Fourth Sunday Of Advent True Love Means Sacrifice Sts. Peter and Paul Church

December 23, 2018

GOOD NEWS! God is often present in the little, hidden things of life. Take for example the small town of Bethlehem. This place barely appeared on the maps of the time. Yet in this dull town, overlooked by all, God wished to be born. God isn’t into bling. In her womb the Virgin Mary quietly carried the Light of the World, but it happened in a way unknown to anyone. He is the Light of the World, shining to catch our attention, but he does so in silence, humility, and intimacy. There is a second aspect of the Incarnation to learn here. Christmas was about a real sacrifice. Mary and Jesus offered their very selves. Hebrews says it wasn’t an animal or a wheat offering but Jesus’ very body and blood. The same for Mary, as it was her life, her virginity, her very intimacy, that she was opening to God when she agreed to be the mother of the Lord. It’s easy to be generous when it doesn’t touch too close to home. So try not to look for glitz and externals this Christmas but for God’s hidden presence. And imitate Jesus and Mary by giving of your very self. It’s not about a fast, a donation, or extra prayers—as good as those Advent practices are. But all of this prepares us to give our very selves to him in trust through the hidden acts of love of every day. —Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

Reading I - Micah 5:1-4a The prophet Micah lived during the time when Bethlehem was promised to be the birthplace of the Messiah. The people of Bethlehem must have waited anxiously for this promise to be fulfilled. They would have to wait another seven hundred years for the Messiah to appear. Reading II - Hebrews 10:5-10 The celebration of Christ’s death on the cross is the Eucharist. The old system of sacrifice had been announced as displeasing to God. Now, Bethlehem and Calvary cannot be separated. Reading III - John 1:1-18 When joy is shared it is multiplied. Mary and Elizabeth both shared the joy of knowing that they were to birth children of promise. Their shared joy was appropriate, especially given the unprecedented significance of their sons.

For Reflection:

What hidden acts of love can you offer during this upcoming Christmas? Are there ways you can point out to your children God’s presence in the little things? © 2018 Liguori Publications, Liguori, MO 63057-9999. Printed in U.S.A. DECEMBER Prayer Intentions from

Pope Francis Evangelization – In the Service of the Transmission of Faith That people, who are involved in the service and transmission of faith, may find, in their dialogue with culture, a language suited to the conditions of the present time.

December 25th marks the beginning of the Christmas Season not the end. It will begin very soon. We’ll start to see Christmas trees on the curbsides or propped up against the back sheds. It usually starts the day after Christmas, with the number of discarded trees increasing until New Year’s Day when it starts to taper off. In the malls and on the city streets, the decorations are coming down, too. The After-Christmas sales are booming and the Return lines wind round and round the stores as folks come to exchange their unwanted Christmas presents. For many, the Christmas season ends on December 26. For faithful Catholics, the Christmas season begins at midnight on December 24 and continues well into January. While the rest of the world is winding down their Christmas celebrations, we’re just gearing up for ours. I feel so sad for those who miss out on the feasts and festivities that come after Christmas. They all have such deep meaning and are so rich with tradition that I wouldn’t miss them for anything in the world. I look forward to every one of them and try to do something for home and family to make those days special. We start with Christmas Octave. Since the eighth century, the Church has observed octaves – eight days of celebration following a feast or solemnity. Christmas has its own octave, and so does Easter. For Christmas, the octave begins on Christmas Day and ends on January 1, the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. According to the to the Church, the Christmas season officially ends with the Baptism of the Lord, observed this year on January 13. That gives us 20 days to celebrate Christmas, and all of them begin and not end on Christmas Day. 2

Last month our volunteers helped distribute 144 boxes to those who qualified for the Federal Surplus boxes. If you are able to volunteer please come at 11:00 a.m. to check in.

