How could the theme for
today's
Readings be anything other than the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ? During the final week of Lent, we celebrate the very highs and lows of
Jesus' earthly life; and there are several themes, but all of them might be summed up in one word, LOVE.
"For God so /oyed the world that He gave His only Son that we might have life." (John 3:16) We must remember that Jesus did not come into this world just to be crucified; rather, He came to show us how much He and the Father love us, even enough to die for us. This is clearly shown in all of His teachings and actions.
READINGS
First Reading - Matthew 2\:1.-11. The royai entry of Jesus into Jerusalem was his acceptance of the people's accl.amation of him as Son of David. The cleansing of the temple and the messianic signs all point to this. Israel must receive or reject her king. Jesus, however, did not present himself as a worldly, political king. He entered the city on a lowly beast of burden.
The First Reading is from the Book of the Prophet lsaiah $A:4-TA). We hear from the Prophet who, like
Second Reading
Jesus, was persecuted because the people of lsrael did not like what he said. Here he is explaining how he forged ahead even under severe persecution. You
Jesus entered Jerusalem in great humility, not counting equality with God as "a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant." He humbled himself and became obedient even to death on a cross. Therefore Cod exalted him, so that every tongue might corifess that he is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
might consider lsaiah as being an early version of Jesus who was thought by His own people to be a prophet and yet, they killed Him as they did all the prophets.
The Second Reading, from St. Paul's Letter to the Phllippians (2:&11, is a poetic summary of the role of Jesus Christ who sets aside His being the Son of God coming to earth and living and dying out of love for His Father and for all mankind, and the honor bestowed on Him for it.
The Gospel Reading is a three-part reading from the Gospel af Matthew (26:14- 6'6J. ln it, we hear the familiar story of the Last Supper, the betrayal by Judas, the arrest and suffering of Jesus, and finally the crucifixion. Not until Easter Sunday do we hear of the third part of this great event. So listen carefully! Place yourself in the crowd scene. Are you one who is yelling, "Crucify Him" or, are you one who is quietly standing by silently saying, "Oh God, be merciful to me, a sinner?"
Thus begins the most solemn week of our liturgical year. Lent will be over soon and the great joy of Easter will be here. Will you be able to look back and say that your Lenten observance or resolution was successful, and that you can truly partake of the Joy of Easter? lt's not too late. Begin now! Something to think about during your Prayer Time this week!

\Me are called to build a culture of encounter. Jesus made that clear from the way he lived, the message he preached, Pope Francis makes that clear by his own daily example. Ancl we have a host of holy men and women who have come before us, who have gone to the margins of society so that every member of our human family might know the Iove of God. Now, it's our turn. With the spiritual pillars of Lent at our disposal, we set out on a 4o-day journey, a journey of encounter with ourselves, our neighbors and our God. . Through prayer, we encounter Christ, present in the faces of every member of our human family, so often still walking that long road to Calvary. . Through fasting, we encounter our own obstacles, those things about ourselves that prevent us from loving God and neighbor. . Through almsgfving, wâ‚Ź encounter our brothers and sisters around the world, asking what we can give up so that others might hive life to the fullest. Lent is our time to encounter, to cultivate a spirit of global solidarity. CRS Rice Bowl is our tool, iat-holic Relief. Ss-fyice-s' Lenten faith-in-action program for families and faith communities, a vehicle through which the stories of communities around the world can be shared, an invitation through which our prayers and Lenten sacrifices can change lives.

Defrltr?fu, Why don't Catholics study and prepare for the end times or rapture? 1l !!
uite simpiy, we don't prepare for the rapture because as Catholics r,ve aon't believe in the rapture. We do beiieve that tl-rere is a time when the worid r,vill encl, but lve have no idea when that day r,vi11 come. F'undamentalist Chrislians beiieve that the world will end with a rapture where the good r,vili be taken and the evii left. It is based on a misreading of Revelation 20 that speaks of an angel in the pit who will ravage the earih for 1,000 years. This is callecl amiliennialism, and the Church has condemned tlris belief (CCC 576). Tl-ie whole "left behind" series comes from this misreading. Rather than beir-rg afraid of the end of tl-re r,vorld, the Catholic Church teaches that the best way to prepare for the coming of Cl-rrist is by living the sacramental life of the Church: being baptized, celebrating the Eucharist and reconciliatior-r consistently, being married or professing holy orciers in the Churcl:, and partaking ir-r the anointing of the sick. By doing these things we are participating in the fullness of the Churctrr ancl life rvith Cl-rrist. This is the best way to prep&re for Christ's return. While we as Catholics do believe there r,vili be a day i,vhen we r,viltr be gathered to Cl-rrist, r,ve look forward to this day with anticipaiion and ioy, not fear and anguish.

From Palms to Passion Mt zt,t-tt and Mt 26:14-27:66
f)alm Sunday is the sixth and final
I
Sunday of Lent. It is sometimes called "Passion Sunday" because it marks the beginning of Holy Week. There are two Gospel readings for Palm Sunday. The first, during the blessing of the palms, tells the story of |esus entering |erusalem in triumph. The second reading tells the story ofthe Passion and death of the Lord. Holy Week is the most sacred time of year for Catholics. It's okay if your Holy Week list of things to do includes coloring eggs, cleaning and baking for Easter, or traveling to a relative's home. There's nothing wrong with secular Easter activities. But it is important to balance the
secular with the sacred by keeping the "holy" in Holy Week. If you work or go to school, try to set aside time every day this week for quiet prayer, Scripture reading, and meditation. Ofler up any pain or dilficuities you experience and unite your sufferings with the pain of Christ. Make it a point on Good
Friday to let go of resentments and forgive those who have hurt you.
Your greatest temptation during Holy Week will be scrimping on your spiritual needs because there is so much going on. if you let that happen, your Easter celebration may look perfect on the surface, but it will feei spiritually empty.
Make Holy Week special for the whole family by turning off television, computers, and electronic games from sundown on Holy Thursday until Easter morning. Pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary together as a family. Plan to attend all of the Triduum liturgies. Volunteer as a family to help decorate your parish church on Holy Saturday for the Easter Vigil.

CONh]TCTION "This sacrifice of Christ is unique; it completes and surpasses all other sacrifices. First, it is a gift from God the Father himself, for the Father handed his Son over to sinners in order to reconcile us with himself. At the same time it is the offering of the Son of God made man,who in freedom and love offered his life to his Father through the Holy Spirit in reparation for our disobediencel' the Catholic - Catechism of Church,674
