Peter was imprisoned three or four times- Finally, in Rome, he was sentenced to death by crucifixion. Out of ,espect for his Master, Jesus, he asked the guard to fasten him to the cross upside down. He was buried in an old Rornan cemetery, probably where the basilica of st. peter is today. He is called the "Prince of the Aposfies." Two retters in the Bibre are said to be his.

ln this letter, paul is writing to his friend and

prot6g6,

Timothy, whire imprisoned in Rome. He is not sure he wiil win his case and this causes him to reflect on his life... paul uses athletic terms to speak of his life and death. Like a good athlete, Paul ',fought the good fight and finished the race,,. Satisfied that he has played the ,,game of good discipleship,, well, Paul feels confidence that the eternJl rest awaits him and all those who are faithful to their covenant with Christ. Paul's epitaph might read: ,,paul, faithful servant of the Lord

Gospel -

Matthew tG : L3-lg

This gospel is frequentry cailed peter's confession of faith, the

true identity of Jesus. When asked the question concerning: "Who do you say that I am?,, peter answers: ,you

are the

Messiah, the Son of the Living God,,. ln answering thus, peter

is reminded that his response was sheer grace or divinely prompted. ln response to pete/s confession, Jesus confers on him a new title ,,Rock,, on which Jesus will build His church. And the ,,gates of the netherworld,, (i.e. the arena of sin, evil and death) will not prevail or destroy the new community Jesus is founding to cofltinue his work. Jesus also gives to Peter a special teaching role dnd authority: "whatever you bind on earth will be held bound and

whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.,, This means in the context of today,s celebration, the central importance of peter,s ability to proclaim the true ia"Jry oi Jesus stands out as the key element of the passage. peter is the one who names Jesus the Messiah, and is thus named by him "the rock" on which he will build his Church.

Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul Veneration of the two great apostles, Peter and Paul, has its roots in the very foundations of the Church. They are the solid rock on which the Church is bullt. They are at the origin of her faith and will forever remain her protectors and her guides. To them Rome owes her true greatness, for it was under God's providential guidance that they were led to make the capital of the Empire, sanctified by their martyrdom, the center of the /Christian world whence should radiate the preaching of the Gospel.

martyrdom under Nero, in A.D. 56 or 67. He was buried on the hill of the Vatican where recent excavations have revealed his tomb on the very site of the basilica of St. Peter. At. Paul was beheaded in the Via Ostia on the spot where now stands the basilica bearing his name. Down the centuries Christian people in their thousands have gone on pilgrimage to the tombs of these Apostles. In the second and third centuries the Roman Church already stood pre-eminent by reason of her apostolicily, the infallible truth of her teaching and her two great figures, Saints peter and Paul. St. Peter suffered

God,

that we may be sustained

by the intercession of the

blessed Apostles Peter and Paul,

that, as through them You gave Your ehurch the foundations of her heavenly office, so through them you may help her to eternal salvation. Through our Lord fesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the

unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen
