Today we cetebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. The word means to show forth to reveal the gift of Jesus. Traditionatly in many countries, today is the day we exchange gifts with one another just as the Magi fottowed the star to find the newborn king of the Jews, bringing with them gifts of gotd, frankincense and myrrh. "We Three Kings of 1rient are: Eearing gifts we traverse afar " . . Follawing yonder star,. ." Epiphany is a time, which can remind us of all sorts of

spirituatwisdom. We can reftect on light and darkness. 0r we can meditate on our journey to discover the divine. We can took deepty into ourselves to find Cod there in our most inner being. Any of those could easiiy be a reflection unto itsetf.

But sometimes, we can forget the simpte, obvious messages in a story. This might be one of those times. ln one sense, this story shows peopte simp[y going to great [engths to give gifts to someone they feel deserves them. lt really might not be more compticated than that - the living 6od visiting His peopte. Unfortunate[y, in our commercialized environment, many today don't seem to futty grasp this gift as a hetpless baby. Even those longing for the Messiah over 2000 years ago did not recognize that Cod lies in the manger in the flesh. But the Magi did. They followed His Star and came to present him their homage. To be honest (and to my shame) I have not opened your Christmas gifts. I am more appreciative of the giver of gift than the gift itseif. For me, gift giving is best treasured as it represents the giver. I see each gift as a retatlonship, the giver offering oneself to the one receiving the gift. How often I miss that at Christmas and even today at the Feast of the Epiphany.

It is mind-boggting to

see the atmighty Cod, the creator of att become hetptess in human flesh, the most roya[ in a pauper.

History The word Epipharuy comes from the Greek, epiphaneia, meaning "manifestation" or "appearance." This feast origi-

nated

in the Eastern Church and was

celebrated on January 6th to commemorate the many instances of "God shining

forth," including the birth of Christ, the visit of the Magi, and Christt baptism in the Jordan. It was also considered by many to be a Christian fulfillment of the Jewish Festiual of Lights. In the \7est, the Nativity developed as a separate and specific feast, with official references to the Epiphany not coming until 361. Epiphany concluded a rwelve day festival"the twelve days of Christm25"-1[a1

The Light of Christ Theologically, the Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of the messiah to the Gentiles. The Magi story appears exclusively in Matthewt Gospel because this evangelist emphasizes the universal nature of Christt message. Thus, Epiphany helps establish and inspire the Churcht mission of evangelization. The light of Christ is not to be hidden or hoarded: "Your light must shine before others" (Matthew 5:16). Epiphany is also about

tfu, nnnâ‚ŹL? The story of the Magi traveling from the East to see the Christ child appears only in Matthewt Gospel. The word Magi (Greek magoi) means a learned scholar or sage. The Magi (possibly Zoroastrian astrologers from Persia) interpreted a bright star in the Eastern skies as a sign that a great king was to be born. According to St. Ignatius ofAntioch (who lived in the first

centuryAD), 'A star shone forth in heaven above all the other stars, the

light of which was inexpressible, while its novelry struck people with astonishment" (Letter to the Ephesians, 19). The wise men followed this star to Bethlehem of Judea, and upon arriving they worshipped the infant Jesus and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Numerous traditions not directly based on Matthew's Gospel have grown up about the Magi. Typically we think of there being three wise men because of the number of gifts, but Matthew doesn't disclose the exact number. Since the third century, Christian writers have referred to them as kings, even

though Matthew doesnt specifically tell us that they were royalty. Their names, Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar date to the 6th century and are generally thought to represent kings from India, Persia and Arabia respectively.

/Wan4estattnns r{ â‚Ź-nz,st

Thaditionally, three separate Gospel readings were integral parts of the Epiphany liturgy: the Magi worshipping the baby Jesus, the baptism of the Lord and the wedding feast of Cana. In Cycle C of the liturgy, these Gospel passages follow one another each week beginning with Epiphany. Each of these three events expresses something of the depth and breadth of the mystery of Incarnation as it unfolds in the life of Christ and in us.

The Visit of the Magi (Matthew 2:l-12), the Gospel for Epiphany Sunday, is most commonly associated with the manifestation ofJesus' diviniry to the whole world. The Baptism of the Lord (Luke 3:15-16,21-22) is Christt revelation to the Jews and prefigures his descent into his own death and rising in the resurrection. The \Wedding Feast of Cana (John 2:l-ll) is Jesus' revelation of the power of his own diviniry to his apostles and disciples. The new wine, the best wine saved for last, symbolizes the message of the gospel.

