EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD (B) Victory

Sts. Peter and Paul Church

April 1, 2018

Acts 10:34a, 37 – 43 Colossians 3:1 – 4 or 1Corinthians 5:6b – 8 John 20:1 – 9 or Mark 16:1 – 7 Domenico Cresti’s triumphal painting, The Resurrection, was placed by Fr. Lorenzo Ricci, SJ, in the chapel commemorating the spot outside Rome where Ignatius had a vision confirming his desire to ask the pope to found the Jesuit order. It’s significant because Fr. Lorenzo enthroned this painting as a symbolic act just before the order was suppressed throughout the Portuguese and Spanish Empires. It was one of their darkest hours. We all have dark moments in our histories. It seems death will swallow us; that God has abandoned us, and there is no solution. The darkness in the painting suggests just that—the world of darkness and despair without the light of Christ. The soldiers sleep, the cold world waits below, and a once-strong trunk is dry and sapped of vigor. Above, the beautiful Christ figure is surrounded in light, while he hoists the victory standard: the blood-red cross of martyrdom set upon the pure white of resurrection. He, like a new Moses, is leading them into the promised land of eternal life. These contrasting scenes of darkness and light are the message of the painting and of the resurrection itself. Peter, John, and Mary Magdalene had locked themselves at home, engulfed in darkness, fear, and sadness. The next morning they arrive to the tomb only to find it open and the body of their beloved Savior gone. Victory was being won even as they slept. Entrust your ways to the Lord and he will act. God is at work winning your salvation! Do not let hope be vanquished! Hold on. Trust in him. Victory is right around the corner.

First Reading: Acts 1:34a, 37 – 43 Jesus’ resurrection from the dead is the first act of God’s work of making all things new. That means that everything is changing and we need to testify to others about the new life God offers us all.

Second Reading: Colossians 3:1 – 4 Paul articulates a central part of his overall argument. For those in the community of faith, the starting and ending point of existence is Christ. Christ brings both life and death. We have died with Christ. We now live in and with Christ. This is the basis for the meaning of life.

Gospel Reading: Mark 16:1 – 7 Having women witnesses is unusual because Jewish law did not accept women as witnesses. But if these reports were fabricated, we can be certain that they would not have women. Therefore women witnesses constitute evidence that the story is true.

Half of Hawaii’s household do not earn enough to cover basic needs. Through this ministry our parish serves the needs of our Kupuna, Ohana and those who come to our door, who are struggling with food insecurity. Our Parish Catholic Care Project relies heavily on donations from our parishioners. Only by your generosity are we able to help others in their time of need. Please prayerfully consider helping us feed the hungry! If you don’t have /me to shop… Visit our parish website at www.sspeterpaulhawaii.org Your donation to our Catholic Care Project will help to purchase the items to fill the brown bags. Do you know someone in our parish who would benefit from receiving a food bag to help them make ends meet? Please tell them to contact our Catholic Care 3

We prayed, fasted and gave alms—and now we celebrate Easter joy! Our Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl ends as we encounter our Risen Lord. We re)lect on our brothers and sisters we have walked with, and we commit to bringing Easter joy to each person we meet in our daily lives. Don’t forget to turn in your CRS Rice Bowl in the box in the courtyard by April 8th. If you are able, please count the money in your CRS Rice Bowl and write a check for the amount made out to Sts. Peter & Paul Church. Be sure to write “CRS Rice Bowl” on the memo line of the check and drop it in the offering. Or place your box in in the Operation Rice Bowl box in the courtyard. God of the journey, You offered us the example of the Good Samaritan, who stops to heed the cries of a person in need. As we end our Lenten journey, may we continue to walk with our brothers and sisters around the world who are hungry, with those who must flee their homes because of war or lack of opportunity, and with all who need our comfort and compassion.

