A quick glance at the lnternet or magazine rack will reveal multitudes of

personality quizzes.

Sunday, January 5: 7:15 a.m. Mass: SoLEMNITY

Some actually help us understand why we do things and interact with People the way we do; many just make us laugh. From the ridiculous ("if you were a dog, you would be a cocker spaniel") to the sometimes uncomfortably true ("you are an introver[ who really likes to plan things"), these human-made signs can point us in particular directions that may or may not be helpful.

But the God of mystery can and does use the signs we look at to reveal his presence and call us to discipleship. To the Magi who looked at the heavens, God's sign was a star. To people who had lived for so long in dark times, God revealed himself as light and truth. To those who understood that their faith in God could strengthen them when times were rough and exhort them when all was well, God presented himself as one of them, fully human and fully divine, the very essence of love. We look in many places and faces for evidence of God, but we get distracted and often miss what we're looking for. God uses whatever is necessarypersonality quizzes, magazines, plans, books, nature, and other people to get us moving in the right direction. "We saw his star," said the Magi.

CCD Jan 5 Epiphany celebration Y${J"ri-l Epiphany Celebration Parish Scripture Croups

Wed. January Bth R.C.I.A. January 7th 6:3o p.m.

CELETRAT}GN iiUViTATIO N f rc rr"r Vel rna =PIFHANY The feast of manifestation, or Epiphany, is traditionally celebrated the rzth day after Christmas, January 6th. Our celebration will be on Sunday, 5 January zor4 with our monthly Family Mass and a fellowship to follow. Epiphany is Greek for "to manifest" or "to show ". The Feast of the Epiphany marks the first manifestation of the birth of Christ to the Gentiles. The Three Kings - Melchor, Gaspar, and Balthazar - had come from the East in search of the Christ child. The Three Kings, also known as the Magi or the Wise Men, brought with them gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh - gold signifying that Jesus is King; frankincense, the symbol of prayer, signifying that Jesus is the Son of God, and myrrh, which.is used to anoint the dead, signifying that Jesus would die for the salvation of all. We look forward to seeing you all. There will lots of wonderful food and a terrific program. Our Youth have been working hard to put on a great

celebration!

How is TwelfthNtsht related to Christmas?

Thrclfth Night is enother name for the Epiphany, which traditionally occurred onJanuary 6, the twelfth day after Christmas. Since the 1980s, lJnited States Catholics have celebrated the Epiphany on the first Sunday after January 1, which is why we're celebrating it today instead of tomorrow. Liturgical celebrations are distinguished as solemnities, feasts, and memo-rials according to their importance. The two greatest solemnities, Easter and Christmas, continue for an octave (eight days). Since the octave of Christmas runs from December 25 throughJanuary 1 (the solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God), it's not affected by the transfer ofthe Epiphany celebration. Christmas is the great gift-giving day in the U.S. In other cultures-for example, the Latino community-the anticipation and excitement of gift-giving are saved for Epiphany, the day the Magi brought their gifts toJesus.

and God gave us by sending his Son.

Epiphany, on the other hand, is made for celebration, gift-giving, going all out. Perhaps someday we can return to the traditions of Epiphany and restore Christmas as a day of rejoicing and worship.
