Opening our Windows to Hospitality

'

As we grow older we find ourselves developing walls around our

world. The once youthful flexible social interaction and spontaneity begins to develop into routines. From sitting at home with electronics and the internet to entertain us to going to work, school or church and hanging out with the same people, the curiosity we once had for change has become more anchored in predictable repetitive social habits. We used to know all our neighbors welcoming new families as they moved into our building or into the home across the street. We become more isolated from the human eco-system closing off our world and heart to others. The word hospitality is derived from the latin word hospes which means guest or stranger. By just thinking of the word "stranger", it invokes feelings of fear, anxiety and the unknown. Rather than being like Jesus in John 4 where he engages into conversation with strangers such as the Samaritan woman by the well or in Mark 2 were Jesus has a meal with a multitude of tax collectors including the disciple Matthew, we avoid these situations and "cross the street and walk on the other side of life" avoiding others who are "not like us". God shows us his beauty and love to us by opening our "blinds" of hospitality to others through his own ways through nature. Sitting at home one day I was feeling spiritually tired and unmotivated to get out of bed. Then God told me to open the shutters and windows one morning. The fresh clean trade winds and morning sunlight came through my window energlzing me to embrace his blessings and make a

difference and have more hospitality to others.

this morning about a police officer who came upon a drug-addicted couple living on the streets where the woman appeared.pregnant and prepared to arrest them. Rather than taking them to jail, he talked to them discovering the woman was nearly full term. As she cried shaking with withdrawals, she said she wanted her baby but knew she was in shape to have and raise it. Although he already had four children of his own and living a comfortable life in the suburbs, the Holy Spirit filled his heart with compassion and hospitality. Seeing she was in no condition to have the baby and raise the child, he asked the woman if she was willing to allow him to adopt the child giving it a chance on life; she said yes. Through the officer's unconditional love for the sanctity of life and his true hospitality, there is a child in God's kingdom who has been given a chance on life. I heard a story

The world today emphasizes personal gain and hidden agendas rather then selfless love for others. ln Luke Chapter 1"4, Jesus said to his host in Verse 12, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid". He goes on to say in Verse L3, "when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed". Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous. We do not know when our opportunity for hospitality will occur, but the Lord will provide them when we least expect it.

Fifth Sunday In Ordinary Time Offering the Gospel to all!

This Week’s Mass Schedule

Date

(See artwork on front cover)

If you asked Jesus what he did while on earth, I believe he would say, “preached and healed.” Those were his missions. He had good news to share and a longing to convince his listeners of the truth of this gospel of love and freedom. He was moved because he saw them like sheep without a shepherd. The gospels are nothing other than documentation of Jesus’ efforts to preach the gospel!

Mass Intention

7am noon 7 am Noon 7 am noon 7 am

We are modern-day apostles and missionaries. Let’s take a page out of Paul’s book, and offer this gospel of hope and love to so many souls in need.

—Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

5pm Vigil Mass 7 am 9 am 11am

6 pm

Paul shared Christ’s ardor. He was entrusted with preaching to the Gentiles the truth of the Gospel, and he did all he could to convince them of his message. He says he became all things to all, to save at least some. He worked hard during the day so he could pay his own way and offer his message for free. He adapted himself to his audience—their customs and ways of thinking—so they wouldn’t take offense at him, closing their hearts to his message. How many missionaries have used this same approach? Just think of the French Jesuits Sts. Jean de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues of the Great Lakes region, St. Junípero Serra in the West, or Mother Cabrini serving European immigrants on the East Coast. They learned new languages, ate new foods, and adopted new traditions to insert themselves into these cultures and share the gospel. They took a page out of Paul’s book, becoming all things to all to save at least some.

Through prayer, we encounter Christ, present in the faces of every member of our human family, so often still walking that long road to Calvary. Through fasting, we encounter our own obstacles, those things about ourselves that prevent us from loving God and neighbor. Through almsgiving, we encounter our brothers and sisters around the world, asking what we can give up so that others might have life to the fullest.

Through CRS Rice Bowl, we hear stories from our brothers and sisters in need worldwide, and devote our Lenten prayers, fasting and gifts to change the lives of the poor. Each day of Lent, individuals are invited to use the Lenten Calendar—included with every CRS Rice Bowl—to guide their Lenten almsgiving. These daily almsgiving activities—for example, give 25 cents for every faucet found in your home—help families reflect on the realities of our brothers and sisters around the world and how they can be in solidarity during the Lenten season. How will you contribute to the culture of encounter this Lent?

FAITH FORMATION CCD Teachers:

Gigi Labrador Garrick Nagao

RCIA Grade 7 to 12

Since Faith Formation school year started, our class focused on discussing the Sunday gospel and the importance of applying it to our daily lives. We are teaching our students to be better disciples by giving back to their communities and thinking of others instead of themselves. Two Sundays ago, Mr. Garrick and I decided that we are going back to basics. Meaning we are going to teach our children the basics of Catholicism. On January 21, we discussed the 12 disciples. The children were not familiar with the 12 disciples. How can they be better disciples if they don’t know who the 12 disciples that followed Jesus? We are going to teach them the Ten Commandments, the basic prayers we pray during mass, the Rosary etc. We are so proud of our students. I, personally, have seen a change in them. We love that they participate in class. We want our children to be out there doing something good instead of just sitting in the classroom. And to be build a stronger bond, we incorporate fun activities like we had cookie decorating for Halloween and we, sometimes, eat homecooked meal in class together. Learning about God doesn’t have to be in a very serious environment but we want these kids to have the spiritual tools to take with them especially the ones who are going to be in college.

Purification and Enlightenment The third stage is the period of purification and enlightenment. It coincides with the liturgical season of Lent. During this time, the elect (catechumens) and the candidates enter into a period of intense preparation and prayer which includes the three public celebrations of the scrutinies (for catechumens) and is marked by the presentations of the Creed and the Lord's Prayer. The Rite of Election (for catechumens) and the Call to Continuing Conversion (for candidates) are celebrated at the beginning of this stage. The Rite of Election takes place at the CoCathedral of St. Theresa at 2:00 on the First Sunday of Lent, February 18, 2018. This period ends with the celebration of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. (Note: only the elect are baptized. All receive the sacrament of Confirmation and welcome at the Eucharistic table.

OHANA MASS Our next Mass for persons with disabilities and their families will be on March 11 at 11:00 a.m. They will meet after in the Reception room for Sacramental Preparation.