Epiphany marks the occasion of the Christian tradition of "chalking the doors." The chalking of the doors is a centuries-old practice throughout the world, though it appears to be somewhat less wellknown in the United States. The formula for the ritual (adapted for 2019) is simple: take chalk and write the following above the entrance of your home:

)O*(*/\*8.19

The letters have two meanings: First, they represent the initials of the Magi, Caspar, Malchior, and Balthazar and secondly, they abbreviate the Latin phrase, Christus mansionem benedicat:, "\.4ay Christ bless the house." The "+" signs represent the cross, and the "20" at the beginning and the "19" at the end mark the year. Thken together, this inscription is performed as a request for Christ to bless the home and the occupants for the coming year.

SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Herod Was Correct Sts. Peter and Paul Church

January 6, 2018

GOOD NEWS! King Herod, the most powerful man in the region, was greatly troubled to hear about the birth of a king. Why would a reigning king fear a little child? Perhaps because he believed if word spread that a future messiah had been born, the Jews would be harder to control. They were easier to dominate when they were without hope, without a leader. Herod was correct. Wise men from the East looking for the King of the Jews fulfilled prophecies that foretold all nations would come to Israel looking for a messianic leader. Herod was also troubled because, if indeed this newborn was a king, he had a pretender and a competitor right under his royal nose. King Herod was correct again. Although Jesus did not pretend to overthrow the Romans, he did come with authority and would upend the existing order. Jesus would preach to the heart and demand that no one sit on that throne except God his Father. The painter Pseudo Domenico presents the arrival of the Magi as a procession of vassals showing homage to their king. Kneeling, bowing, and standing erect with gifts in hand, authorities from far away are showing reverence to the newborn royalty who sits on Mother Mary’s lap. His royal hall is the hillside, his scepter a baby finger, his royal family is Joseph and Mary. These Gentile kings were the first to do what all of creation and all of history have been doing since then—bending their knee to the King of the Universe. Herod was right to worry. — Fr. Mark Haydu, LC For Reflection: Jesus’ reign comes to give security to those who love him. Does his authority and care give me security? Reading I - Isaiah 60:1—6

Isaiah compared the coming of the Messiah to the rising of the sun. The Messiah’s great light will make all heaven and earth into one dazzling universe. All people will be bound together by the radiance of Christ the Lord. Reading II - Ephesians 3:2—3a, 5—6 The high calling of the Apostle Paul was to spread the good news that had remained a secret until Christ’s coming. God is not the exclusive property of a particular race, people, or religion. God will be the Shepherd of all who seek God and of all who serve God. Reading III - Matthew 2:1—12 From the beginning, the Christian faith has been a world religion. Foreigners from a different land and religion paid homage to the new-born child who was destined to become the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The same foreigners who were welcome at his manger are welcome in his kingdom

Forgiveness mqkes good sense "My best friend hurt rne terribly, hasn't apologized and doesn't act sorry. I refuse to forgive her." "When my parents died, my brother took more than his share of their estate. I'll never speak to him again." Refusing to forgiive merely prolongs the hurt feelings and traps us in the past. A "holy hour" is a devotion during which one sets aside an hour lor prayer and meditation before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Try these ideas to make a holy hour: Find a tabemacle with a lit sanctuary lamp. The lamp signifies the presence of Christ. Silence yourself both interiorly and exteriorly. Clear your mind of daily stresses or outside distractions. Start the conversation. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you, then make acts of faith, hope and charity.'Iell Cod hor,r, you believe, trust and love hirn. Ask for rnore faith, hope and love. Adore God. Imagine Christ sitting with you. It's not your love for God, but his for you that saves. God delights in the comparry of his children (Proverbs 8:31). Ifyou can't pray, then just be with him. Christnms Weekday

1ln4:7-lO Mk6:34-44 Wednesday JANUARY 9 Christmas Weekday

I'm having an argument with a fundamentalist friencl who insists the Epiphany happened exactly as it says in the Bible. I keep saying there's no way it could have. Who is right? atholics believe that each book of the Bible needs to be appreciated according to the principles of its own literary genre" We don't look to the Gospels for modern critical history or unbiased biographical/reportorial

fact-te11ing.

Mk 5:45-52

The four Gospels were written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Each Gospel writer uses human skill to craft a true story, presenting the saving mystery of our Lord's life, death, and resurrection so that readers may come to know Christ, share his life, and be saved. Every story in the Gospels is shaped to communicate saving truth, but not every story is told as a direct "iust the facts, ma'am" report of sequential events. So there's saving sense in which, yes, the Epiphany happened exactly as it says in Matthew 2:l-12. And there's a more literal sense in which, no, the Epiphany probably didn't happen exactly as it's recounted. What is most certain is the Gospel's saving message of the birth of our true King, the Light of the World, before whom we offer homage and who, when we encounter him, will change our lives and send us home in a new path. -Fr. Matthew Allman, CSsR
