GOOD NEWS r:r-u / Eph r.:r7-23 / Mt l8:r5-zo . Acts r::.2-+4 / r Pt 4:e3-a6 / John r.7:r-+ea My favorite banner for the Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord shows a pair of running shoes, laces askew, empty of the feet that had worn them, as though their owner had suddenly realized he had somewhere else to be. I don't think Jesus' ascension happened exactly that way, but there was something poignant about the empty shoes. They reminded me of Acts
makeshift memorials for those who die suddenly or tragically in public areas. Think of the gathering of items that adorned the rubble of the twin towers after 9/m or the flowers, medals, and other items that are left in front of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The disciples might have been tempted to leave such items in the place where Jesus left them. They stared into the sky until someone told them Jesus would come back. Then they returned to Jerusalem. We leave memorials because we don't know what else to do. lt's a way of doing somethingfrl the face of tragic and senseless death. By contrast, the disciples (and all who follow Christ) were given very clear instructions: "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit." The memorial to the death and resurrection of Christ is not a pair of shoesit is our action. lt is the preaching of the Good News by word and deed. lt is witnessing to faith in someone who lives, not in someone who has died. The tennis shoes on that banner were not mourning one who left. They were waiting for someone to putthem on and keep going. MARY KATHARINE DEELEY sundaybulletin@ liguori.orgD

Your neighbor is probably referring to John 3:7, when Jesus told Nicodemus, "You must be born anew." Jesus is talking about a spiritual r$irth; we must have a spiritual birth in order to be saved. As you have correctly noted, Catholics believe this happens at baptism. In John 3:5, Jesus says,'tIo one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit." We me saved by the waters of baptism. But for Catholics, it's not merely a one-time event. We continue to accept or reject the

Your neighbor used the words 'lersonal saYior." Catholic Christians go even deeper through the sacrarnents. We develop and nurture a very personal relationship with Jesus by regularly receiving the Eucharist. In the sacrarnent of reconciliation, we admit we have sinned and ask Jesus to forgive us. And in the sacrament of confirmation, our relationship is "sealed" with the gift ofthe Spirit. Many Catholics also celebrate the sacrament of marriage. The couple's personal relationship with Jesus is deepened through the love the couple shares. So tell your neighbor you are indeed saved by Jesus. And because you are saved, you deepen that relationship with Jesus by living a sacramental life. FR. PAT RIC K KEYES,
