2nd Sunday Of Easter/Divine Mercy Sunday “The Church In Boundary Situations” Sts. Peter and Paul Church
The theme of the readings for this, the first Sunday after Easter, continues to reflect the joy of Easter as it should. We too should not let that joy fade from our lives so easily. It is something to be nourished through prayer and meditation. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the central theme and event of all Christianity; and the more we understand it, the more meaningful our life here on earth will be to us and to others. Just listen to the readings and see how they tune into this concept.
In the First Reading, from the Acts of the Apostles (2:4247), we read where all the followers of Jesus, not just the apostles, were so enthusiastic about this “new way” of life that they lived in communities in order to share everything, both material and spiritual. This way, they could help in nourishing and sharing their newly found spiritual life in Christ with each other. Because of this joy, many others came to believe and "the Lord added to their number." The Second Reading is from the First Letter of St. Peter (1:3-9). This portion of Peter's letter is a brief summary of the Christian life then and now. We should not think of Christ's Resurrection as something that happened 2000 plus years ago, but rather, as something that happens daily in every Mass— not just those we attend, but all Masses. They are the greatest prayers of Thanksgiving that one could offer for this sublime act of love. The Gospel Reading is from the Gospel of John (20:1931). Place yourself into this scene: It is the night of the Resurrection and Jesus appears in all His divine Glory before the apostles. Can you image the joy after the shock subsides? They must have been bouncing all over the room. Then Thomas, who was not present at the first appearance of Jesus, throws cold water on that event by his refusing to believe that Christ was resurrected. It takes another appearance of Christ to convince Thomas who then utters that great phrase of humility, "My Lord and my God!" Are you somewhat like Thomas, having a difficult time in believing? To doubt, as Thomas did, is not wrong or sinful. However, to leave it there and do nothing about it is wrong. Sometimes God puts doubts in our head in order for us to get moving toward finding the truth, through prayer or study or both. Something to think about during your Prayer time this week!
April 23, 2017
READINGS First Reading – Acts 2:42-47 Peter’s preaching in the first part of Acts was powerful that three thousand people in one day were added to the Christian community. They became active and did many of the things churches do today: worshipping, praying, learning, and sharing. Two Greek words for “good” are “agathos” and “kalos,” and they described this growing church. Second Reading – 1 Peter 1:3-9 Peter saw the Christian life as having its source in God alone. He understood it to consist of salvation by grace through faith, and holiness through obedience to God in Christ. Grace was a concept Peter held in common with Paul. The believer is born to a “living hope,” and that hope is founded on the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Gospel – John 20:19-31
In Jesus’ resurrection appearances he was not only fulfilling promises, but was establishing the continuity between the earthly Jesus and the risen Christ. The appearances were intended to provide a transition – from the seen to the unseen, the temporal to the eternal, the limited to the universal, and the former to the latter.
Next Sunday’s Readings (Cycle A) 3rd Sunday of Easter First Reading: Acts 2:14, 22-33 Second Reading: 1 Peter 1:17-21 Gospel: Luke 24:13-35

STEWARDSHIP TIME – TALENT – TREASURE Mahalo
to our countless volunteers who served in our Triduum Liturgies. They put countless hours to making them so inspiring.
Love does not measure; it just gives.
STEWARDSHIP: THE VALUE OF A VOLUNTEER We have always known that the many parishioners who volunteer to serve in our various parish ministries, organizations and events are most valuable. But do you know how valuable? Based on the average hourly wage given by the National Independent Sector, it is currently estimated that one hour of volunteer time is worth $23.65. However, to us your volunteer time is invaluable. Through the gifts of time and talent that our parishioners so generously share, we are able to not only function better as a parish and keep our overhead costs down, but are truly the hands and feet of Jesus Christ here in Honolulu, as we serve our community in need. Mahalo Nui to all those faithful and generous stewards who volunteer in our parish! Your time is worth everything to us! Please see our brochure at the back of the church for more information on how you can help. OPERATION RICE BOWL Our community changed lives this Lent, and CRS Rice Bowl wants to say thank you! Don’t forget to turn in your CRS Rice Bowl in the box in the courtyard on Sunday, April 23, 2017 Mahalo for your sacrifices this Lenten season!

