Ascension of the Lord (B) A cts 1:1–11; Eph 1:17–23 or Eph 4:1–13 or 4:1–7, 11–13; Mk 16:15–20

The beginning of the Book of Acts presents a summary of the life of Christ and how he called and taught the apostles in the Holy Spirit. After his resurrection, Christ kept the apostles in Jerusalem, where they prayed together with the Virgin and awaited the coming of the Holy Spirit which would give them power to witness to him beyond the city and into the outlying countries and regions, just as the Gospel reading commands. This Spirit given to them by Christ is a spirit of mission and witness. When Jesus was finished speaking, when his revelation had finished, he was taken to heaven. And the apostles were left standing there, looking up after him. That looking up can be interpreted as a longing for Jesus’ presence that was no longer in human form. Things had radically changed. Jesus’ mission had finished, and now theirs was beginning. Their situation is the same as ours. We are sent on a mission! An essential element of being Christian is to under- stand that we are sent into the world to build Christ’s kingdom. We are his missionaries, his representatives. He counts on us to go into the world and bring his message to all his beloved children just as he did—with preaching, testimony, and love. Jesus doesn’t send us to be comfortable, professionally successful, and wealthy. He sends us to be missionaries!

AROUND THE PARISH AND THE DIOCESE

Parish priests to gather at Turtle Bay for annual convocation Hawaii’s priests will flock to the Turtle Bay Resort May 14-18 as they do every year around this time. It’s their annual Convocation of Priests, a week away to contemplate, talk, pray, learn, listen and socialize. Please pray for them.

We ask our parishioners and guests kokua and exercise reasonable caution and care when entering and/or exiting church grounds. We remind you that the fine for the violation of jaywalking is $130. The church also asks our driving parishioners and guests to exercise caution and good judgment in entering and exiting the church's parking lots in relation to on-coming traffic and/or pedestrians. Thank you for your continued understanding and cooperation in these important matters.

This year’s theme: “Stewardship: A Way of Life.” At the convocation, the priests will participate in seven sessions on the stewardship theme. Built into the schedule as the culmination of the convocation is the ordination to the priesthood of William “Pila” Tulua at 6 p.m. at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa. We are so blessed to have Fr. Sebastian Chako who will be celebrating Mass the week of May 14th - 18th while Father Khanh and Father Sieg are at convocation.

!!! IMPORTANT: May 21 – 25 NO PARKING Makai side of the church from 2:00 p.m. to midnight. The contractors will be painting the wall.

Bishop Silva to ordain William M. ‘Pila’ Tulua a priest on May 18 at the co-cathedral

2nd Floor Activity Center

Anyone who is mourning the loss of a loved one is encouraged to attend and bring a guest. Meet for six consecutive weeks. May 12, 26 and June 2,9, 2018 Group Meets from 1:00-3:00 pm

Bishop Larry Silva will ordain former tour bus driver William M. “Pila” Tulua a priest on May 18 in the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa. The ordination liturgy, the final event of the annual convocation of Hawaii priests, begins at 6 p.m. Tulua made his mandated pre-ordination retreat during Holy Week at St. Joseph Seminary in Dunwoodie, New York, spending “many hours in silence before the tabernacle.” For Tulua, 54, a California native who moved to Hawaii in 1986 to attend college, the path to holy orders was a long and varied one. Besides working in Hawaii’s industry, he had also been a medical assistant and a monk.

Dwn?ndld It says in the Gospel account of the ascension that Jesus was taken up body and soul into heaven. Why would |esus need a body in heaven? n the Old Testament, fIheaven.

there was a great chasm between our bodies and that no one could see the face of God and live, let alone live with God in heaven. fesus came to bridge that gap through his body and blood. fesus' glorified body is in heaven to show that we, too, will be glorified like him, showing that, as part of God's creation, our bodies are inherently good and worthy of heavenly life. f esus' ascension will be followed by our ascension into heaven. Our bodies will become like |esus' Heaven won't contain glorifled body. Our life with God will become disembodied spiritual like )esus' Iife with God. We see in |esus our own future. Our lives and our loves will not be beings, but will be full of snuffed out like a candle. Rather, we will carry glorified human bodies them in our spiritual and glorified self, leaving without the inadequacies behind pain, death, and human inadequacies. we suffer now. Christianity is a flesh-and-blood religion. We can't bypass the physical to reach the spiritual. |esus ascended into heaven, body and soul. We do not reach higher spiritual truths by rejecting the material world. Heaven won't contain disembodied spiritual beings, but will be full of glorified human bodies without the inadequacies we suffer now. Saint Paul, in 1 Corinthians 15:35-40, tries to explain this to the people of Corinth. He tells them that the splendor of the heavenly body is of one kind and the splendor of the earthly body is another. Sundaybulletin@Liguori.org We were told
