5th Sunday Of Easter “Betrayal & Promise” Sts. Peter and Paul Church

May 14, 2017

The Readings for the Fifth Sunday of Easter have many themes. I would like to take this opportunity to discuss those that seem to stand out: Faith, Trust and Action, or Service. In the First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles (6:1-7), we learn of how this “new Church” was growing so rapidly with new members that it created the need for additional workers to help the Apostles with the important but less liturgical functions of the community. So, after praying for guidance, the apostles chose and anointed men from the Greek-speaking converts (Hellenists) who were "filled with faith and the Holy Spirit" to help. Faith and the Holy Spirit are prime criteria for anyone who is truly inspired and committed to serve Christ through His Church. Putting our faith into action requires trust in the Holy Spirit that our abilities will measure up. It should not be a way of fulfilling our own needs. The Second Reading, from the First Letter of St. Peter (2:4-9), talks about building up the Church and likens each member to a precious stone needed to build the community. Of course, the most important of these is the keystone or cornerstone. Each and every member of our parish is needed to build and maintain our church. No one person can consider himself or herself as too insignificant or too unimportant to serve. Jesus Himself was rejected by the chief priest and rulers of the temple of His time, yet He became the Divine Head, the cornerstone of all Christianity.

READINGS First Reading – Acts 6:1-7 Jesus’ disciples were increasing in number. One group murmured against another that their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. The disciples met and said it was not right that they should give up the ministry of the word to wait tables. The apostles prayed and laid hands on them and the word of God increased. Second Reading – 1 Peter 2:4-9 Peter challenged his hearers to come to the “living stone,” Jesus, and to be living stones themselves. They were a “chosen race, a “royal priesthood,” and a “holy nation.” They were “God’s own people,” and were bearing witness to Jesus Christ. Gospel – John 14:1-12

Jesus was preparing his disciples for his departure. They were confused and upset. But Jesus promised them a bright future regardless of his physical absence. He said, “He who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works that these will he do, because I go to the Father.” He said he would still be with them in spirit.

In the Gospel Reading, from the Gospel of John (14:1-12), we hear how the Apostles are saddened by the news that Jesus will be leaving them soon. This obviously undermined their confidence and they became fearful. Jesus assures them that He will be watching over them even if he is not pre-sent. Again, this takes faith and commitment. What would be your feelings if you were among the Apostles during the night of the Last Supper? Jesus is the divine head of the Church; therefore, the Church will live until the end of time. (See Matt: 28:20) Are you really a part of the Church? Remember, registration is only the first step to membership. It takes faith and commitment to be a member of Christ's Church; but most importantly, it takes active participation in its activities, liturgies as well as financial support to be a full-fledged member. Something to think about during your Prayer time this week!

Next Sunday’s Readings (Cycle A) 6th Sunday of Easter First Reading: Acts 8:5-8, 14-17 Second Reading: 1 Peter 3:15-18 Gospel: John 14:15-21

A blessed & Happy Mother’s Day to all of our special women who have given so much! Happy Mother’s Day to all Moms who gave their Fiat, like the Blessed Virgin Mary did to the Holy Spirit. To the mothers who gave their Fiat spiritually caring for children not theirs by blood, but theirs by God’s Will. We must never forget the grandmothers, who have given in this modern age, as mothers to children left alone. To all the stepmoms and caregivers who are as real as any Mom. We thank you and love you! We lovingly pray for all of you and know that you pray for us. Also we would like to thank all the volunteers who helped prepare the roses for our Mother’s Day tribute today. Mahalo & God Bless!

Faith Formation Throughout the year, the students have reviewed various key components, helping them to know, love and live our Catholic Faith. They've come to know by learning what we believe based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church; love by growing to understand why we believe it; and live by sharing how we can apply this to our daily lives through service. Some of the articles we've reviewed include the components of the Apostles’ Creed, Commandments and Beatitudes, Virtues, Works of Mercy, Gifts of the Holy Spirit, Precepts of the Church, Jesus’ true presence in the Eucharist and obtaining grace through the Sacraments. In class, the students were encouraged to share their thoughts and experiences and bring the Gospel to life. We found an underlying theme of love and forgiveness amid our discussions. As a class we also honor our Blessed Mother and reflect on Jesus' life through the devotion of the rosary. At the beginning of each class, we pray together a decade of the rosary, reflecting on the mysteries corresponding to the Liturgical season. During Advent, we reflected on Jesus and Mary through the Joyful mysteries. During Lent, we prayed the Stations of the Cross and reflected on Jesus' passion through the Sorrowful mysteries. And during Easter, we reflect on His resurrection through the Glorious mysteries. Some of the students who were in their second year of Confirmation are also preparing to receive their Sacrament in June. With gratitude, the students are recognizing along their faith journey that in order to gain the happiness of heaven, we must know, love and serve God in this world. YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY John 10:16 And I have other sheep, that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will heed my voice. So there shall be one flock, one shepherd.

ʻAnoʻai Kākou, The Young Adult Ministry continue to volunteer at the Kakaʻako family shelter, tutoring the school kids or simply playing with the little ones. They are experimenting with different days and activities, to see how they can help best. This week they scheduled Monday and Wednesday, so if you can spare an hour after work, please stop by.

The Young Adult Ministry would like to remind everyone that they have suspended meetings at the church after Sunday evening mass, but are planning other activities for the future. If you have any interest, questions, comments, ideas, or just want to get on the St. Don's distribution list to receive the updates, please e-mail us at trivialFyr@gmail.com or send us a text message at 305-8980378. Hope to see everyone soon!

STEWARDSHIP TIME – TALENT – TREASURE

STEWARDSHIP: THE VALUE OF A VOLUNTEER We have always known that the many parishioners who volunteer to serve in our various parish ministries, organizations and events are most valuable. But do you know how valuable? Based on the average hourly wage given by the National Independent Sector, it is currently estimated that one hour of volunteer time is worth $23.65. However, to us your volunteer time is invaluable. Through the gifts of time and talent that our parishioners so generously share, we are able to not only function better as a parish and keep our overhead costs down, but are truly the hands and feet of Jesus Christ here in Honolulu, as we serve our community in need. Mahalo Nui to all those faithful and generous stewards who volunteer in our parish! Your time is worth everything to us! Please see our brochure at the back of the church for more information on how you can help.

This food drive is sponsored by our Parish Catholic Care Project and will serve the needs of our parish Kupuna and Ohana who are struggling with food insecurity.
