Our Lord Jesus Christ, King Of The Universe “The Last Judgment” Sts. Peter and Paul Church
November 26, 2017
READINGS Our Lord Jesus Christ, King Of The Universe Ez 34:11–12, 15–17; 1 Cor 15:20–26, 28; Mt 25:31–46 This amazing scene that takes up the whole of the wall of the Sistine Chapel is a reminder of the dramatic moment of Christ’s Second Coming, when he will judge the living and the dead. The Father has given all authority to the Son (John 5:22). Michelangelo places in the upper register the symbols of Christ’s passion as a way to highlight the instruments of Christ’s victory and ours, as well as to show that it was through his loving sacrifice that he has earned the authority to judge the living and the dead. Christ comes riding on the clouds with his Mother at his side, head turned and eyes cast down, as the days of her intercession have come to an end. Our chance to appeal to his mercy has passed. We will stand naked before him, and our actions will be the gown that dresses us for the feast of the Lamb (Matthew 22:11). Jesus, in his mercy, wants no surprises and personally reveals the material to be covered by this final exam. Today’s passage highlights that our charity and kindness will go a long way toward him recognizing us at the last day. Scripture even goes so far as to say that this “love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). Those who know his love and spread it with their actions will be preparing themselves for a blessed judgment. Jesus makes it clear that our faith will also be a theme upon which he will search our hearts. He desires not mere words but loving listening and the heeding of his will. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). This is a great source of consolation for those who love him sincerely, even if imperfectly.
First Reading – Ezekiel 34:11-12, 15-17 The God of the prophet Ezekiel deals with the people with compassion. God is like a shepherd who risks everything to protect his flock. He goes out to find the straying lamb, and he looks for green pastures in order for them to have food. Second Reading – 1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 28 According to Paul, God is interested in all areas of our lives. Out of compassion, God sends His Son into the world to live and die for us. This compassion is the power, which equips us for life and saves us from death. Gospel Reading – Matthew 25:31-46 We read in Matthew that Jesus separated the sheep from the goats on the basis of whether they showed compassion or did not show compassion to the neediest of people. Next Sunday’s Readings (Cycle B) First Sunday Of Advent First Reading: Isaiah 63:16b–17,19b; 64:2-7 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 Gospel: Mark 13:33-37

STEWARDSHIP TIME – TALENT – TREASURE KOKUA THIS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1 It is that time of year again. We begin the new Liturgical Year on December 3rd with the First Sunday of Advent. We will need your kokua to remove the old Breaking Bread hymnals from the pews and replacing them with the brand new ones. Again there is a box of hymnals in the office if you would like your own copy. We simply ask for a donation of $5.00 to help defray the cost. Thank you for keeping them in good condition and for sharing them with one another. Mahalo to our many volunteers who help each year.
LITURGICAL MINISTERS SAVE THE DATE
We would like to extend a very special Mahalo to our volunteers and donors who helped make a tremendous impact in our fight against hunger within our parish and greater community. Our Catholic Care Project Brown Bag Program provides supplemental food bags to those who are vulnerable to food insecurity, including our own kupuna, ohana and keiki.
Through your wonderful support: Over 1,080 pounds of non-perishable foods was donated to our November Food Collection This helped us produce:
Your gift to the parish to serve in our Liturgies is so important. We need your help if you feel called to serve in this capacity. We invite you to prayerfully consider whether God is asking you to be a Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Altar Server, Hospitality Minister, Commentator, Music Minister (choir) or to help with the Art and Environment of our worship space.
• 54 bags of supplemental food were distributed to households who are vulnerable to hunger • Each bag provided an average of 20 lbs of food to support nutrition for 3 – 5 days • These Brown Bags provided a total of 216 meals at a time when they were most needed • We shared the remainder of the food left from the Hawaii Foodbank Distribution with the Institute for Human Services to support the needs of our homeless friends
All new and present ministers are asked to complete an application form, which can be found in the back of the church or in the office Plan on attending our Ministry Discernment Day.

This is the 17th year of Star Light, Star Bright which manifested in our diocese as a dream of hope that the simple act of giving would help mend damaged or strained relationships among incarcerated mothers, their children and caregivers. The program covers airfare, lodging and meals for the weekend at St. Stephen Diocesan Center. This year’s party will be Saturday, December 9th in the Women’s Community Correctional Center. The success of Star, Light, Star Bright is dependent upon donations, prayers and compassion for the families, especially the children, who struggle daily with the effects of Mom’s incarceration. THE FIRST MAJOR GATEWAY: THE RITE OF ACCEPTANCE & THE RITE OF WELCOMING
Hawaii Okinawa Center Ballroom 94-587 Ukee St. Waipahu, Hi 96797
Apart from the sacraments of initiation, this first major gateway is the most significant one for both catechumens and candidates. The Rites of Acceptance and Welcoming should be celebrated more than once during the year. They are celebrated within a special Liturgy of the Word or within a Mass. We try to celebrate during a Sunday Mass so that you, parishioners, may “be present whenever possible, taking an active part in the responses, prayers, singing and acclamations.” Imagine one end of a thick rubber band being stretched from the Easter Vigil back to when a person first begins to attend RCIA sessions. Imagine 3 nails marking the major RCIA liturgies holding this stretched rubber band in place. Ast he catechumens and candidates pass through one gateway, a nail is pulled releasing tension and drawing them into the next period ever closer to the sacraments. The power of the grace in these liturgical moments is similar to the tension in the rubber band, thus these Rites are not mere ceremonies or “nice things to do,” but rather are powerful infusions of actual grace that draw participants towards the sanctifying graces of full initiation.

he Gospels pr;sent to us various passages that, when looked at together, givri us a sense of whether or not baptism is necessary for salvation. fesus says, "No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit" (fohn 5:5), and "whoever believes and is baptized
will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned" (Mark 16:16). These passages show that salvation is the combination of baptism and believing. Those who "'see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ," but who also purposely reiect it, remain in darkness (see 2 Corinthians 4:3-4,6). The First Letter of lohn 4:7 tells us that "everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God." Here the gift of salvation comes to us in loving. Also, in Matthew 25, we have the great scene of the Last fudgment, where people are saved because they ministered to Christ in the poor and the hungry, even though they might not even have been aware of Christ's presence' Salvation here comes because of kind action. Baptism, then, combined with believing is certainly one of the means to salvation, but it's not the only means. In Gods goodness, other roads can lead us into the kingdom. God's mercy and goodness are not limited to the sacrament of baptism (see the Catechism af the Cath ali c Church, 1257
-n6A).
