps have even a deeper meaning.

This Sunday and next week, we joyfttlly welcome Fr. Sieg{red Dosdos as Parochial Vicar Please join us rn the courtyard after the 11 a.m. mass to meet Fr. Dosdos and engage in the joy of fellowship

Simon is now Cephas, or rock. His mission is to father the New Testament people in faith. He is to be a solid, unbreakable foundation for his brothers-and eventually the whole Church. His strength comes not from perfection, for we know Peter was weak, but from his acceptance of Jesus' love and call no matter his own weakness.

Similarly, in baptism and confirmation we take new names that come with our new, deeper calls. lt is a meaningful Catholic tradition that parents name their children after a saint who becomes a model for their lives. Like Peter, we are called to greatness by Jesus, who looks at us, names us, and says, "Come follow me." Let's live up to that beautiful, simple invitation!

Once accepted, the call implies a new identity born of a new, deeper relationship. When Jesus calls Simon, he changes his name. ln the Bible, a name change indicates a new mission or purpose. Abram was renamed Abraham to father the OId Testament people

The scene is simple for a reason. Jesu$' call is simple: Follow me. Our response should be simple, too. We often complicate the call with questions, fears, or doubts, wanting clarifications and assurances. But it is a simple imperative that requires a one-word answer: yes or no. Or as Samuel responded, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening."

FAITH FORMATION

RCIA: €V€E ANCI€NT

For the past months, faith formation's K-L students have been having fun learning rnore about

God's unconditional love for them. ln class, students are learning basic prayers as part of their Sunday classroom routine. They also study rnore about the Sunday gospel reading in a simpler and fun way. During class discussion, there were instances where the kids were asked to reenact a scene if not the whole gospel story in front of their classmates. lt is made sure that the kids have a grasp of the gospel reading and its application of it in their own daily lives. All these lessons were reinforced by craft or art activities that are posted in the classroom or brought home. They also have access to animated videos about different saints and bible stories. Some activities are brought home for further learning and application of the lessons with their family.

Your prayers are critical to the success of our prograrn as they continue their journey and discern moving forward in the Rite of Acceptance {to be celebrated Jan. 21at the 1i.:00 a.m. Mass). The journey to the Easter Sacraments is quickly moving forward. Lent begins on February 14th and the Rite of Election is February L8th at the CoCathedral of St. Theresa. Easter falls on April 1.

We continue to meet on Wednesday's until Lent begins, our participants willjoin the community on Sundays with the celebration of the Scrutinies. We invite you to take an active role in welcoming our catechumen and candidates after the 11:00 am mass.

Sundays of Advent, students learned about the Nativity story. They were also given a chance to watch the Nativity story during class. With these, they were able to appreciate and understand more the true meaning of Christmas. They were also given opportunity to be part of the church activities such as the poster making contest sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and the Nativity presentaUon during the

Then she affirmed that her fianc6 had told her so within the hotir. lVhen Sheen askecl, "Did he teli yori before?"

that he told her "l love you" everlr night. Sheen advised irer not to believe him: "FIe is repeating; he is not sire replied

sincere." As Sheen clerreriy demonstrates, the words "l iove you" don't lose meaning with repetition. Likewise, prayer-whether rote or spontaneous-is a way of saying, "I love you" to God. It places us in Gocl's presence, celebrating or:r loving relationship urith him. Saint Teresa of Avila, a doctor of prayer, wrote tn Interior Castle of the Soul that it was important "not to thinir much but to love much" when praying. She even considered it a blessing when her rnind wandered in prayer because it forced her to concentrate on loving Goci rather than merely thinking aboui him! The right form ofpersonal prayer, then, is the one that best expresses our love for God in a spirit cf humility, conf, dence, and perseverance-three requirements needed for true pralier, according to another doctor of the Chr"lrch, St. Alphcnsris Llguori.
