Yes, it's only Labor Day, but stores are already in full Halloween mode with plenty of costumes and candy on display. I grew up in St. Louis, where tradition requires costumed children to tell a joke at each door on Halloween before receiving the candy "treat." As children, we'd pore over joke books for a month to discern the highest-quality riddle to spring on the neighbors. I now realize this tradition is unique to St. Louis (and Des Moines). ln most locales you don't have to do anythingiust say "trick or trea!" and you get free, undeserved candy. What? Free candy for no work? The injustice! I tease that St. Louis has it right-you ought to have lo earn your Snickers and Starbursts. Thank goodness God doesn't follow St. Louis in his distribution of gifts. What if we were required to perform a song and dance of deservedness to receive God's abundant generosity? We're undeserving of God's extraordinary goodness, yet he showers us with his grace. So we ought to hear, with humble hearts, the same challenge from today's gospel. We can be stingy with our money, our time, our patience*seeking first to determine whether the recipient is deserving, has done something for us lately, will use our gifts well. What if God applied those same standards to us? Would we be worthy? I doubt it. Jesus challenges us to be generous-especially to those who are undeserving, cannot repay US, and Seem Unworthy of our love and time. We are those people in God's eyes, yet God gives without need of return. What Janel Eske r su ndaybu lletin @ liguori.org willwe do?

WHAT'S lruHAT continued

Parish Scripture Group - Currently we have only 2 groups. Both meet Wednesdays, morning and evening. Each week the Scripture for the upcoming Sunday is read and examined. Ouestions about faith are always welcome. lf you would like to help start another group that meets on another day, please see Father Khanh or Frank Jordan. YOUTH FAITH FORMATION (YFF) - Educating our youth in Liturgy, Church Doctrine, History, Scripture, Morality and Social Justice is an important part of our Youth Formation. We are working toward an ongoing formation and not allowing Confirmation to be an end to the processes, but a beginning. Our youth this year blossomed in their service to the parish in their participation with the Vigil Liturgies, the Parish Feast, Christmas, Epiphany, Stations of the Cross. Our Youth Leaders need a tremendous amount of time and energy to keep up with our newest leaders of the church. Mahalo to Geno & Christiana Astarita who put in a lot of time and energy this past year to help with the PSG

received many complaints about that answer. When I wrote it, I was thinking of a Baptist church in a town where I used to be pastor. They invited young people from our parish to a movie-tnd-pizza plry. After the purty, the pastor attacked the Catholic Church, saying the pope was the anti-Christ and that praying to the crucifix was idol worship. The Catholic teens were so upset that I told them not to go to activities at that church anymore. I made nvo mistakes in that column: First, in trying to be briee I left out details you needed to understand my point. Second, I painted all Protestants with the same brush. Most Protestants are faithful believers who respect the Catholic faith. If the pastor at that Baptist church had simply talked about the Baptist faith in positive terms and hadn't attacked Catholicism, I'd have no problem with our young people attending their parties. '[/hen parents, teachers, and priests do a So we agree: good job of teaching our children about their Catholic faith, we prepare them to withstand any challenge to it. F r. P atrick