Human trafficking violates the sanctity, dignity, and fundamental rights of the human person. The United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons defines it as "the recruitment, transportation, harboring or receipt of persons by means of force, fraud or coercion…for the purpose of exploitation." According to the U.S. State Department, human trafficking appears in "many guises", often taking the form of commercial sexual exploitation, the prostitution of minors, debt bondage, and involuntary servitude. The United States government, and increasingly the international community, utilize the umbrella term "trafficking in persons" to define all forms of modern slavery. Almost every nation is affected by trafficking, as a country of origin, transit or destination for victims—the United States is no exception. Every year, millions of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers in their own countries and abroad. No sector or industry is immune from human trafficking. According to the United Nation's International Labor Organization's (ILO) 2016 "Global Estimates of Modern Slavery," nearly 40.3 million people are victims of modern slavery, of whom 24.9 million are entrapped in forced labor and sexual slavery and 15.4 million subjected to forced marriage. Through coercion, deceit, or force, they are trapped in jobs and situations from which they cannot escape. Traffickers lure men, women, and children with false promises of good jobs, education, economic security, and love. Once enticed, traffickers keep their victims from seeking help through means such as confiscating identification documents, threats of violence against the victim or their family, and physical or psychological abuse.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month

Do you know someone in our parish who would benefit from receiving a food bag to help them make ends meet? Please tell them to contact our Catholic Care Helpline (808) 941-0675 All information we receive remains confidential.

CCD

Luke 1:42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”

Aloha Parishioners, Families, Friends and Visitors,

Today we celebrate the 4th Sunday of Advent! As we continue to prepare ourselves for the celebration of the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ, at Christmas, let it be a time of hopeful waiting, a time when we answer the call of John the Baptist: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” May our prayerful observance of this season of Advent draw us closer to our loving and merciful God.

How differently do we act when someone is watching? This starts from when we’re babies-after all, even a two-year old has a concept of right and wrong when making a choice. So when we grow up and learn about Jesus and Mother Mary, how does that change us, knowing that there’s always someone watching over us? Jesus is always reaching out to us - it’s up to us where to turn. The church reaches out to everyone, specifically St. Don’s for the young adults, Please join the community so we can help watch each other and grow in our faith…. * Tuesdays ESL (English as a Second Language): Practice English conversation Tuesdays 5-6 pm * Thursdays Bible Study: Young adults Bible study at church Thursdays 5-6 pm * Second Saturday Morning Church Cleaning: Once a month, just for a couple of hours, we help clean the church from 8.30 am

This season of grace provides an opportunity for us to reflect upon God’s loving mercy in our lives. It also challenges us to grow in mercy and forgiveness toward others. God’s mercy is immeasurable, and we pray that our mercy will increase.

We’ll keep looking for other ways we can help, but in the meantime, our next local volunteer activity is on Sunday, September 16 from 8:30-10:30 to help remove trash, plastics and other debris from the surrounding beach and park areas of Ala Moana. http://www.waikikiaquarium.org/interact/specialevents/ala-moana-beach-cleanup/

While others are focusing on external gifts, may we remain focused on the true meaning of this season that is the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. May God bless each and every one of us and those whom we love.

As the young adults ministry of Sts. Peter & Paul, inspired by St. Don Bosco, we wish to volunteer, learn, reflect, and be happy. Servite Domine in laetitia (Serve God cheerfully). Being part of this group, in this phase of our journey in life, will allow us to help each other to grow spiritually, intellectually and physically. If you have any interest, questions, comments, ideas, etc. please e-mail us at trivialFyr@gmail.com or txt 305-898-0378. Hope to see everyone soon!

Our Faith Formation students will be presenting the Nativity of the Lord on Christmas Eve at the 6 p.m. Family Mass. We encourage our students and family members to participate in the “Talent Show” on The Epiphany of the Lord on Sunday, January 6, 2019 after the 11 a.m. Mass in the courtyard. Please join us for fellowship! Wishing you a Season of Hope, Bernie Lopez and Anna Flores and Faith Formation Coordinators
