that suggested, "Be first to say you're sorry." The article acknowledged that this can be quite difficult when you feel strongly that your spouse is wrong. But the article claims (and l've found this to be true) that saying you're sorry defuses a fight remarkably quickly. lt's hard to continue battling when the other person has made the first move toward I recently read an article about marriage

reconciliation. A similar dynamic exists between God and us. God needn't apologize to us, but when we're distanced from God because of our sin, he always makes the first move in reconciliation. Before we even realize we're disconnected from the Lord, he's reaching out with healing mercy. The story of Zacchaeus in today's Gospel beautifully illustrates this truth. Zacchaeus, a sinner, wants to see Jesus, but he's practically hidden in the tree. Jesus reaches out to him, inviting himself into Zacchaeus's home and, ultimately, his life. Zacchaeus responds with repentance and reparations for his wrongs, and his life istransformed. Why is God this generous with mercy? Today's reading from Wisdom tells us, "For you love all things that are and loathe nothing that you have made; for you would not fashion what you hate." ln shorthand, "God doesn't make junk." Each of us is beloved by God no matter how sinful, broken, or distant we become. The spirit of God is still alive within us even when it seems like that light went out years ago. And that's what God reaches out to in reconciliation. No one is beyond the profound, powerful, all-encompassing love of our God. Janel Esker sundaybulletin@liguori.org

The Feast of Christ the King falls at the end of November. We are reminded in the gospels of Jesus who is also our kind Shepherd who cares for the sick and the weak among us. Those who may receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick are as follows according to Canon Law (988, roo5): A baptized Catholic who has reached the age of reason and begun to be in danger from illness or the infirmities of age, or have become sick again or undergone further crisis. Mahalo to Peter Cruz for the presentation on the Saints. We pray his knowledge of our saints and his love for them might inspire us to imitate them and to fall more in love with Jesus. Thank you for your interest. TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE RALLY-Mahalo to the z5 parishioners who came out to support the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Your presence was a voice for families and children to come. We can only pray for our government leaders to fear God and to act with wisdom and in the best interest of all.

You did the right thing. The Church's Book of Blessings gsves guidelines for a variefy of blessings, some of which may be gwen by laypeople (see p. >orviii). For e>rample, parents may bless their children. Baptized laypeople who carry out functions on behalf of the Church may also give blessings: Catechists may bless their students, and eucharistic ministers

& & ,o &

Laypeople may give various other blessings, including blessing the sick, food, a new home, seeds at planting time, and throats on the feast of St. Blaise. A layperson may distribute ashes on Ash Wednesday, though the actual blessing of the ashes is reserved for the clergy. AIso reserved for the ordained are blessinp of liturgical vessels, parishioners entering ministry as readers, altar servers, ministers of holy Communion, or musicians. Blessings of the cathedta (the bishop's chair in the catlredral church) and the consecration of the sacred chrism ate reserved for bishops. Ifyou're trained to minister in the hospital and are there with the approval of your pastor and the hospital's pastoral team, you can give blessings. The Book of Blessings has terts to guide your words. F r. John
