PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION (B) Acceptance of the Passion

Sts. Peter and Paul Church

March 25, 2018

Mark 11:1–10 or John 12:12–16 Isaiah 50:4–7; Philippians 2:6–11! Mark 14:1—15:47 There is a sharp contrast between Jesus’ and Peter’s acceptance of Christ’s passion. Both are afraid, but while Jesus faces and embraces, Peter hides and denies. We understand Peter’s gloomy darkness, and identify with the confusion and weakness leading to his failure. Like us, he tries to follow Jesus, but at a safe distance. He wants to be close, but not too close. He wants to feel he hasn’t abandoned him, to be there— but remains on the fringe. But following Jesus always leads to moments of truth. Jesus and life have a way of bringing us full circle to face our true selves. Are we in or out? How deep is our love? This time, Peter’s love for Jesus fails. But like us, Jesus looks at him with understanding and gives him a chance to be honest, repent, and follow him once again. Jesus’ acceptance of his passion is our example. First, he suffers freely. He’s not being forced into a fate he cannot escape. As a result, he is calm, selfpossessed, in control of his heart, and patient. Second, he suffers peacefully without resentment. He isn’t constantly recriminating against Judas, Peter, or John during his trial or flagellation. He doesn’t seek blame or payback. Not only is he not bitter or resentful, but he is full of compassion and focused on others: on the elderly women, his Mother, John the Apostle, forgiving his tormentors, and leading the good thief to heaven. Let’s enter this holiest week following our Redeemer and imitating his example. —Fr. Mark Haydu, LC © 2018 Liguori Publications, Liguori, MO 63057-9999. Printed in USA. First Reading: Isaiah 59: 4-7 Whereas Judah in Isaiah is defined by her rebellion, the servant is defined by his obedience. He did not turn backward but he moved forward with the confidence of Yahweh, his sustainer and teacher. Second Reading: Philippians 2: 6-11 Paul envisions the life of the community being formed by the mind of Christ – by a spirit of humility and loving service to one another rather than competition and grasping for power and control. Gospel Reading: Mark 14: 1 – 15: 47 Why did Jesus die according to Mark? Because of the failings of his closed followers. Jesus betrayed him. Peter denied him. And the inner circle of disciples fell asleep when he needed them. But the full truth is that Jesus died because his message provoked powerful enemies.

FAITH FORMATION Youth & Young Adults John 17:26 I made known to them thy name, and I will make it known, that the love with which thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

ʻAnoʻai Kākou, Bible Study As we approach the end of lent, the readings remind us of what Jesus prepared his entire life for. It bring to light the mystery of the holy Trinity, and calls to reflect on our relationship with God, with each other, and even with ourselves. Come join us as we continue to have the Thursday Young Adult Bible studies during Lent. The passages we go over are inspired from the following day's Gospel reading (the calendar is available on usccb.org).

Project Period. St. Don’s young adult ministry is mostly young women. We totally understand the difficulties associated with periods. All women have the right to live their life with dignity regardless of rich or poor. Young adults are doing this project during Lent for the emergency shelters serving our area. We are collecting menstrual hygiene products so that we can help some of the homeless women in need, because there shouldn’t be a question of “Food or Sanitary napkin?”

Currently, we are looking for donations of the following items: 1. Heavy flow overnight sanitary pads 2. Regular flow sanitary pads 3. Pantiliners Please deposit the items in the bins at the church with the label Period Project. Last date for donations is March 26th (Monday). Due to hygiene reasons we do not accept opened napkins. Thank you so much for your understanding. Let’s bring change in the life of others, even if the least way possible.

Volunteer Opportunities We continue to provide free tutoring to those trying to learn English or get their GED. Every second Saturday of the month we help to clean the churchAs the young adults ministry of Sts. Peter & Paul, inspired by St. Don Bosco, we wish to volunteer, learn, reflect, and be happy. Servite Domine in laetitia (Serve God cheerfully). Being part of this group, in this phase of our journey in life, will allow us to help each other to grow spiritually, intellectually and physically. If you have any interest, questions, comments, ideas, etc. please e-mail us at trivialFyr@gmail.com or txt 305-898-0378. Hope to see everyone soon! Aloha, Amala & Sunu

RCIA: EVER ANCIENCT, EVER NEW Who will join our parish family this Easter? Those who will enter through the sacraments into our Catholic faith at the Easter Vigil are: Daniel Pham and Glenda James (who will be baptized, Confirmed and received First Eucharist); Kiran Polk, Nancy Welliver and Dee Willis (who will be received into the Catholic Faith, Confirmed and First Eucharist) and Xyann Aiseu who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. The RCIA cathechists and team offer our thanks to all those present for the Masses for these past few months and especially for the past four Sundays and our parish community as a whole, who prayed for and with our candidates during the RCIA Penitential Rite, and our elect during the RCIA Scrutinies. Please continue to pray for our elect and candidates as they enter their final week of preparation for the sacraments of initiation.

What is next for those who enter the Catholic Church this Easter? We enter into the fourth period of the RCIA process, which is the neophyte year. All who are baptized and received into full communion are called neophytes in this period, until the anniversary of their initiation next Easter. The final period of regular weekly formation extends through the Easter season, the seven weeks from Easter to Pentecost. This post-baptismal catechesis is called mystagogy. It is a time for deepening the Christian experience, especially in appreciation for the sacramental life, for spiritual growth, and for entering more fully into the life and unity of the Catholic community. We as a parish community pledge to help them grow and mature in the Christian life and to develop a genuine Catholic world view.

We will also begin a new cycle of inquiry the week after Pentecost, Wednesday, May 23 at 6:00 p.m. in the Blue room.

Deqn?qd/Te, Was the Mother of Jesus at the foot of the cross?

f

n |ohn's Gospel the Mother of Jesus, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of and Mary Magdalene stood "by the cross" (19:25). Moreover, ]esus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing by and spoke to them (19.26-27).

lCloprr,

In Mark's Gospel, among "the many other women" watching the crucifixion from a distance were "Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of f oses, and Salome" (15:40). Luke simply records that "all his acquaintances stood at a distance, including the women who had followed him from Galilee and saw these events" (23:.49). But he mentions three women by name who visited the tomb: Mary Magdalene, |oanna, and Mary the mother of lames (24:10). Nlatthew also has "many women" looking on from a distance. Among them are "Nlary Nlagdalene and Mary the mother of Iames and |oseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons" (27:56). Only |ohn records the presence of Jesus' mother and "Mary the lvife of Clopas," who is believed to differ from Mary, the mother of James the younger and |oses, and Mary, the mother of James and foseph. Mary Magdalene is cited in all four Gospels. "By the cross" or "at a distance" may indicate the location allowed for spectators at a crucifixion. However, it is possible that at some point they were permitted to approach the foot of the cross, as depicted sometimes in artworks. Fr. Byron Miller, CSsR Sundaybu Iletin@Liguori.org
