We may not be able to find out what may lie behind that door but we betieve there is a futtness of [ife and Crace. BAPTISM OF THE LORD Renewal By The Holy Spirit Sts. Peter and Paul Church

January 13, 2019

GOOD NEWS! We have all received baptism, but why don’t the amazing fruits and graces received then always show themselves powerfully in our lives? Titus tells us what has already happened for us in baptism. We were saved “through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the holy Spirit” (3:5). Yet this renewal accomplished by the Spirit needs to be fully embraced by us for it to reach its potential. We know we have been renewed, but how do we keep renewing? This happens by prayerful contact with the Holy Spirit. In Titus, Spirit is capitalized because it’s the Spirit of God. Renewal by the Holy Spirit is a renewal in which God, not man, is the principal protagonist. “Behold, I” (not you) “make all things new” (Revelation 21:5). We often think that to be renewed and grow, we have to do something. God tells us it is something he does. “I, the Lord, make you holy” (Leviticus 20:8). We have to give him back the power he already has. Or better yet, we need to recognize God’s power and let him use it in us. A revolution needs to happen in our minds and hearts where we recognize that without the Holy Spirit we can do nothing. So ask the Holy Spirit to come upon you in a real baptism of fire. Then all those baptismal gifts will spark into a flame and help you set the world ablaze with his love! — Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

For Reflection: When was the last time I prayed to the Holy Spirit? He is a real divine person; talk to him. Am I courageous enough to ask the Holy Spirit to come down and touch my soul with his fire? © 2019 Liguori Publications, Liguori, MO 63057-9999. Printed in U.S.A. Reading I - Isaiah 40:1—5, 9—11 The prophet Isaiah gives us a timeless vision of God’s promised redemption. Jerusalem is comforted, her warfare is ended, and her iniquity is pardoned. The world of nature will be transformed, and the coming One will feed and care for the people like a shepherd. This is the peace and joy that awaits the faithful.

Reading II - Titus 2:11--14; 3:4--7 St. Paul the apostle writes to Titus of the ultimate triumph of the saving power that is revealed in Jesus Christ. Christ gave himself to redeem us and to purify us for his use. In Christ we have been justified by grace and through faith, and have become heirs of eternal life.

Reading III - Luke 3:15—16, 21—22 Great movements tend to begin with some kind of initiation or commissioning. We do not know how much Jesus knew about his mission, but by submitting to baptism he was dedicating himself to fulfill his Godgiven vocation. He would face a world of darkness and light, persecution and promise, sorrow and joy. But he would triumph in the end.

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS Second Sunday in Ordinary Time 1st Reading– Isaiah 62:1—5 2nd Reading – 1 Corinthians 12:4—11 Gospel - John 2:1—11

JANUARY Prayer Intentions from

Pope Francis Evangelization – Young

People

That young people, especially in Latin America, follow the example of Mary and respond to the call of the Lord to communicate the joy of the Gospel to the world.

Have you met the Desert Fathers? St. Anthony, Feast Day on January 17 Anthony "the Great", the "Father of Monks", ranks with those saints whose life exercised a profound influence upon succeeding generations. He was born in Middle Egypt (about 250) of distinguished parents. After their untimely deaths, he dedicated himself wholly to acts of mortification. One day while in church he heard the words of the Gospel: "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give it to the poor" (Matt. 19:21). It seemed as if Christ had spoken to him personally, giving a command he must obey. Without delay he sold his property, gave the proceeds to the poor, and went into the desert (about 270). When overcome by fatigue, his bed was the hard ground. He fasted rigorously, ate only bread and salt, and drank only water. Nor would he take food before sundown; at times he passed two days without any nourishment. Often, too, he spent whole nights in prayer. The saint suffered repeatedly from diabolical attacks, but these merely made him more steadfast in virtue. He would encourage his disciples in their struggle with the devil with such words: "Believe me; the devil fears the vigils of pious souls, and their fastings, their voluntary poverty, their loving compassion, their humility, but most of all their ardent love of Christ our Lord. As soon as he sees the sign of the Cross, he flees in terror." He died in 356 on Mount Kolzin by the Red Sea, 105 years old. A year later his friend, the fearless bishop and confessor St. Athanasius, wrote his biography, which for centuries became the classic handbook of ascetics. As seen by St. Anthony, the purpose of asceticism is not to destroy the body but to bring it into subjection, re-establishing man's original harmonious integrity, his true God-given nature. My fiancde was baptized in the Lutheran Church. If she becomes Catholic, will she be baptized again? A .f\

person can be validly baptized only once, whether in or out of the Catholic Church. Catholics believe three things are necessary for a baptism: flrst, baplizing in the name of the Father, the Son, and the valid Holy Spirit; second, flowing water; and third, the intention of the "minister" to baptize using the form (words of the

Trinitarian formula) and matter (flowing water) needed for a

valid baptism. Orthodox and most Protestant baptisms are recognized by the Catholic Church. However, baptisms performed by Christian communities that don't believe in the Trinity-Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons, for example-are not recognized by the Catholic Church as valid. These communities may use the same matter (flowing water), but they don't have the same form (Trinitarian formula) or intention in their baptism. If your fiancde decides to become Catholic, she will need to attend Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) classes, make her first Communion and reconciliation, and be confirmed, but she has already been validly baptized and will not need to be baptized again.
