0n this special weekend, the Fourth Sunday of Easter, throughout the world we are asked to pray for those whom are being catted and already responded to the ca[[ to priesthood and retigious [ife. Sometime we forget that those who have answered the catl need our prayers as wetl as encouragement and support as
a
morning breeze, refreshing and at[ embracing. lt was then I was reminded of the promise I had made to Cod.
As Pope Francis spoke of vocations as fottows, "The vocation is truty a treasure that Cod places in the hearts of some men, chosen by Him and catted to fottow Him in this special state of [ife." fr-ifranli

Her words to me became more than a homity but a life long commitment to Cod's catt. I am convinced as Jesus said, "lt was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that wit[ remain." (Jn 1s:16a) Turning bacl< to the beginning of alt of this and recalting the time when my older brother and I fted the Communist Vietnam on a smat[ fishing boat, I am even more convinced now of Cod's catt. I was a teenager when we left behind the home we grew up in and atl the securities of tife. During this escape, a Iifechanging event caused me to turn to God. Packed in a fishing boat with 34 peopte we were tossed about in the tumutus Pacific Ocean with no hope of survivat. When life is at the end of a rope, I started bargaining. "0h God," I prayed "You must be out there ... if you give me Iife again, then mine is yours."

Fourth Sunday Of Easter The Good Shepherd
Sts. Peter and Paul Church
April 22, 2018
A cts 4:8–12; 1 John 3:1–2; John 10:11 –18 (See artwork on front cover)
At the center of his painting Hands of the Crucified, Renato Guttuso (1912-1987) places the piercing reality of pain represented by the hand of Jesus. The dark reds, blacks, and blues give way to the bright- ness of the oranges, yellows, and whites. This choice of palate is purposeful. Death is depicted with the same palate as a sunset, when darkness closes in on the light. But then night gives way to the colors of the sunrise when new life springs forth. The brutal darkness that leads to his death is replaced by the light-giving act of the love of God. The Good Shepherd also shows the beauty of this love-filled sacrifice. This is why the Father loves Jesus; because he lays down his life for us. He has the power to do so and does it freely. This is because the Shepherd’s mission and vocation is centered on the good of the sheep. They are the center of his daily cares and concerns. Jesus tells us that you and I are the utter focus of his heart and life. You are worth it. It is a beautiful thing to be loved by someone. Imagine if this someone is God himself. As modern as Guttuso’s painting looks, the artist honors a traditional symbol. Byzantine art often depicted the blood from Jesus’ side falling into a chalice to connect the passion of Jesus with the Eucharistic sacrifice. The artist does the same by showing the blood falling into a simple chalice with a host at its center. —Fr. Mark Haydu, LC © 2018 Liguori Publications, Liguori, MO 63057-9999. Printed in USA. First Reading - Acts 4: 8-12 Peter, being filled with the Holy Spirit, would have everyone understand that the miracle had been done in the name of Jesus, the Messiah. We also learn in this passage that God will overrule the devices and plans of wicked men to accomplish His own purposes.
Second Reading - I John 3: 1-2 The words here are words of encouragement to a community that is troubled by schism. One of the primary aims of 1 John is to persuade the remaining community members that they need to hold on to their confession because they have experienced its truth.
Gospel Reading - John 10: 11-18 The mutuality of knowledge between the Father and the Son is mirrored in the relationship between the shepherd and the sheep. Now that relationship is further defined as one of love.

