Dear Parishioners, Visitors and Friends,
Hospitatity is one of universaI virtues and cherished American va[ues. ln "Environment and Art in Catho[ic Worship" our American bishops gave strong notice to the importance of hospitatity in our church gathering. "As common prayer and ecclesia[ experience, liturgy flourishes in a climate of hospitatity: a situation in which peopte are comfortabte with one another, either lcnowing or being introduced to one another; a space in which peopte are seated together, with mobil.ity, in view of one another as wet[ as the focal points of the rite, invotved as participants and not as spectators." ln a world where there is an abundance of loneliness, atienation and broken relationship, as noted by Pope on January 16,ZO1B in a meeting with bishops of Chite, "one of the prob[ems facing our societies today is the sense of being orphaned, the feeLing of not belonging to anyone. This "postmodern" feeling can seep into us and into our ctergy ... without this consciousness of being a peopte we wi[[ not be ab[e to sustain our [ife, our vocation and our ministry. To forget this carries many risks and distortions in our own experience, as individuats and in community, of the ministry that the Church has entrusted to us"
ln scripture, how important it is for us to understand the heart of Cod and why it matters for our faith to embody and [ive hospitatity. Jesus himsetf received hospital"ity from friends, Martha and Mary, sisters of Lazarus and extended it to strangers as he taught us in the story of the Cood Samaritan.
to church to find inspiration, to lay our hurts at the foot of the cross, to draw strength from the Eucharist, we are tikewise to show hospitatity to one another, and not only to church friends and famil.y members, but especiatty to those we do not know, the least of our brothers and sisters of Christ. Through our hospitality, we come into a deeper retationship with Cod and the love Cod has for att His So when we come

ren.
This week after the 11 a.m. Mass. we cetebrate the Rite of Acceptance for those futty initiated to be received into the church and confirmed as discipies of Jesus. How important it is to open our hearts and pray for those who begin the journey searching for Cod, relationships, and tife in faith. We may never l<now whose
tife we effect until the great day of the Lord when we are ushered in to the joy of our Father's house in heaven.

nights, so will the $on of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights" (Matthew 1B:40). Unlike Jesus, Jonah initially balks at God's call until he grudgingly accepts and preaches to the city of Nineveh. ln his rebellion, he gets in a boat and goes the opposite direction from where God was calling. Eventually he was thrown overboard and swallowed by the fish, seen painted at his side. After a three-night stomachache, the fish spewed Jonah up on the shore, back where he had started. Jonah looks up to heaven with a weary Ionging, which might denote his melancholy personality. The fig tree further reinforces his weakness because it recalls the episode when Jonah lay under the fig tree in depression and lethargy. Like Peter and Andrew, James and John, God entered Jonah's life and called him. Unlike the apostles, it took him a while to say yes. We can also be slow to respond to the invitation of God in our soul, whether in big or small things. Perhaps the attraction of the world or fear of sacrifice keeps us from saying yes. Yet his voice is constant and persistent. Michelangelo paints Jonah dangling above Ihe Lasf Judgment as if to subtly say, you are cordially invited to say yes to God's patient callings...while you still have time. Ma* Haydu, LC 201

Thank you for your faithful stewardship. Your weekly gifts enable us to continue the mission of Christ in our part of the world. I may think that rny gifts are small, but over time adds up to a substantial amount. Your letter for your income tax reporting was mailed Friday, |anuary 19, 2018. For all those who use weekly envelopes, you will receive a letter, For those who do not use them a letter was sent to you if your total was more than $250.00 .
Either at the beginning or the end of life. We are made in the image and likeness of God. Everyane deserves ta be embraced by the love and mercy af God.
Offering our suffering, then, is a way of uniting ourselves in a particular way with Jesus and with his suffering. The sacrificial nature of love, which is written into our human nature, means that we long to give ourselves away in love, out of love for another. From this reality, of which there is none greater, to suffer for love brings peace, and even joy. To embrace our Cross with Christ out of love for

Aloha Parents! Flrst if all we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for entrusting us with your childs religoius education and spiritual growth. We, as a team, focus on the gospel and translating it in such a way where your child can better understand ifs rnessage, taklng that message and incorporating it in their every day life. We also have activities where we tap into the children's creative and artistic side. From Halloween cookie decorating, making their own Advent wreath to take home and pray with their families, and even participating in poster contests sponsored by the Knight's of Columbus. We also have our class pet "AIex''! It is amazing how our students come out of their shells and literally blossomed spiritualty before our eyes. We have so many talented children! We hope and pray that with our continued guidance, support and encouragement we will be able to mold these wonderful children to share their beautiful gifts with our parish.
We are definitely looking forward to the upcoming rnonths where we willhelp prepare the children to receive the sacraments of Reconcillation, First Holy Communion and Confi rmation. Mahalo and God Bless! Ms. Marfie Ms. Lahoma Ms. Leanne

John 5:6-8 This is he who came by water and
blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the \ilater and the blood. And the Spirit is the witness, because the spirit is the truth. There are three witnesses, the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree.
'Ano'ai KEkou, Do you have any new year's resolutions? How long
do they last? Our ability to transform ourselves don't just originate from within - we have to open ourselves to the trinity. Filled with the Spirit, baptized in Water, and delivered by the Blood of Christ, we can do anything. I hope this year we can transform ourselves and this island. Last year we ourselves started programs, focusing a lot on education, and reached out to the diocese, as well as many nonprofits. Though few responded, we created close relationships that I'm sure will continue to grow. From now on, every other week we'll combine over at Mary, Star of the Sea for a weekdnd activity, alternating Bible study and an outdoor activity: For example, this Sunday afternoon {14 Jan 2018}, we'll have Bible Study in their social hall from 2-4, and on the 27th (Saturday morning) we'll go down Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail. ACTS retreats have enriched the lives of hundreds of thousands of people; men and r,vomen, teens
and retirees, rich and poor, Catholic and non-Catholic, in the United States as well as other countries. It has reinvigorated the spiritual lives of individuals, of families, of entire parishes. Yet 25 years ago, it did not even exist. The way this wonderful program came to be is a beautiful blend of the Holy Spirit and those who listen to His words, People have credited ACTS with saving their lives, saving their marriages, convincing them to be ordained as priests or deacons, or leading them to the religior.rs life, simply by opening their eyes and their hearts to God's word.

trying toc hard. You've heard how some baseball hitters press \Jvhen they're trying to come out of a slump. Their very effori to overcome their probiem makes them tighten up more. They 619 5e worrieci about the mechanics of their swing, stance, or grip that they can't hit the ball" That's r,vhy their coach might advise them to stay loose in the batter's box" V1e couid ilse the same advice in our approach to prayer. Do your best to pray well, but don't be too upset if your prayer is not "perfect." Some scrupuious Catholics r,vi11 repeat a prayer if their mind wanders the first time through, br-rt this isn't aclvisable. I suggest that you make a good intention, say your prayer and, even if your mind wanders, don't repeat it. Remember that distractions are as natural as breathing, and even the saints couldn't pray without them. When a clistraction comes, treat it as you would a fly buzzing around your head. Occasionaliy shoo it away, but don't spend all lrsu1 time anci concentration on it. The good Lord can read your heart. He loves you |ust as yoll are, clistracted mind and all. Sundaybull etin
