The Nativity of John the Baptist God’s Mission For Us Sts. Peter and Paul Church
June24, 2018
Isaiah 49:1–6; Acts 13:22–26; Luke 1:57–66, 80 (see cover art)
When an artist begins a painting, she or he has the end result in mind. The final result, the inspiration, is what sets the artist in motion. Aristotle called this ideal the “final cause” because it was the first thing in mind (the inspiration) and the last to be realized (the final product). When God gives life to a human at the moment of conception, he does so with a final mission in mind for that child. He gives life freely, but not without a plan. You and I are not the result of a coincidence or a chain of chemical reactions. We began at the heart of a loving, purposeful God. God willed you and wants you! You are who you are because of God’s infinite love. He created you as a unique and divinely designed human being. His purposeful hand reached out and lifted you into existence just the way you are. Yet your creation is not merely in the past but a reality that touches you now. God holds you and keeps you in every moment of your life. With every breath and movement, God is sustaining you. Your life is a loving project of God today. Like St. John the Baptist who was created and called to be Jesus’ cousin and prepare the way for him, so you have a call to prepare the way for Jesus to enter your world. How you do that in your lifetime as well as how you do that today is something unique to you. Your life has a mission! What is it? —Fr. Mark Haydu, LC
Reading I - Isaiah 49: 1-6 The servant song of Isaiah begins with the proclamation to the people far away. They are to witness what God has done in calling the servant. The servant has been called and named before birth, having been known even in the mother’s womb. Reading II - Acts 13: 22-26 St. Paul moves forcefully to the application of his sermons and refers to all those listening as brothers without explicit reference to the Gentiles. This may be one way of appealing to both the Jews and the Gentiles as one group, at least as far as their need for forgiveness and justification is concerned. Reading III - Luke 1: 57-66, 80 John the Baptist set the standard for service through his character, his holiness, his discipline, his boldness, his humility, and through his desire to “increase Christ” and his willingness to decrease self. The Vice-President of the US Bishops’ Conference updates the Bishops gathered for the Spring General Assembly on the recent US immigration policy of separating families at its border with Mexico and the Bishops response. US Bishops gathered in Ft Lauderdale, FL for their annual Spring General Assembly, the Conference’s Vice-President, Archbishop José Gomez updated the Bishops on a recent US immigration policy being implemented on the US border with Mexico. Families separated In March 2017 it was learned that the US government was considering the possibility of separating families arriving at its border. At one time, families were held together in a detention facility, or were released with one member of the family wearing an ankle monitor. Archbishop Gomez said that from May 3-18 “over 640 families were separated”. Agonizing scenes at the border The implementation of this new policy, has led, as we know, to agonizing scenes at the border of anguished parents and terrified children. Separation is proven to cause trauma The US Bishops stated that the policy of forcibly separating families is ineffective and “contrary to Catholic values”. “Rupturing the bond between parent and child causes scientifically proven trauma that often leads to irreparable emotional scarring”, the Archbishop said. There is a need to secure the nation’s borders, but separating families does not respond to that security concern, the Archbishop said. It also does not address the root causes of immigration in the countries of origin, namely “community or state-sanctioned violence, gang recruitment, poverty, and a lack of education opportunities for children”.

FAITH FORMATION Young Adults Luke 1:66 and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, "What then will this child be?" For the hand of the Lord was with him.
ʻAnoʻai Kākou, When people think of miraculous events surrounding a birth, naturally we first think of Jesus Christ. This week's bible study, however, is going to focus on his cousin, John the Baptist. Today John is the most common name in the country. At that time, however, it meant so much more. In a country based on individualism, we take for granted that there's no need to be named after our relatives; we are all free to pave a new path. At that time, by contrast, people were shocked and questioned, "What then will this child be?" Perhaps we too should ask the same of ourselves. Of course, reading the Bible tends to bring up a lot of questions, which is why the young adults have Bible study! So please join us Thursday, and for all our other events as time permits… * Tuesdays ESL (English as a Second Language): Practice English conversation Tuesdays 5-6 pm * Thursdays Bible Study: Young adults Bible study at church Thursdays 5-6 pm * Second Saturday Morning Church Cleaning: Once a month, just for a couple of hours, we help clean the church from 8.30 am We also do other things as well - please contact me if you're interested in joining efforts on serving: * Kakaʻako Family Shelter * Human Trafficking Victims Of course, there are also plenty of one-off projects, partnering community organizations, and social/spiritual activities with our fellow parishes, so please sign up (email/facebook) for notifications, and join whenever you can. Check out our facebook page: www.facebook.com/ YoungAdultsMinistry.Honolulu As the young adults ministry of Sts. Peter & Paul, inspired by St. Don Bosco, we wish to volunteer, learn, reflect, and be happy. Servite Domine in laetitia (Serve God cheerfully). Being part of this group, in this phase of our journey in life, will allow us to help each other to grow spiritually, intellectually and physically. If you have any interest, questions, comments, ideas, etc. please e-mail us at trivialFyr@gmail.com or txt 305-8980378. Hope to see everyone soon! Aloha, Amala & Sun
RCIA Our Year Round RCIA sessions are heating up for the summer. Participants have requested that we take an in-depth look at the Mass since much of our Catholic Life

EPIC Ministry is hosting a young adult retreat, "Upon This Rock," on June 29July 1, 2018, at the St. Anthony Retreat Center in Kalihi Valley. This retreat refocuses us on building a firm foundation of faith, featuring guest presenters, prayer and reflection, group activities, and fun and fellowship. It's a time to get away from the busyness and craziness of our young adult lives in order to let loose a little, let go, and let God! A Saturday-only option also available. esus was not baptized in the |ordan River for the same reasons we are baptized today.
Exactly why ]esus received baptism is known to him alone. Your question will be one that goes into the "everythingyou wanted to ask Jesus when you meet him in heaven" category. But scholars studying this question have reasonable assumptions about why Iesus requested baptism. When Jesus requested baptism from John, he wanted to demonstrate that he identified with his people's search for God. Scholars speculate that after years of performing the duties of home and the carpenter's trade, Jesus had become increasingly conscious of his life's mission. It was time to seize the moment and begin his ministry. John balked, thinking he should be accepting baptism from Jesus-the long-awaited one. But Iesus prevailed, and a voice from heaven ratifled his action. "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased" (N4atthew 3:17). After |esus' baptism, Iohn's mission was accomplished. |esus took center stage. Identifyingwith his people's sinfulness, Jesus allowed himself to be baptized to demonstrate his solidarity with the people, signaling the beginning of the Messianic Age that John had promised. We know the rest of the story. Later, ]esus would commission his apostles to baptize all nations. This would be a baptism of water and the Spirit, signifying that the baptized had found fesus and were living in forgiveness and freedom.
