In the campus Church where I work, more people show up on Ash Wednesday than on any other day. Practicing Catholics, Catholics who are a little (or a lot) out of practice, and non-Catholics who sense the need for a period of discipline stream through the doors to remember that they are dust and into dust they shall return. With a cross smudged on their foreheads, they go out, sensing that this defined six-week block we call Lent is a real chance to change course and renew their lives. Many of them return each sunday to hear ancient stories and try to live into the good intentions symbolized by the ashes. Ash Wednesday creates a framework for conversion, and the First Sunday of Lent tells us why we need it. The Genesis story is an explanation for the brokenness of the world that comes not from God's error in creation, but from our desire to be God and control our own destiny. The creature cannot be the creator. we cannot know fully what God knows. For Adam and Eve, such knowledge is power, and they aren't content with what God has given them. In the deseft, Jesus is also tempted to show his power and take control from his Father. He could refuse to subject himself to God's will. He could make bread and force God to care for him. Even more, he could give power over to one who is not God. lnstead, Jesus gives his life over to God. With his grace, we can do the same. Where are you being tempted to push God aside and take control? Ma ry Katharine Deeley s undayb ulletin @ li guori.

Rite of Election
The Rite of Election will be held at the Cathedral at 2:oo p.m. on Sunday. The Catechumens will be sent from the 9:3o a.rn. Mass. This is one of the "hinge" rites in the RCIA process. We know a lot about elections. We hear candidates promoting themselves, but not much testimony from others. Election in the Church is a little different. lt is God who chooses and it is through the witness of others that we know a person is chosen by God. Election begins with God and is witnessed by the Church. To be elected means to be chosen by God and we see God's influence in their lives, evidence of God's continued presence in our world. Our community sends them to the Bishop, they sign their names in the Book of the Elect and the Bishop declares them to join the ranks of the Elect.

LIVING IN LOVE RETREAT March
15-16,2014
Married couples invited to give themselves a fantastic Lenten resolution! Treat your spouse to a delightful experience designed to put the fun and romance back into marriage! This retreat workshop affirms, energizes, and frees husbands and wives to live in love the way they always dreamed they would. Living in Love offers liberating insight from Pope John Paul ll's Theology of the Body into how differently men and women prefer to achieve intimacy and helps couples get in touch with the resources that draw them to each other and fuel their passion. The workshop consists of a series of lively, inspirational presentations, followed by questions for reflection, private couple time, and a brief communal prayer. There is no large group discussion or open sharing on the topics. Saturday's time schedule is 8:ooAM - 9:ooPM and includes a lovely, romantic candlelight dinner. Sunday ends by 3:ooPM and includes Mass. Cost is still just sr5o.oo per couple. Scholarships are available and no one has ever been denied access to the weekend because of cost. (we have three couples so far.) For more information please call Ed & Betty Coda at 8o8-839-o837 or email them at codafam@aol.com. Also, you can visit www.livinginlove.org to register.

Catholics aged 74 and up are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday' To abstain means refraining from eating beef veal, pork, or poultry at least, although eggs, milk products, or meat broths or condiments made from animal fat are OK. The consumption of fish and shellfish is permitted. However, it should always be kept in mind that abstinence is meant to be penitential practice, not exchanging one delicary for another.

EASTER DUTY All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving communiofl at least once a year. This precepr is to be fulfilled during the Easter Season unless it is fulfilled, for a just cause, at some other time during the year. This period is exended to
include all the weeks of Lent and the Easter Season, and extending beyond to Trinity Sunday (]une 15).
LENTEN PRACTICES The faithful are encouraged during Lent to attend daily Mass, receive Holy Communion, participate in penance services, and receive sacramental absolution; to take part in public and private exercises of piety, give generously to works of religion and charity, perform acts of kindness toward the sick, aged and the poor; to practice voluntary self-denial, especially regarding food, drink and worldly amusements; and to pray more fervently, particularly for the intentions of the Holy Father.
