Sixth Sunday Of Easter God’s Generous Love
Sts. Peter and Paul Church
May 6, 2018
Sixth Sunday of Easter (B) Acts 10:25–26, 34–35, 44–48; 1 John 4:7–10 John 15:9–17
(see cover for picture) There is a painting by Aldo Carpi (1886-1973) showing the Virgin Mary bringing the Baby Jesus to visit the poor. She doesn’t make distinctions. Mary understood that Jesus didn’t come just for the rich and powerful but for everyone. learns this lesson when speaking to Peter Cornelius and his household. Until this time, the apostles were preaching to the Jewish people, but when Peter speaks to these Romans, the Holy Spirit comes upon them just as he had upon the Jews. They repent and believe. This for Peter was essential, because it showed that Jesus wanted to send his Spirit and teachings to everyone, not just the chosen race. God doesn’t show favoritism. The same goes for us. It’s natural to want to love our own: our family and those sharing our social status, political party, club, school, or parish. But our love has to spread to all peoples, especially those in the most moral, material, and spiritual need. God is love, and those who love show they come from God. Another element of love is that it is free, wanting nothing in return. Recently, while sitting at an outdoor café, a woman walked up and gave me a small wrapped gift. “I like to give gifts to complete strangers, just to make their day,” she said. What a beautiful gesture. We should also note that Cornelius accepted God’s love, was baptized, and began following the Way. He and his family didn’t take that free love of God for granted. They responded to it in joyful obedience. God’s generous love asks for an equally generous response.

First Reading - Acts 10: 25 – 26, 34 – 35, 44 – 48 Peter and the other apostles knew that salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not by our good works or efforts. God broke down Peter’s prejudice as the Gentiles in Cornelius’ house are saved and receive the Holy Spirit in the same manner as the Jews had on the Day of Atonement.
Second Reading - I John 4:7-10 Jesus commands mutual love, but he does not mean that we do this because the friends we love, love us. We love others because God first loved us.
Gospel Reading - John 15:9-17 Love is to be seen above all in the love of the Father as shown forth in the love of the Son. Our thoughts are intentionally directed back to the announcement of the depth of God’s love for the world as evidenced in the giving of the Son.

Support the Child Welfare Provider Inclusion Act: Contact your Representative and Senators today (see USCCB for more information) The Child Welfare Provider Inclusion Act (CWPIA) protects the religious liberties of child welfare service providers, including adoption and foster care agencies. The Act would prohibit the federal government and any state that receives certain federal funding from discriminating against child welfare service providers on the basis that they decline to provide a child welfare service that conflicts with their sincerely held religious beliefs or moral convictions. The Inclusion Act is needed because child welfare service providers are being discriminated against because of their sincerely held religious beliefs and moral convictions. For example, certain religiously-affiliated charities in Massachusetts, Illinois, California, Hawaii, and the District of Columbia have had to stop adoption and foster care services because of requirements imposed upon them to place children in households headed by two persons of the same sex. Also, women and men who want to place their children for adoption should be free to choose from a diversity of adoption agencies, including those that share the parents' religious beliefs and moral convictions. The Inclusion Act recognizes and respects this parental choice. The Inclusion Act has been introduced in both the House (H.R. 1881) and the Senate (S. 811).

FAITH FORMATION Young Adults
RCIA: EVER ANCIENCT, EVER NEW
ʻAnoʻai Kākou, It's tough to oppose society. However much suffering the world faces, the causes of the suffering are often ignored by the many. Instead of compassion that could slowly change the world, society tends to ignore it and seek instant gratification instead. We may not be able to control the sorrows we must face, nor how we pass on in the end, but we can choose how we live (and of course how we reach out to others as well). The hope that we can better ourselves and the world is what drives the young adults in St. Don's... and so we continue with our variety of activities and times: * Tuesdays ESL (English as a Second Language): Practice English conversation Tuesdays 5-6 pm * Thursdays Bible Study: Young adults Bible study Thursdays 5-6 pm * Second Saturday Morning Church Cleaning: Once a month, just for a couple of hours, we help clean the church from 8.30 am We also do other things as well - please contact me if you're interested in joining efforts on serving:
Of course, there are also plenty of one-off projects, partnering community organizations, and social/spiritual activities with our fellow parishes, so please sign up (email/facebook) for notifications, and join whenever you can. Our parish has adopted a year round program which is broken down into two 16-week cycles of basic topics such as God, the Church, the story of the people of God. Although each cycle is the same the topics are broad enough to give us opportunity to explore different facets of the treasures Mother Church has provided for us through the centuries. You are free to join at any point during the cycle. In February we begin more in depth study for those preparing for the Sacraments. Please see below to contact us. We look forward to our faith journey together and pray for you as you continue to explore and to find your way home. Sincerely, Rosemary Hashimoto, Cheryl Parenio & Albert Hayashi

Knights of Columbus Council 16002Sts Peter and Paul Awarded Council of the Year – 2018
CROWNING OF MARY Mother’s Day SUNDAY May 13, 2018 8:45 AM – inside the Church
Among 33 councils in Hawaii, our council exceeded all of our assignments by 1,200%. We donated over $80,000 to charity, our 110 members did over 27,000 volunteer hours and we visited 880 sick at hospitals or their residences. We also broke the Knights of Columbus state record on blood donations and distributed over 80,000 pounds of food to hungry. Together we support the Pro-Life movement, donate wheelchairs to hundreds of people and promote our faith.
We ask our parishioners and guests kokua and exercise reasonable caution and care when entering and/or exiting church grounds. We remind you that the fine for the violation of jaywalking is $130. The church also asks our driving parishioners and guests to exercise caution and good judgment in entering and exiting the church's parking lots in relation to on-coming traffic and/or pedestrians. Thank you for your continued understanding and cooperation in these important matters.
If you are a Catholic man, over 18 years old, please join us and help us to do even more next year. Just 6 hours of your time for the whole year is what we ask. Become a Knight today! God Bless, Brother Cicero

Ascerrsiol of tlrc Lord SEVENTH SUNDAY READINGS:
raise an important issue about intentional involvement in I. wrongdoing, and my response extends to many other life situations. A person may work in a hospital that performs abortions, provided that he or she is not involved with the procedures. Because performing abortions is only one part of what the hospital does, a person may work there contributing his or her expertise to other areas ofhealth care. If the circumstances were different, and the place of employment was dedicated to terminating pregnancies through abortion, it would be wrong to work there. My response is guided by the principle of ---Ix. * cooperation. It asserts that we may never intentionally cooperate approvingly in the morally wrong action of another person. To help another and approve of his immoral action is termed formal cooperation. Cooperating with another reluctantly, disapproving of what he is doing, is called material cooperation A person may never cooperate formally in another's wrongdoing because, in doing so, he or she also knowingly performs an immoral action. Some material cooperation may be morally iustified, but not if a person's cooperation is necessary for an immoral action to occur. The Church advises Catholics to avoid any level of moral cooperation. While many don't have the luxury to consider employment elsewhere, other considerations include: Is the individual creating scandal by employment at this hospital? Has the individual made his or her moral understanding known to this hospital?
