Mark l4zL2-16,22-26 (see picture on .f ront covcr)
A beautiful painting by GiovanniBellini shows
the great care and reverence rvith rvhich
Joseph,
Nicodemus. and Mary Magdalene place the body of Christ in the tomb. Yet it is also a symbol of the delicacy and devotion rvith rvhich rue should receive Jesus, r.vho comes down to us on the altar at Mass. His Body and Blood rvere shed to create a New Covenant, a new pact of love between God and people. In the Old Testament, God ordered that the blood of sacrificed animals be sprinkled on the people as a way to seal a pact with him, thus gaining tbrgiveness of their sins. As if to say, may I be as this calf or goat if I ever fail to obey and live up to your commands. In the Nerv Covenant, God sent his orvn Son to
be the sacrificial victim to seal our covenant of love rvith the Father. Before the blood was sprinkled, rve consunle his Body and Blood in the Eucharist as Jesus commanded: Do this in memory of me. Take this, all of y<lu. and eat. Take this, all of you, and drink. If goat blood could express a covenant in the Old Testament, horv much more powerful to unite us lvith God i:; the blood of his only begotten Son! How much rrmre porverful to forgive us and communicate God's overpowering love! Jesus lays down his life sacrarnentally again in this Mass. Let us receive his Body and Bloocl rvith purity and devotion, aw&re of tlrc amazing gifl and the miracle that happens in our pre$ence. *Fr. Mark Haydu, LC
Readingl - Exodus 24t3-8 The sprinkling of the blood on the altar was to seal the agreen'rent between God and the people. The "blood of the covenant" comes from the Old Testarnent. And the book referred to here r.vas the book of law in which Moses had given them.
Reading
II - Hebrews 9:11-L5
No other book in the New Testament explicitly calls Jesus a priest, let alone a high priest. Jesus' priesthood becomes the prirnary vehicle for explaining the meaning of his death and resurrection.
Gospel - Mark 1.4=12-16,22-26
By the time the Gospel of Mark was w'ritten, the Lord's Supper worrld have been an established ritual in the early Church. It was observed as a Clrristian rather than a Jewish rite. The Church simplitied the Passover observance and tailored it to its theology and needs. The focus became Jesus ratlier than the Passover. NEXT SUNDAY'S READINC1S

Inunaculate Heart of the BlessedVirgin Mary 2
Deqn?ad/Tp, What is the Catholic belief in the Real Presence of the Eucharist? ur belief in the Real Presence goes back to Jesus himself. Saint Paul describes the Last Supper: fesus took bread and said, "This is my body." He took wine and said, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood." The Catholic Church has always believed that |esus meant exactly what he said. When confronted, ]esus did not water down his statements, although they were difficult to accept and beyond human understanding. Even Peter did not claim to understand. He simply accepted them on the authority of fesus, who had "the words of eternal life." Catholics have always believed in the Real Presence of f esus, known traditionally as transubstantiation. This means that the "substance" of the bread and wine becomes the "substance" of Christ's Body and Blood, while the appearances of bread and wine remain. When we receive Communion, we truly receive the Body and Blood, soul and divinity, of Christ, under the appearance of bread and wine (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1 373 -158 1). Not ali Christians believe in the Eucharist as Catholics do. Some deny that Christ is present at all, contending that the bread and wine only symbolize the spirit and teachings of Jesus. There are many variations, and Catholics should carefully distinguish our Church's teaching from other opinions. Bread and wine are changed by Christ into himself in a miracle of love we Catholics call, with awe and affection, the Blessed Sacrament.
