missionary religious communities when they came to Hawaii.
Historically, since the beginning of Christianity and through the centuries, our Catholic education has been known for its excellence and formation of the society. Many parents have valued education as an important gate to a good and meaningful life.
Not long ago, I had the opportunity to speak with our Senior Deacon Richard Port about our Sts. peter and paul Catholic Education Scholarship and Endowment. The Deacon spoke with deep emotion as he recalled unconditional sacrifices his mother made to send hirn and his siblings to Catholic schools. He credits his successes in life and service because of his mother's gr.eat love and conviction towards the Catholic education he received which has formed the person he is today. This Sunday, we honor Deacon Richard port and his wife, Ann, at the 2017-2018 annual Catholic Education Scholarship and
Endowment luncheon for their dedication to education at our parish and in the Diocese of Honolulu.
Our first annual fundraising luncheon for this year hopes to see its vision and mission come to fruition. lf youi wish to contribute to the Sts. Peter and paul Catholic Education Scholarship and Endowment, please do so. place your contributions in the donation envelopes provided at the entrances of the church; leave it in the offertory basket or bring it to the office.
A donation plaque is being designed and displayed in our church courtyard acknowledging our church community,s contributors who have provided their financial assistance and award to students who believe strongly in community service and are willing to uphold the Catholic values in the future. Donor's name wili be categorically etched on the plaque for future generations to remember their generous sacrifices so to accomplish God's work and serve our families at Sts. peter and Paul. Clergy and Parishioners in the Diocese of Honolulu
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Peace be with you!
September 11, 2017 marks the 25tr anniversary of the devastation of the island of Kauai by Hurricane Iniki. And as I write, we are aware of Hurricane Harvey, which already has done enormous damage to parts of Texas and Louisiana, and of Hurricane Irma, which has damaged many Caribbean islands and is threatening Florida. As we know so well, the recovery needs are many and multi-faceted, and they will require the assistance of those who live outside the affected areas.
For this reason, all parishes are encouraged to take up a second collection for Hurricane Relief on at least one weekend during the month of September. The proceeds should be sent to the Chancery Offrce in the usual manner, and they will be forwarded from the Chancery to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). The USCCB, in dialogue with the bishops of the affected areas, will distribute the funds either through Catholic Charities USA for humanitarian relief, or through the affected dioceses for help in rebuilding churches, schools, and other buildings used as infrastructure for evangelization. Your generosity to those in need at this critical moment will be richly rewarded by the Lord and much appreciated by our sisters and brothers.
Thank you for your generosity! Sincerely yours in Christ,

Good News!
READINGS
September L0,201,7 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time {A) Today's readings are about fraternal correction. We are responsible for our brother's good, and God expects us to help him. This means being a good example and holding him or her to a gospel standard. If that means a hard dose of the truth, so be it, as long as that truth is given in love. Ezekiel was a prophet who knew how to preach re and brimstone, but he could also be tender and compassionate. He prophesied bnth about the destruction of Israei and how Yahweh would turn their hearts of stone intn flesh. ln Michelangelo's fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, the strength of this rugged prophet is evident. That Ezekiel is turned to listen to a cherub says a lot about his hurnility as well.
God told Ezekiel that if he didn't preach to the wicked, God rq/ould hold him responsible for their deaths. However, if he did preach and the wicked still didn't heed him, Ezekiel would be safe. The rnoral is, when God asks us to preach, take it seriously!
if our brother sins against us, we should confront him in the presence of two witnesses. He even encourages us to bring the Church in as judge if a dispute between believers
Jesus tells us
isn't resolved. However, this should always be done with love.
First Reading - Ezekiel 33:7-9
It is obvious
that Cod's knowing of Jeremiah is more than cognitive. It is rather an activity of relationship. Jeremiah stresses the diffieulty in fulfilting the cross that he must bear in his Iife. But he finally acknowledges that God breaks through his rdsistance and he fulfllls his calling.
Second Reading
-
Rornans 13:8-1O
As the apostle to the Centiles, Paul is conscious of his responsibility to the Romans. He wants to strengthen their I'aith. He appeals for their dedication
to God and for the responsibilities of each of them for the service of ali. He begins with the ethical instruction and exh<irtation of the law of love.
Gospel Reading
-
Mattherry 18 : 15-2O
Jesus one again confronts the people with the challenges of Christiaa life. He stresses that each one of them must deny thernselves and take up their cross. If we are to follow Christ, each one of us rnust take up our own cross in order to fuffill our own destiny.
As humble Christians, we should accept corrections when they are done correctly. No one likes to be
told he or she is wrong, but if we are we should rejoice in the truth, even if it hurts. And we should thank those who love us enough to correct us. O ?{}17 l.iguori Publit'ations. Stewardship begins with Discipleship Stewardship
is a
A Steward acknowledges their many God-given gifts and in gratitude, responds to the Gispel invitation to nurture and share those gifts with others.
Each day, Sts Peter and paul parish is buzzing
with activity. There are groups that pra| together, groups that minister to other parishioners, and groups that reach out to the communit5l. Part of being an active member of our parish is to find a place for yourself _ a ministry where your personal talents can best be put to use. Reflect on your skills and
interests. Prayerfully consider how much time
you can commit to helping and make a connection to that ministry or project.
This will nurture your conversion journey, allowing you to grow closer to God and
experience a deeper relationship with Him.

