Pentecost Sunday The Patience of Mary
Sts. Peter and Paul Church
May 20, 2018
Acts 2:1–11,! Cor 12:3b–7, 12–13 or Gal 5:16–25 John 20:19–23 or John 15:26–27; 16:12–15 The image of Mary—surrounded by the apostles in the upper room, awaiting the Holy Spirit— has a name: Regina Apostolorum, Queen of the Apostles. She is enthroned as Queen Mother because, when her Son the King was enthroned and lifted up, he told her, “Behold your son.” With those words he entrusted Mary to the care of John, the apostles, and the whole Church. As any good queen and mother, she defends her own. She is also called the Spouse of the Spirit, because it was in union with the Spirit that she engendered the Son. She also engenders him in the apostles and in our souls through her powerful intercession and waiting on the Spirit. One of Mary’s best qualities is waiting patiently until God’s power arrives. After the annunciation she waited nine months with Jesus in her womb. Then she waited some thirty years while Jesus grew and prepared for his mission. She waited during his public life and watched as his fame spread, but also as his enemies plotted. She waited at the foot of the cross and endured that unending Holy Saturday until the resurrection. And she waited patiently on the first Pentecost Sunday for the coming of the gift of the Holy Spirit promised by her Son. She knew he would come through, as he always did. We get impatient with God and want him to respond on our timetables according to our expectations. He waits to give us a chance to adapt our hearts to his plan and timing. He waits until the time is just right.
Reading I - Acts 2:1-11 The disciples were afraid to show their faces in public after Jesus’ crucifixion. They huddled in upper rooms with great uncertainty about what to do. But the Spirit of God helped them overcome their confusions and fears by opening up a new chapter in their lives. They were given a new message, a new calling, and a new lease on life. Reading II - 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 The work of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life is essentially the work of God. Father, Son, and Spirit are one. The courage God gave Jesus is available to us because the same God, the one true God, works in all people of faith. Gospel - John 20:19-23 The disciples’ uncertainty left them essentially powerless to undertake the mission Christ had given them. But there was a solution. The gift of the Holy Spirit gave them both the assurance and the confidence to go out into the world to spread the gospel to all they encountered. Biblical history reveals that they were faithful in fulfilling their calling.

After an 11.5 hour flight from Los Angeles, we arrived in Lourdes on 5/2 at around 1130 AM. The first day was settling in with team meetings following dinner. The spiritual journey started the following morning. The teams of amazing leaders, Knights, Dames, and volunteers helped all the malades seated in their assigned voitures/carts. Prior to the departure to the Immaculate Conception Basilica, one of the chaplains blessed the pilgrims with a prayer. Then, grace began to unfold with the blessing and presentation of rosaries to the malades and caregivers, followed by washing of the feet of the malades, and ended with reconciliation. Following lunch and a brief break, what was planned would be the highlight of this journey - the Baths. The group arrived at the Domaine, crossed the first bridge and followed the trail along the a River Gave. Before entering the line awaiting for the Baths, each malade received an individual blessing. Though it was rainy and windy, I felt warmth radiate from within. The initial freezing sensation as we took a deep dip in the water quickly dissipated with the tender love of our blessed mother as we prayed to her. Teresa did very well. I asked how she felt, she said she loved it and that she was thinking of Mary during the Baths. Following the Baths, we headed to the Rosary Basilica for the TriAssociation Mass. Teresa was super excited in anticipation of receiving a Holy Communion. Thank you for all your prayers at home. We can’t wait to soak in more graces and blessings as the days go by... God’ blessing on all of you, Shaujwo and Teresa

FAITH FORMATION Young Adults
Aloha Parents! Mahalo, for entrusting your children to us to learn and be nurtured spiritually in our faith formation ministry. In preparation for the their upcoming Scrament of Confirmation, children were given opportunities to reflect on what Confirmation means to them. Some shared how they accomplished their service project as one of their preparation before receiving their confirmation. Children discussed how the fruits of the Holy Spirit enhanced their spiritual life more fully when serving others. They reflected that doing something helpful for their community and neighbors made them feel so good that they decided to continue to render service even the project is over.
1 Cor. 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body -- Jews or Greeks, slaves or free -- and all were made to drink of one Spirit. ʻAnoʻai Kākou, We always say we believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church, but what does "one" really mean? Obviously God doesn't care about our race or anything else that might determine our status to others or in society, so we're all born on the same level below God, but that just puts us all in one place... so what does it mean to actually be united into one body? We feel one with the Church when we go to mass (especially this week with Pentecost Sunday). However, if we define ourselves by our thoughts and actions, then our sense of unity isn't what brings us to mass, it's what we carry out with us. In other words, it's how we represent the Church as we live our daily lives. Speaking of what we do day-to-day:

There are many gifts given by the Spirit, but I don't understand "speaking in tongues." What is the significance of this gift? prayer Vou are probably speaking from the experience of a "charismatic"state and I service, in which an individual suddenly enters into an ecstatic begins speaking what sounds to others like gibberish. Sacred Scriptures offer us some examples of this phenomenon. On the day of Pentecost, for example, the apostles were overtaken by the Holy Spirit and were understood by people of many nations, each in his or her own tongue (Acts 2:5-4,6). The phenomenon occurred again when the first Gentiies were converted to the faith: Peter heard them "speaking in tongues and extolling God" (i (Acts 10:46). Paul, too, saw the ecstatic condition of the people he conflrmed

(Acts 19:6). () Saint Paui reminds us that speaking in tongues is one of many gifts the Spirit may bestow upon a person (1 Corinthians $ 12:10, 28, 30), but that, above all of them, there is love (1 Corinthians 13:8). He tells us that, like the gifts of prophecy and knoWledge, so also will the gift of speaking in tongues come to an end. Love will prevail. We must remember Paul's words as we contemplate all the gifts of the Spirit: "So, my friends, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues; but all things should be done decently and in order" (1 Corinthians 14:39-40).
