John has been thinking fbr seventy years of rvhat Jesus had said. And now, led and gr_rided by the Holy Spirit, he is giving rhe rneaning and the inner signilicance of these rvords. It is not the 'words that he repeats. That would have just been a feat of memory. It is the essential meaning of the wor:ds with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Now the flesh of Jesus was his complete and full humanity. John insisted that we rnust never let go of the full humanity of Jesus. fn Jesus lye see God taking human life upon Himsetf, facing our human situation, struggling with our human problems, battling with our human ternptations and working out our human relationships. Suddenly life and the flesh are clad with glory because they have been touched by God. In Jewish thought, blood stands for the life. And to the Jew, the blood belonged to God. That is why a Jew to this day will never eat any meat which has not been completely drained of blood. Now we see what Jesus is saying. o'Yott tnust drink my blood you must take my life into the very center af your being - and that tife of mine is the life which belongs to God.',

READINGS

First Reading - Deuteronomy B:l-3, l4b-l6a The thought is on the meaning of hardship which Israel suffered in the wiiderness. This, too, is an example of God's providence. It was God,s means of humbling the nation. Teaching them their uffer dependence on Him, rather than on themselves. Second Reading

Corinthians 10:16-17

Just as an unbreakable bond was forged between two men if the ate each other's bread and salt, so a sacrificial meal fonned a real comrmrnion between the god and his worshipper. Jesus was comparing old traditions to the new sacrament of his body and blood.

Gospel-John 6:51-58

The new revelation of God in Jesus Christ is confirmed in the sacrament of Holy Communion. It is an offering of Christ to each of us and in partaking of the sacrament we have the promised that we, who eat this bread, will live forever.

It is this way with any great

experience in life. remains external until we take it within ourselves. This is so with Jesus. So long as Jesus remains a figure in a book, he is extemal to us. But when he enters into our hearls, he is within us, and we can fued upon the life and the strength and tlre dynarnic vitality that Christ gives to us^ Jesus said that "we must drink his blood.,, He is saying, "You must take my life inside you. Stop tltinking of me as an historicat figuye, or only a figure in a book or rsnly a subject for a theological clebate.,, That is what Jesus meant by us abiding in him and he in us. Jesus was telling us to feed aur hearts and minds and souls on his humanity. He was telling us to revitalize our lives with his life until we are filled with the life of God.

Christian disciples experience conversion-lifeshaping changes of mind and heart--and commit their very selves to the Lord. . Clrristian stewards respond in a particular way to the call to be a discipte. Stewardslrip has the power to shape and mold our understanding of our lives and the way in lr.hich lve live. Jesus' disciples and Christian stewards recognize God as the origin of life, giver of fi'eedom, and source of atl things. We are grateful for the gifts we have received and are eager to use them to show our love for God and for one another. We look to the life ancl teaching of Jesus for guidance in living as Chr:istian stewards.