Exciting News! On Pentecost Sunday, just 4 weeks away, our 2 grade children will receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist. In our first bulletin article, we outlined how they were preparing for Reconciliation. Here’s a glimpse at what they’re doing to prepare for Confirmation and First Eucharist. ♥ I Belong to a Loving Community – children relate their baptism with being a member of the Catholic Church and their belief in Jesus. ♥ I Prepare for Confirmation – children learn that the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit are gifts to be shared with others. ♥ What Happens in Confirmation – children are exposed to the laying of hands and anointing with sacred chrism. ♥ Our Community Remembers Jesus – children are taught that every Sunday is Jesus’ special day. We listen to a story about Jesus and share the Body and Blood of Christ as a community of believers. ♥ Jesus Gathers People Together – children explore how eating together is a way of making friends. ♥ Jesus’ Special Supper – children recall the Last Supper Jesus shared with his disciples and our commitment to do as he asked us to do. ♥ Our Community Shares a Meal – children discover the Liturgy of the Eucharist has three parts. As parents and guardians you are the number one influence on your child’s faith. What you do to nurture faith and love for God at home and at the parish are vitally important. You are not alone in your responsibility. Your faith community at Sts. Peter and Paul Church is here to support you and thrilled to be sharing in this exciting time of your child’s faith journey. A journey that began at Baptism will continue through the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation, and First Eucharist. Ms. Bernie Nana Linda

AROUND THE PARISH AND THE DIOCESE
April 22nd and 29th After the 9 am and 11 am Masses
Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church greatly cares for the health, safety, and welfare of all of its parishioners and guests at all times.
In this season of Easter when the Risen Christ brings healing and peace to the frightened disciples we have an opportunity to help Teresa Dillon and her family.
We, thus, humbly ask that all our parishioners and guests kokua and exercise reasonable caution and care when entering and/or exiting church grounds; including, but not limited to, using marked cross-walks (and traffic signals when available) in crossing Kaheka Street to the east of our church property.
The Western Association of the Order of Malta invited, Teresa Dillion and her family on a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Lourdes in Lourdes, France. Teresa Dillon is a Sts. Peter and Paul parishioner who attends the Sunday 11 AM Mass and participates through sign language. She received her First Holy Communion last year. By purchasing a baked good or making a donation, this will help Teresa in the Spiritual Journey with the Order of Malta to Lourdes. Proceeds will provide much needed funds for round trip airfare to Los Angeles.
Please kindly remember that we all strive to be good citizens in our lives outside of church, and that the fine for the violation of jaywalking is $130. The church also asks our driving parishioners and guests to exercise caution and good judgement in entering and exiting the church's parking lots in relation to on-coming traffic and/or pedestrians. Thank you for your continued understanding and cooperation in these important matters. After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken,
and they were filled with the HOLY SPIRIT and spoke the word of GOD bodly. Acts 4:31

Every time I pick up a Catholic magazine,I read articles about taking care of our environment. Shouldn't Christians be more concerned with the big problems in the world-such as war, hunger, and sickness? rFhe
world's big problems as you rlame them are not as disconnected I to the environment as they seem. The depletion of natural resources displaces people, and their forced migration can create social conflict. Droughts impact some of the estimated 800 million undernourished people globally. Climate affects certain diseases and their transmission. In his encyclical Laudato si', Pope Francis wrote, "The deterioration of the environment and of society affects the most vulnerable people on the planet" (fS 4B). He adds that a solution to the crisis demands an approach that is both social and environmental in "combating poverty, restoring dignity to the excluded, and at the same time, protecting nature" (IS 139). Thus, we can't feed the hungry or visit the ill, then dump toxins on the ground and claim we love God's creation. We can't defend the unborn and exploit the environment upon which all life depends. Love demands that we act with care toward all creation, since we cannot sever creation from the Creator. If we respect the earth, we'll find it easy to revere the war-torn, the hungry, and the

sick.
Acts 13:44-52 In 14:7-14
Moreover, Catholic print and electronic media must help call attention to environmental concerns because they involve our Christian duty to act upon the physical world in a way that respects its relationship to God. The Redemptorists I Sundaybulletin@Liguori.org

nanru Popn ftimcis,
The grave environmental crisis facing our world demands an
ever greater sensitivity to the relationship between human beings and nature. We have a responsibility to pass on the beauty of nature in its integrity to future generations, and an obligation to exercise a just stewardship of the gifts we have received. to Kenya, November 25,2015
