Children of God Today we give thanks to Mary, the Mother of God. Her response to the

Numbers is the fourth book of the Pentateuch. Thirty-nine chapters consist of laws, narratives, and poems that cover Israel's forty years of desert wandering. Special emphasis was given to the beginning and end of this period. The commanding personality of Moses is apparent everywhere in

spoke to His chosen people, the Israelites, through prophets (see Hebrews l: l-2), and imparted His blessings upon them through His priests, as we hear in today's First Reading.

But now, He has sent His Son-to reveal His glory and His kingdom, to make His way of salvation known to all nations, as we sing in today's Psalm. In the Infant Iying in the manger, God has shone His face upon us (see John 14:8-9). of Israel, an heir of God's covenant with Abraham, by His circumcision in today's Gospel (see Genesis

- Galatians 4:4-7

Paul has been treating the subjects of the law, on one hand, and of faith on the other. When the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law. This was so that those who had lived under the law might live as children of God.

As children of God, Paul says today, we are heirs of the Father's blessings, which He promised to bestow on all peoples through the descendants of Abraham (see Genesis 12:3;22:18; Galatians 3:14). This is the blessing which Aaron imparted to Israel, the people descended from Abraham. And this blessing comes to us through Mary and the Child.

This is the good news of great joy that the shepherds make known in Bethlehem today (see Luke 2:10).

Like the shepherds, we too should make haste today to find Jesus with Mary and Joseph, and to glorify God for His blessings. And like Mury, we should keep His word and

RECITATION OF THE HOLY ROSARY Monday - Saturday (11:15 a.m.) will be led in different languages as follows Monday - Filipino & English Tuesday - Korean Wednesday - Legion of Mary (English) Thursday - Chuukese Friday - lnternational Saturday for Families Sunday 5:1Spm - Young Adults OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP Wednesday following the 7am Mass MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS DEVOTION Friday following the 7am Mass DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION & CHAPLET Friday 10:45 am, followed by Rosary & Benediction

Devotions of the Catholic Church are ways of showing our love to the Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the angels and the saints. These can be done privately or as communal, oral prayer. The Church has always encouraged private, personal prayer such as meditation, in which the mind, in God's presence, thinks about God and divine things.

The times listed above indicate when the communal, oral devotions should begin in order to allow time afterwards for meditation and personal reflection, including 15 minutes of silence before Mass

One of the most beautiful and intimate ways we participate in the Mass is through the reception of Holy Communion, the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. The General lnstruction on the Roman Missalasserted the "meaning" of Communion is most clearly signified when given under both species- both the Sacred Host and the Precious Blood. Here the imagery of receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, of being joined with the Messianic Banquet, becomes most clear (#24O). However, no where has the Church mandated that both species must be offered.

We must remember that "the whole and entire Christ and the true sacrament are received under either species" (Councit of Trent, Doctrine on Communion Under Both Species and on Communion of Little Children). lf one receives either the Precious Blood, or the Sacred Host, or both, one receives the fullness of the grace of the sacrament. This doctrine became very clear to me when I was a deacon. At my assignment in Philadelphia, I visited an elderly lady who had lost much of her mouth to cancer. She had a permanent feeding tube through which she poured liquid nourishment. When I brought her Holy Communion, I would bring a vial of the Precious Blood which had been consecrated at the morning Mass and which she then poured down the tube, followed by : water for cleansing. Did she receive Christ? Absolutely. Did she receive as much grace as those who received : the Sacred Host? Absolutely. Nevertheless, in 1970, the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship allowed the local conferences of bishops to determined as to what extent, what motives, and what conditions Holy Communion could be received under both species. The General lnstruction had already listed several circumstances where communion under both species was permitted, for example to the bride and groom at a nuptial Mass or the assisting extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharisl (#242\.

ln 1984, the National Conference of Gatholic Bishops in America decided that the policy was left to the local ordinary of each diocese. Each bishop must weigh the spiritual needs of his diocese with any practical concerns. Father William Sanders, Pastor Our Lady of Hope Church, Arlington,Virginia

Deqn?ffi Does calling Mary "the Mother of God"

mean that she came before God? l\ l\

it simply expresses our belief that Mary is truly the Mother of Jesus, *no from the moment of his conception was both human and divine. Catholics believe that God is a Trinity of persons-Father, Son, and Holy Spirit-in one divine nature. We believe that God existed from all eternity T o;

and is the source of all created things. We also believe that, to save us from sin, the second person of the Trinity, the Son, took on a human nature. God became one of us in the mystery of the Incarnation. Luke's Infancy narrative (7:26 -38) tells us that God sent Gabriel to Mary to announce that she would have a child, the Son of God, by the power ofthe

Holy Spirit. Mary consented, and Iesus Christ was conceived in her womb. Later, Mary is greeted by Elizabeth as "the mother of my Lord" (1:43). This greeting expresses the reality that the Lord, the God of the Hebrew Scriptures, is present in Mary's womb. Other passages testify to the same fact. Mary is the Mother of Jesus. fesus is God (John 20:28). Therefore, Mary is i the Mother of God. When we honor Mary as 'the Mother of God," we are professing our belief that Iesus is truly God. We are not saying that Mary came before God but rather that the Son, who existed from all eternity, "became flesh and lived among us" (John 1:14).
