Sts. Peter and Paul Church

When Jesus healed the ParalYtic He told him: "Your sins are forgiven" (cli Mark 2:1-12). Because of this the disciples must have concluded that his infirmity was sent to him in punishment for his previous sins. Therefore, when they saw the blind man, theY asked Jesus: "Who sinned, this man or his parents?" Jesus exPlained, that "neither he nor his Parents sinned". A belief that affliction was punishment for sins committed was quite common in Christ's day. When Jesus explains that the blind man did not sin, this of course is not to be understood io mean that the blind man was not a sinner. For both he and his parents were sinners; but the meaning is that his blindness was not inflicted as punishment for any sin that he or his parents had committed, but as we see by Christ's healing, this man's blindness was given for the manifestation of the glory of

READINGS

God.

The Pharisees said, "This Man is not from God,

because He does not keep the Sabbath." This seems to be a popular complaint about Jesus throughout the Gospels. ln Saint Mark's Gospel, Jesus answers this complaint with a question: "ls it lawful to do good on the Sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?" After this question the complainers were silent icf Mark 3:4)Jesus says, "l came into this wortd for judgment" but in this same Gospel (12:47) Jesus says, "l did not come to condemn the world but to save the world." On the surface,

these two statements seem contradictory- The meaning, however, is that He has not come to exercise the office of Judge, but He tells them what will be the consequences of His coming, and their refusing to believe in Him and thus remain in their willful blindness. Jesus did not come so that some should remain in darkness while others receive the light of faith. Those who are in darkness or blindness are

never having heard of or about Jesus and His teachings, this kind of blindness might be excused. But they saw Him and knew of the miracles He performed, therefore, it is for this reason that Jesus says to them, "Your sin remains." Thanks be to God for His love and mercy; if we exercise enough humility to acknowledge our blindness and ignorance, and seriously seek a remedy, namely the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we would soon be delivered from our sin. The Pharisees, however, rernained in blindness voluntarily. The Catechism makes the poini that sin is universal; therefore, those who pretend not to need salvation are blind to themselves (cf. CCC 588).

What is Sin?

"Sin is an act contrary to reason. It wounds man's nafure and injures human solidarity" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1872) Mortal vs. Venial What constitutes "mortal sin"? "For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: "Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also cornmitted with full knowledge and deliberate consent" (Catechism, 1 857)^ The Catechism continues (1858): "Grave matter is specified by the Ten Commandments, corresponding to the &nswer of Jesus to the rich young man: 'Do not kill; do not cornmit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother.' The gravity of sins is more or less great Murder is graver than theft. One must also take into account who is wronged: Violence against parents is in itselfgraver than violence against a stranger." In addition, "Mortal sin requires futl knowledge and complete consent. It presupposes knowledge of the sinful character of the act, of its opposition to God's law. lt also implies a consent sufficiently deliberate to be a personal choice. Feigned ignorance and hardness of heart do not diminish, but rather increase, the voluntary character of

sin'(1859). What is "venial sin"? As the Catechism explains, "One commits venial sin when, in a less serious matter, he does not observe the

WwxWM{e, What are social or communal sins? Do I need to confess them? o answer this question properly, we must first make a number of distinctions. First, we are social beings. We act not only as individuals

but also as grolips, and we are capable of sinning each way. Sin is an anaiogous concept with nuances, depending on context. There are original, personai, and sociai sins. There are also both mortal and venial sins. When we sin as individuals, we commit a personal sin. When we sin in a group, we commit a social sin. As with personal sin, some social sins are more serious than others. Societies that enshrine laws promoting abortion, euthanasia, and in many countries, capital punishment are involved in serious social sins. Our degree of culpability in such sins depends on the level of our participation in the group. The key distinction is whether we are actively (formally) or only accidentaily (materially) cooperating in the evil. For example, if you actually voted for a law enshrining one such evil, then you are formally cooperating in the evil. If you voted against it but are paying taxes that fund such practices, then you are only materially cooperating in it. Formal cooperation in a serious offense .: '':. against God's r,rrlll should be confessed. Material cooperation lessens the degree ",::: of blame, sometimes to the point of eliminating it. It is important to examine the nature of the social evil, study the teachings of the Church on the issue, determine your level of participation, and form your conscience accordingly. Dennis
