30th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Loving God & One Another” Sts. Peter and Paul Church
October 29, 2017
READINGS October 29, 2017 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time (A) Ex 22:20-26; 1 Thes.1:5c-10; Mt 22:34-40 Jesus was a radical. This is expressed by the word all in today’s Gospel: all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. What does that word leave out? That’s right, nothing! Jesus gave it all, and he asks for it all. That is radical. Jesus is the first one to give us the example of this total and self-giving surrender to God the Father. When prayer was more import- ant than sleep, he prayed. When he had to go without food, like in the desert, he did. When he knew that God wanted him to stay in town, he did. And when it was time to move on, he did as well. When he knew God wanted him to preach a word of com- passion or condemnation, he did, regardless of whether the person was a beggar, Peter, Pilate, or Herod. He gave all his heart, mind, and soul to God. And what about loving his neighbor as himself? He loved not only his perfect immaculate Mother, but he also loved his imperfect fellow human beings: his apostles, disciples, and fellow Jews whose faith and understanding were slow. He loved Judas and chased down discouraged apostles heading to Emmaus. He loved his enemies just as much. Tax collectors, publicans, Roman soldiers, Samaritans all received words and acts of love. The poor also had a special place in his heart, as was evident by his many miracles of soul and body for them. His love even went beyond those people he encountered in his life and reached everyone for all times. He established the sacraments and his Church to accompany on their earthly pilgrimage all those who would follow him throughout history. He descended into hell to save those who had gone before him and opened heaven. —Fr. Mark Haydu, LC
First Reading – Exodus 22: 20-26 Moses wants God to be his guide through the wilderness and to give him exact orders. Moses received no such orders. God promises only God’s presence. Even in this story where God is palpably present, God is hidden. This story speaks a truth that God is merciful and gracious, but God is not knowable. Second Reading – 1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10 These Thessalonian Christians experienced joy despite their troubles. It was appropriate for these Christians to look forward to Christ’s Second Coming because Paul had assured them that Christ would deliver them from the wrath to come. They would not suffer the judgment that the wicked would experience at the end of time. Gospel Reading – Matthew 22:34-40 Jesus is speaking of a self-sacrificing love. Jesus is asking us to turn to others in their need and to give away something of ourselves without thinking of what we will receive in return. Jesus does not separate the love of God from the love of our neighbor. Next Sunday’s Readings (Cycle A) 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Malachi 1:14b-2:2b, 8-10 (151A) Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13 Gospel: Matthew 23:1-12

CATHOLIC CARE PROJECT and FOOD BANK SENIOR BOX DISTRIBUTION
STEWARDSHIP: THE VALUE OF A VOLUNTEER We have always known that the many parishioners who volunteer to serve in our various parish ministries, organizations and events are most valuable.
But do you know how valuable? Based on the average hourly wage given by the National Independent Sector, it is currently estimated that one hour of volunteer time is worth $23.65. However, to us your volunteer time is invaluable. Through the gifts of time and talent that our parishioners so generously share, we are able to not only function better as a parish and keep our overhead costs down, but are truly the hands and feet of Jesus Christ here in Honolulu, as we serve our community in need. Mahalo Nui to all those faithful and generous stewards who volunteer in our parish! Your time is worth everything to us! Please see our brochure at the back of the church for more information on how you can help.
We are grateful for the many volunteers who gave their time and talents to help with the hospitality and distribution of the Hawaii Food Bank Senior Food boxes last Friday, October 20 and our Catholic Care Project which involved sorting and delivering bags filled with groceries for our Kupuna, parishioners and the vulnerable in need of food in our community. Over 25 volunteers, including the Knights of Columbus helped with these two projects. This month 50 grocery bags were packed from the 1400 pounds of non-perishable foods contributed by our parishioners. So that we are able to fulfill the required monthly number of bags, we are purchasing more non-perishable items from monetary donations received from individual donors. Please call the Church office if you would like to volunteer to deliver the grocery bags to our kupuna who are homebound and cannot come to our church to pick up the bags or are interested in our next Catholic Care Project. Our church office number is (808) 941-0765.

