Second Sunday of Advent “A Voice In Your Wilderness” Sts. Peter and Paul Church

December 10, 2017

READINGS Second Sunday Of Advent (B) Is 40:1–5, 9–11 2, Pt 3:8–14, Mk 1:1-8

Most of us are not good at waiting. We want things right away and would rather arrive just on time than stand around uselessly. Few things are as annoying as waiting in a doctor’s of office, a government of office, or being stuck in traffic. Yet waiting can also be an exciting and busy time, like a bride and groom preparing for their wedding. There is no time to waste, since the date is approaching and there is so much to do in order for everything to be prepared perfectly. Advent waiting should be more like this expectant waiting. John the Baptist was sent to point toward Christ and invite the people to their wedding with God. The divine spouse was coming back to his beloved and sent the groom ahead to let everyone know he was coming. Thus John preached preparation, conversion, and setting aside everything that would distract people from getting the heart ready for Jesus. Loving, active planning was as necessary for those who listened to John the Baptist as it is for us. This means going up the mountain and into the desert. Set aside normal distractions and dedicate more time to think about Christ, preparing our hearts and minds for the big day of his arrival. Advent isn’t a nervous time of sitting around and hoping the line goes quickly. It is an active, engaged, and hopeful anticipation of one we eagerly await. Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

First Reading – Isaiah 40: 1-5, 9-11 Isaiah uses words of encouragement to the exiles in Babylon. To everyone and everywhere, in all times and in all places, we are called to prepare ourselves for what God will do. God surely brings comfort for our distress and the assurance that he is there to help us. Second Reading – 2 Peter 3: 8-14 We read in 2 Peter a very stern warning to all. The coming of Christ in judgment will be like the arrival of a thief in the night. God does not want anyone to be lost, but He is waiting impatiently for all to repent. We are to faithfully await God’s coming by living in faithfulness and holiness. Gospel Reading – Mark 1:1-8 John the Baptist called people to repentance and forgiveness of sin. He was a voice crying out in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight His paths.” Next Sunday’s Readings (Cycle B) Third Sunday Of Advent

FAITH FORMATION

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (CCD) At the 6 p.m. Christmas Vigil on December 24, children in Sts. Peter and Paul’s Faith Formation will share The Nativity Story, one of the most powerful symbols of Christmas in the Christian world. The Nativity Story is a depiction of the night of Jesus’ birth. Please join us on this special evening. The Story Behind the Nativity Scene Saint Francis of Assisi created the first nativity scene, or crèche, to promote the true significance of Christmas. He wanted to remind everyone that Baby Jesus was born into a humble, poor, but loving environment. He felt Catholics were missing the message of the Gospel because they were ensnared in materialism. On Christmas Eve in 1223, Saint Francis started what would later become one of the most widespread and familiar Christmas traditions of all time. Outside Greccio, in a cave, he re-created Jesus’ birth and its modest conditions to remind people of how Christianity has never been (and never will be) about material richness. Rather, Christianity revolves around spirituality and worship. Catholicism has nothing to do with earthly wealth, and everything to do with God’s love and the forgiveness of sin through His sacrifice of His only Son. The Common Symbolism of the Nativity Scene Saint Francis created the original nativity scene using live animals and hay in a cave. The presence of animals is an important element of any nativity scene. Saint Francis used an ox and an ass in the original because he wanted to portray the extremely humble conditions under which our Lord and Savior Jesus was born. Most believe the ox represents patience and the people of Israel. The donkey represents Gentiles, humility, and readiness to serve. Brought together, these animals tell the story of Christianity— and, ultimately, the story of a world united under the name of God and his Son, Jesus. The central character in the nativity is Baby Jesus in his manger. Most scenes depict him with open arms inviting us to accept salvation. The Virgin Mary is sometimes larger than other characters and usually wears a red gown representing blood. Her cloak is blue, symbolizing the sky and heaven, conveying she is the link between heaven and earth. The Three Wise Men represent different continents—Africa, Asia, and Europe—and sometimes they are portrayed in different age groups, representing the various life stages. Their gifts are also significant. Gold represents Baby Jesus’ kingship, incense symbolizes His divinity, and myrrh foreshadows His death. The shepherds represent the common man. The most important thing about the nativity scene is its message. Our Heavenly Father sent His own son to earth to be sacrificed for our sins. Those who believe in Him may receive forgiveness and eternity in heaven. Submitted by Yvonne Toma

RCIA: Ever ancient, Ever new What are the steps of RCIA? (part 2 of 2)

The days of Lent are the final Period of Purification and Enlightenment leading up to the Easter Vigil. Lent is a period of preparation marked by prayer, study, and spiritual direction for the Elect, and prayers for them by the parish communities. The Celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation takes place during the Easter Vigil Liturgy on Holy Saturday when the Elect receives the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Now the person is fully initiated into the Catholic Church. As a newly initiated Catholic, they continue their formation and education continue in the Period of the Post Baptismal Catechesis, which is also called Mystagogy. This period continues at least until Pentecost. During the period the newly baptized members reflect on their experiences at the Easter Vigil and continue to learn more about the Scriptures, the Sacraments, and the teachings of the Catholic Church. In addition they reflect on how they will serve Christ and help in the Church's mission and outreach activities. from the USCCB website

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ We ask for your prayers for three individuals who are seeking reception into the Catholic Church, one who is asking for Confirmation and on who is asking for Baptism. They will receive the Rite of Acceptance and the Rite of Welcoming soon. We join together with them in their journey of faith.

Especially before Christmas, I appreciate tirnes of silence at Mass but seldom fincl them. Priests ask ttre congregation to open their missalettes after Communion to recite the daily antiphon, which seems more trouble to locate and say than to simply remain silent. Please advise.

p

efore Mass, it's commendable that silence L)U. observed in the church, sacristy, vesting room, and adiacent areas so that all may "carry out the sacred celebration in a devout and fitting manner" (General Instruction af the Raman Missal,45). During Mass, "Let us pray" is an invitation to observe a moment of silence for the congregation to "place themselves in God's presence and make their personal petition s" (Intraduction ta the Order of Mass,55). Communal silence is also observed within the penitential act for people to recollect themselves, at the end of a reading or the homily for all to meditate briefly on what they've heard, then after Communion to praise and prayto God in their hearts (GIRM 45). In other words, there's a silence that reflects shame before God for our sins, a silence that reflects our need to ponder his word, and a deep silence before God that reflects awe and incapacity for words after receiving the Body of Christ! If there's no singing after Communion, the antiphon 'omay be recited either by the faithful, or by some of them, or by a reader; otherwise, it is recited by the priest himself after he has received Communion and before he distributes Communion to the faithful" (GIRM87). *the celebration can become perfunctory in its Without liturgical silence, haste or burdensome in its unrelieved sound and song" (Introduction 48).