Origin of Divine Mercy Sunday
Saint Faustina: Mankind’s need for the message of Divine Mercy took on dire urgency in the 20th Century, when civilization began to experience an “eclipse of the sense of God” and, therefore to lose the understanding of the sanctity and inherent dignity of human life. In the 1930s, Jesus chose a humble Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, to receive private revelations concerning Divine Mercy that were recorded in her Diary. St. John Paul explains: This was precisely the time when those ideologies of evil, nazism and communism, were taking shape. Sister Faustina became the herald of the one message capable of off-setting the evil of those ideologies, that fact that God is mercy—the truth of the merciful Christ. And for this reason, when I was called to the See of Peter, I felt impelled to pass on those experiences of a fellow Pole that deserve a place in the treasury of the universal Church. ~ Pope Saint John Paul II, Memory and Identity (2005) On May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of St. Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday.
How to Pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy: (using rosary with 5 decades) 1. M ake the Si gn o f the C ross In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 2. Opti ona l O peni ng Praye rs -You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth

Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.
The
Image: Jesus appeared to St. Faustina in a vision, with his right hand raised in a blessing and his left touching his garment above his heart. Red and white rays emanate from his heart, symbolizing the blood and water that was poured out for our salvation and our sanctification. The Lord requested that “Jesus, I trust in You” be inscribed under his image. Jesus asked that his image be painted and venerated throughout the world: “I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish” (Diary, no. 48) and “By means of this image I will grant many graces to souls” (D. 742).
7. On the Te n S mal l B ea ds

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. 10 . Op tion al Cl osin g P rayer
Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion — inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself. Amen.
Faith Formation Children and Parents Remembering the Passion of the Lord Children, parents and catechists create tableaux representing successive incidents during Jesus’s passage from Pilate’s house to his crucifixion at Calvary. Through this creation of a series of tableaux of The Stations of the Cross, also known as the Via Dolorosa, shared by our Faith Formation family we were reminded of the humble manner in which Jesus was willing to set aside any privilege of deity in order to provide a path to salvation through His sacrifice. The Stations of the Cross is a narration of the final hours in the life of Jesus Christ on earth that continues to provide spiritual meaning for every Christian and application to our everyday lives. Mahalo to all our ministries who shared their talents in prayer and song this Lent.
YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY Qoh. 3:1-2 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; Easter Sunday was the sixteenth day of this month, and began the sixteenth week of 2017. Although the liturgical calendar began on the first Sunday of Advent... after seven weeks of Lent, our season of reflection, in Easter we celebrate a new beginning. Let's see what we can share throughout this Easter season, both with each other and the community at large. With whoever can spare an hour or two on Sunday afternoons, we'll be spending time with the kids at the Kakaʻako shelter at four o'clock. And with whoever can stay an hour after the
evening mass, we'll share with each other our experiences, ideas, and make plans for the future. Of course, you don't have to wait until then - anytime you have any interest, questions, comments, ideas, etc. please e-mail us at trivialFyr@gmail.com or text to 305-8980378. Hope to see everyone soon!

union of body and soul. Nlade in God's image and likeness, we cannot separate our physical life from our spiritual life. When our bodies die, our spiritual existence continues. Thus, to believe that we are morally bound to exhaust all possible medical treatments incorrectly overemphasizes the good of our physical life here on earth-r,vhich our faith teaches comprises, in the end, shador,vs and dust-and overlooks the good of our spiritual life as well as the eternal destiny to which we are called by God. There comes a time when medical intervention, beyond that required to keep a person comfortable and to relieve pain, is unnecessary and can excessively burden the patient or the family. Elderly and imminently dying z a patients are not obligated to undertake unreasonable c or excessively burden some medical procedures or to Llse measures that sustain life beyond basic nursing care such as proper hygiene, food and fluids (when they can be assimilated into the body), comfortable room temperature, turning to avoid bed sores, and other means. Having conversations with loved ones about this matter is an excellent way to find support during times of suffering and loss. "Do not resuscitate (DNR)" orders can be part of the process of letting go of the life we have knoi,vn while embracing the ner,r, life that awaits us in Jesus Christ. Source: Li.quarian, March 2011