We pray that these, our Lenten sacrifices, may be an offering of solidarity and a promise of ongoing encounter with our one human family. As good stewards of your many gifts, may we always remember to love our neighbors as ourselves. And wherever we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty or welcome the stranger, may we remember that we are encountering the Risen Christ. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Youth & Young Adults Acts. 4:9-11 if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a cripple, by what means this man has been healed, be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by him this man is standing before you well. This is the stone which was rejected by you builders, but which has become the head of the corner. ʻAnoʻaiKākou, Happy Easter! Do you ever think about what we can do to have a good morning, or to make an entire day happy overall? Usually we do that just for something special, like our picnic for Easter, but why not do little things on many days? Peter's statement reminds us that we're all builders. It also defines what we're supposed to be around the cornerstone: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church. If we're united (one), under Christ (holy), reaching out to everyone universal (catholic), through the apostolic tradition (Jesus to Peter, all the way to Pope Francis)... then we have a lot of work to do. But where do we find the time? Simple - just join the young adults group, St. Don's (or if you're already past your mid-thirties, you can sign up your kids, and come with them if they let you)! You can subscribe to the facebook page or just send us an e-mail. We have plenty of activities on different days and times, so everyone has an opportunity to participate at some point. Thank you to everyone that contributed to Project Period. St. Don’s young adult ministry, being mostly young women, totally understands the difficulties associated with periods. All women have the right to live their life with dignity regardless of rich or poor, and so to help, during Lent we collected supplies for the emergency shelters serving our area. We were surprised at how much, how quickly everyone donated. Mahalo for the church's support! Of course, we have a lot of randomly occurring events: one-off volunteering (e.g. beach cleanups), guest speakers, social events, etc. However, we have a lot of regularly recurring things as well: • Tuesdays we continue to provide free tutoring to those trying to learn English or get their GED. • Thursdays we have Bible study. The passages we go over are inspired from the following day's Gospel reading (the calendar is available on usccb.org). • Every second Saturday morning of the month we help to clean the church. Check out our facebook page (use the link: www.facebook.com/YoungAdultsMinistry.Honolulu As the young adults ministry of Sts. Peter & Paul, inspired by St. Don Bosco, we wish to volunteer, learn, reflect, and be happy. Servite Domine in laetitia (Serve God cheerfully). Being part of this group, in this phase of our journey in life, will allow us to help each other to grow spiritually, intellectually and physically. If you have any interest, questions, comments, ideas, etc. please e-mail us at trivialFyr@gmail.com or txt 305-898-0378. Hope to see everyone soon! Aloha, Amala & Sunu

Aloha Parents! A million thanks for your continued support in our children’s faith journey and spiritual growth. During this Lent, children learn about the different Stations of the cross and how Jesus suffered for us. Children participated in the Palm Sunday Procession and had an opportunity to share their feelings and thoughts as a way to prepare themselves for the Holy Week. Through individual reflection and faith sharing with others, our children open themselves up for a deeper conversion. They learn to understand each other's reflection and share their own thoughts as they grow with deeper understanding and become closer to God. We encourage parents to continue their support of their children in their faith formation journey and in their preparation for the sacraments they are to receive. Mahalo and God Bless! constant is found in all the accounts: Those who sar,r, the risen Lord had sr"rch a powerful experience that they couldn't keep it to themselves. They had to run and teIl somebody. Think of this as a Christiar-r "big bang theory." Iesus' followers irad such a tremendous initial experience of the risen Lord that they could not hoid it in. They told their friencls, neighborsanyone who would iisten. Excitement spread to neighboring villages and hamlets, then to surrouncling countries and cultures. Eventually, Christianity expanded, sometimes under great persecution, throughout the world. Couid such endurance and dynamism result from only arl empty tomb? No. Only an experience of the risen iesus could bring this about. Sundaybu 1letin@Liguor i.org FrourDeolPodre: Qrrestrorrs Car/ro1ics.{s/r, O 2005 LigLrori Pirblicatiorrs