FAITH FORMATION RCIA is Pastoral
HOW TO TEACH THE LORD’S PRAYER TO CHILDREN & YOUTH
The Lord’s Prayer is the kind of prayer that children can learn at a young age. Here are some suggestions on teaching our children the Lord’s Prayer in a meaningful way that goes beyond simple recitation.
Our Father who art in heaven. Jesus begins the Lord’s Prayer by letting us know that we are all in this together. God, the Father, is the father of all people. By telling us that our one true Father is in heaven, Jesus is reminding us we are all sons and Daughter of God, and that our lives go on forever.
Hallowed be they name. Jesus calls God’s name hallowed. The word “hallowed” comes from the word “holy” which comes from the word “whole”. Jesus wants us to see God always together as a whole being.
To be continued next week….
The pastoral components of RCIA are the people who participate, some intimately and tohers from a distance, in Jesus’ work of conversion and discipleship. The pastoral work of the catechumenal process is accomplished through the love and labor of many people including the clergy, catechists, hospitality people, sponsors, small-group leaders, prayer intercessors, and parish members: “Christian initiation during the catechumenate is not the concern of catechists or priests alone, but of the whole community of believers and especially the godparents, so that from the outset the catechumens will have a sense of being part of the people of God (AG 14)” This pastoral work is a people-to-person endeavor – all the people serving this one person for the Lord. Every parishioner by their effort to include the catechumen in the community is a part of RCIA. Next week: The stages of RCIA.
YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY Eph. 2:19-22 So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
ʻAnoʻai Kākou, This reading from Ephesians gives us a lot to think about. Where are we in life? Where do we belong? Do we stand together, or do we feel alone? This is how we share our faith. This was the subject for last Friday the 27th, at our Bible study. Please join us for the next one (join the email distro or subscribe to the facebook page for the latest updates). On Sunday, we had a beach cleanup at Magic Island, after the morning mass. All who showed up are appreciated. For those looking for ongoing ways to serve, native English speakers are needed for students trying to learn English, or for those who know basic science/math, assistants are desired to aid students trying to get their GED.
We will join with our counterparts at Mary, Star of the Sea for faith sharing, starting Nov. 5th. Stay tuned for more... Check out our Facebook page (use this link): www.facebook.com/YoungAdultsMinistry.Honolulu

our great High priest, Hear our ' ': ":'' humble prayers on behalf of your priesl Father Khanh. Give him a deep faith, a bright and firnt hope and a burning love that will ever increase in the course of his priestly life. In his loneliness, comfort him ln his sorrows, strengthen him In his frustrations, point outto him that it is through suffering that the soul is purified, and show him that he is needed by the Church, he is needed by souls, he is needed for the work of redemption. O loving Mother Mary, Mother of priests, take to your heart your son who is close to you because of his priestly ordination, and because of the power which he has received to carry on the work of Christ in a world which needs him so much. Be his comfort, be his joy, be his strength, and especially help him to live and to defend the icleals of consecrated celibacy. Amen. O Jesus,

Lk 14:t-6 Saturclay November 4 St. Charles Borromeo,
rom the early days of the Church, there has been a tradition of remembering those who have died. In the fourth century, Bishop Cyril of eucharistic prayer, ierusalem noted in his catechetical instructions how, in the we remember those who have died in two different ways. First, we remember those special ones who have fallen asleep, the fathers and mothers of our faith, the prophets, the apostles, and the martyrs. And we ask that God enable us to share in their inheritance, thanks to their prayers and intercessions for us' This is still the case. At every Mass, we remind God that we relY on MarY and the saints to intercede for us. But also at every Eucharist, since the early days of the Church, when we pray for those who have died, we are reminded that love lasts more than a lifetime. it reaches out across time and space, and even across the divide of death. When we have loved, we yearn for the beloved to live on, not fust in memory but in a place that is beyond suffering and tears. And we yearn to see that loved one again. This is one of the most telling reasons whywe pray for the dead. It tells us something about ourselves as men and women made in the image of God, God's children who wish what God wishes: that no one be lost, that all be redeemed.
