When I was growing up, famity wasn't in some way it i: today. We lived in the same home or at least close ir
proximity. We didn't have what we have today. But wr had a close-knit famil.y in the order of creation: Gor first; famity second; work, third. When this order wa followed, and Christian values reinforced, it made up a that was lost or destroyed by war and separation. The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph The Joyful Family Sts. Peter and Paul Church
December 30, 2018
GOOD NEWS! In Rest on the Flight Into Egypt, The Holy Family, Francesco Mancini painted realistic details that make the scene as ordinary as any family playing with their child in a park. Mary has a bowl of water in her hand, perhaps ready to offer a drink to Jesus after he tastes a strawberry. A silver bowl of food for the baby rests on a white baby blanket. Perhaps it was just placed there by Joseph, for Jesus has finished his vegetables and now Dad offers dessert! A traveling basket sits in front of a water jug. These instruments show that they are travelers, and the Egyptian obelisk in the background indicates their destination. The circumstances are precarious yet joyful, even playful, in their following of God’s path. This was just one of the trying times for the Holy Family, which would eventually include losing the Child Jesus in the temple. As their whole focus in this painting is on Jesus, imagine their fear when they can no longer find the heart of their family. This is a fantastic image of the joys and challenges of family life. There is joy in having Jesus in our midst, and no sacrifice is too great when he is present. But when he is lost from the center, fears and anxieties enter. The words of Colossians sum up this attitude, making one think that Paul had a good idea of what virtues family life require! Let’s work in our families to have Jesus at the center, and once he is there, to “put on” all the virtues that his presence inspires —Fr. Mark Haydu, LC
Reading I - Sirach 3:2—6, 12—14 or I Samuel 1:20—22, 24—28 The lovely story of Hannah and Samuel is an example of the goal of parenting – to give your children back to God. Samuel, at the correct age, was presented to the Temple and remained there under the supervision of Eli. Reading II - Colossians 3:12—21 or I John 3:1—2, 21—24
We are called God’s children. Ultimately the goal of our growth as children of God is to become like the model of our humanity, Jesus Christ. Reading III - Luke 2:41--52 Every family member is exceptional in some way. Every child should be helped to pursue his or her own individual destiny.
For Reflection:
Does one of the virtues mentioned by St. Paul catch my attention? Should I pray for and practice that virtue a little more? © 2018 Liguori Publications, Liguori, MO 63057-9999. Printed in U.S.A. WHAT DOES THE SOLEMNITY OF MARY MEAN? The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God is a liturgical celebration observed on January 1st. It is a holy day of obligation for Catholics, meaning that Mass attendance is required (the Mass obligation is waived in the Diocese of Honolulu). The use of the word “Solemnity” here is not a statement about Mary’s personality. It is a designation used for certain days within the liturgical (church-based) calendar of the Church. Solemnities are the highest rank of liturgical celebration, higher than feast days or memorials. By celebrating a solemnity dedicated to Mary’s motherhood, the Church highlights the significance of her part in the life of Jesus, and emphasizes that he is both human and divine. Though New Year’s Day may seem more like a day for football and hangovers than for Mary, there’s a beautiful spiritual significance in celebrating her during the heart of the Christmas season. Pope Paul VI, in his apostolic exhortation Marialis Cultus (1974), called the Solemnity of Mary “a fitting occasion for renewing adoration of the newborn Prince of Peace, for listening once more to the glad tidings of the angels (cf.Lk 2:14), and for imploring from God, through the Queen of Peace, the supreme gift of peace.” By Ginny Moyer Jan 2011, BustedHalo.com (a website for Catholic Youth)

Solemnity of Epiphany In many countries the customary day to exchange gifts is the Feast of the Three Wise Men, January 6th. Join your parish family and the Faith Formation children in the sharing of gifts and talents. The children will practice during their classes and those with special talents will share their gifts after the 11:00 a.m. Mass next week. We have been delightfully surprised each year to see so many who have hidden talents in our midst. Come offer your gifts to the Christ Child as so many have done throughout the year. Call the office (941-0675) if you have a gift to share or would like to help with bringing food or setting up. No talent is too small to share. Mahalo to all those who shared their gifts and talents to help make this Christmas truly a celebration of love for one another.

The Church emphasizes the feast of the Holy Family. But lesus does not seern to be much of a family person. Instances in Scripture when Jesus was a child show him ignoring, even refecting, Mary alld loseph" { t becomes clear, as }esus grou/s in age and l- wisdom, that he has not come to build his own iittle family, but to build a worldwide family
: of disciples" This family would claim God as the z Father of all, with ]esus and others as brothers and { sisters in the family. Ail who followed him would :. be as dear to Jesus as his mcther or his foster i father. ; Mary's and Joseph's roles were not only to be ]esus' earthbound parents but, more importantly, to be examples of how to follow Gcd's purpose. Vlary and Joseph accepted God's path for them, even thor, igh they didn't know where it would lead. IVIary calls herself the handmald of the Lord, and Joseph foilows God's instruction and marries Mary, even though it was contrary to ali reason and caused him scandal. In the family of God, we seek and foliow God's purpose. We are to say yes with iVlary; we are to imltate |oseph in following Gad's direction, even though our actions may seem countercultural or even scandaious. ]esus said plainly: "Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother" (Mark 3:35). God's will becomes the cornerstone of lesus' new, universal family of humankind. Every Christian famiiy, then, has a double task in raising their children: teaching and inspiring them to love their biood family, but also teaching and inspiring thern to iove and believe in |esus and seek God's
