31st Sunday In Ordinary Time
“Whatever Happened To Salvation?”
October 30, 2016 READINGS
Come Down, Zacchaeus! As devout Christians we are well-represented by Zacchaeus. He was a little man. In the grand scheme of things, how often do we consider ourselves to be insignificant? Part of this may be credited to some level of humility but there's always that inner self-demoralizing voice that asks, "How is it possible that I matter to God?" The answer is simple but not necessarily understandable: We are sinners, which bewilderingly qualifies us as recipients of Christ's love. It is in our inner house that He dwells so that He may stay with us always. Through prayer and silence we may visit that inner house to be with our Lord where that selfdemoralizing voice is overpowered by the Voice that says: "Salvation has come to this house." As qualifiers of salvation, we are indeed descendants of Abraham. While Jesus may never require us to literally give up half of our possessions, He does ask for detachment from them. "The Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost." For Christians this is a most comforting verse because the word "was" is past tense. In salvation history there was a time when we were among the lost, but through Baptism and by surrendering our lives to Christ's care and accepting His gift of salvation we can now joyfully look ahead without ever having to look back. But the push forward should be an ongoing process of spiritual growth. 1
First Reading – Wisdom 11:22-12:2 God saves us from many things in life, including our cosmic insignificance. We are like a single grain of wheat. We are like a drop of morning dew. Yet God treasures each one of us as if there were only one of us. And God saves us from unimportance by letting us share in his redemptive plan for creation. Second Reading - 2 Thessalonians 1:11-2:2
St. Paul made it clear that God’s saving work takes place, not in the heavenly realm, but right here on earth. He advised the Christians at Thessalonica to forget about when the Lord would return. God has work to do in us and with us, and we have work to do for God here on the earth. Gospel - Luke 19:1-10 The life of Zacchaeus provides a profound picture of the meaning of salvation. When Christ came into his life it actually changed the way Zacchaeus lived. Becoming a child of God is a matter of living a godly life. One thing this means is that we cannot separate love for God and love for the neighbor.
Next Sunday’s Readings (Cycle C) 32nd Sunday In Ordinary Time 1st Reading: 2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14 2nd Reading: 2 Thessalonians 2:16-3:5 Gospel: Luke 20:27-38 or 20:27,34-38

These can be done privately or as communal, oral prayer. The Church has always encouraged private, personal prayer such as meditation, in which the mind, in God’s presence, thinks about God and divine things. The times listed above indicate when the communal, oral devotions should begin in order to allow time afterwards for meditation and personal reflection, including 15 minutes of silence before Mass begins. No group or communal prayers will be allowed outside of the schedule in order to respect the time for personal private prayer. Ministries and apostolates are encouraged to help with these devotions. Please call the parish office to indicate your interest.

For those who are baptized and have not been Confirmed or have not received their First Holy Communion, you are welcome to join us in preparing to complete your Sacraments of Initiation. JOIN US FOR FAMILY MASS st
rd
Family Mass is on the 1 and 3 Sunday of each at 9:00 a.m. During the Family Mass, the homily is addressed to families and to the children, giving them a better understanding of the Scripture readings. The children read Scripture that is from a Children's Lectionary. Our next Family Mass will be on November 6 at 9:00 a.m.
There is dismissal for Children's Liturgy of the Word at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on the other Sundays. Father will invite the children forward for a blessing. The children proceed to the reception area where a church like atmosphere is provided for them to hear the Word of God through prayers, song and readings that they are able to better understand and learn how to be disciples of Jesus. Children will rejoin their families at the Preparation of the Gifts (Offertory). Faith Formation classes will follow after the 9am Mass. rd
We are still looking for Catechists and Aides for 3 th to 7 grades.
Please join the Faith Formation Team. See Yvonne Toma or Iwalani White for more information at the refreshment table or call the office at 941-0675.