The parish provides oppartunities in faith formation for young children, youth and young adults through sacramental preparation, Eible study, worship, prayer and seruice.
We recognize the importance of famity

Together we will develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of aur faith.
Youth Ministry Update The recently Confirmed youth have been continuously meeting twice a month to build and share their faith with each other. They have also been caretully planning their first service project together, preparing gifts for children who are ill. The monetary donation that was cotlected at their Confirmation Mass will be used to purchase gifts that they decided to donate to children staying at Kapiolani Medical Center. Some of the gifts include totes, prayer cards, games, and arts & cratts for all ages. The youth ministry hope that these donations will bring smiles to the brave young patients in the hoipital. YOUNG ADULT
MINISTRY
Luke 4:24,28-30 And he said,."Tniy, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his own country... When they heard this, all in the synagogue were fitted with wrath. And they rose up and put him out of tie city, and ted him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw him down headtong. But passing througlt the midst of them he went away.
'Ano'ai K5kou,
Do you ever think about what drives people? What causes people to choose where they want to go, or who they want to take along? Sornetimes it's whatever sense of obligation that they're raised with... or the problems faced dayto-day... or often people don't think about it at all - all the stress from work and life outside is just too tiring... But if we always look for God in both word and spirit, then we can continue to grow in our faith, driven by God. Unfortunately, many people forget, and so our communitylalls apart. So please pray for our community, both for ourselves and the larger community in which we live, and send us your thoughts to inspire us all as we continually seek to integrate and help everyone. Dean?nd/Te, I want my children to be merciful and forgiving like fesus, but I don't want them to be permissive of sin because someone else thinks it's OK. How can I teach this balance?
afh. Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, "Education in the faith by I parents should begin in the child's earliest years. This already happens when family members help one another to grow in faith by the witness of a Christian life in keeping with the .j Gospel" (CCC2226). The balance of advocating the magnitude of God's mercy without diminishing the severity ofsin is best taught through witness. You should hold your children accountable (and vice versa) and explain with loving candor how lax attitudes and actions have consequences. As we are taught in Proverbs 27:5, "Better is an open rebuke than a love that remains hidden." An intimate relationship with God also helps. It's easier to instill greater compassion in ourselves and in others when we've experienced God's inflnite mercy flrsthand. Jesus asked the woman caught in adultery, "'Has no one condemned you?' She replied, 'No one, sir.'Then |esus said, 'Neither do I condemn you. Go, [and] from now on do not sin any more"' (fohn 8:10-11). Christ loves the sinner and despises the sin-but he doesn't dwell on the sin. Instead, |esus rejoices when sinners enter a newfound relationship with his merciful Father, knowing that the experience of God's mercy is the catalyst for ultimate change and lasting conversion, where neither the sinner is condemned nor the sin condoned.
