GOOD NEWS ze:4Q I Philippians z:6-er IJohn 3:e3-r7 Julian of Norwich (born in :342, died after 1416), who wrote so wonderfully about hervisions of God, once said that we have our beginning in God's love. From that love we are created, and in that love we live until we are united with God at the end. l've always loved the image of a love that wants to bear fruit in creationthat wants to create me and all the people of the world. Why should it be any surprise, then, that in his love, God would give us himself in Jesus Christ to redeem us all and give us eternal life? lt shouldnt yet many of us walk around unable to believe that someone might love us enough to give his life for us. Today is an invitation to stop and ask, "What if I believed wholeheartedly the words of the gospel today? What if I knew to the core of my being that I was loved?" I think we might carry ourselves a little differently; we might approach people more openly; we might dare even to love those we thought we couldn't. We get occasional glimpses of love: husbands and wives, parents and children, the deep love of a friend who will drop everything to help us. God's love is all of that and more. For our sake, God emptied himself to become one of us and, at the last, he gave himself for us that we might live more fully than we ever thought possible. Let us know and believe God's love, which created us, redeemed us, and holds us still untilthat great day we are united with him forever in heaven. Numbers

September zest is set aside by the U.S. Bishops as the day we commission and remember to pray for our Catechists, students and families. Catechesis comes from the Latin and Greek to teach by word of mouth, it has it's origins in the word echo. To catechize is to pass on what we have learned. That's why we can't do it just by the internet or video, but person to person. Please pray for
ourteachers and students as they begin a newyear. NertWeek:

Jesus understood his mission to be sacrificing his own life "as a ransom for many''(Matthew 20:28). His fidelity to that mission was even at the cost of death. However, saymg Jesus' death was payment for our sins doesn't mean that a vengeful God was appeased by the slaughter of his own innocent son. Rather, we are redeemed because of the mutual love between Father and Son, as well as the love Christ had for us all when he offered his life. "It is love 'to the end'[see John 13:l] that confers on Christ's sacrifice its value as redemption and reparation, as atonement and satisfaction" (CatedrisnoftheCaftdicchurdL 616). It is in this sense that Jesus' death was a payment-not one to be exacted-but a unique sacrifice 'that completes and surpasses all other sacrifices," when 'the Father handed his Son over to sinners in order to reconcile us with himself," and the Son of God freely and lovingly offered his human life to his Father "in repmation for our disobedience" (CCC 614). Christ obore our sins in his body upon the cross....By his wounds you have been healed" (1 Peter 2:24). Viewed in light of the resurrection, Christ's death has meaning in eternal life's triumph over sin. FR. BYRO N M ILLER, C SsR zun daybu lletin @ liguori. org
