much to enjoy Like many families, we planted a garden in the backyard as the flowers as to teach our daughlers where food comes fr6m' Cucumber soil. We watched seeds, tomatoes, green beans, and carrots went into the we for weeds and bugs. There wasn't a lot we could do with squirrels' And grow' plucked the few pieces of produce our clay-like soil allowed to or ln the process, I discovered two things: r) I don't have the patience utmost the I have passion for gardening that some of my friends do, and z) our food' Every supply respect for those who tend the fields and flocks that rejoices in what seed they plant expresses their hope in harvest. The farmer happens when seed, eafth, and water come together' with his Word' We So it is with God, who plants us on this earth and fills us through whom are God's expression of hope for the world. We are the ones that God can show forth his love to all. But the parable makes it clear lf whatever ground is in our hearts and souls strongly affects the outcome' of God's we are opJn, ready, and waiting, we will show forth the rich harvest will be yield grace and righteousness. lf our hearts are rocky or thorny, the the iike the handful of beans in my backyard-or it may be nothing, and world will not know God through us' I was' He will But we are fortunate. God is a far more patient gardener than we are continue to work the soil of our hearts and minds so that when shown in planted, we may give a hundred times over the love that God has Mary Katha rine Deeley

The most obvious way to spot a Catholic translation is that "Catholic Edition" is printed on the cover, but you can also tell by the imprimatur on the copyright page and the presence of the deuterocanonical books of the Bible-1 and 2 Maccabees, 'Wisdom of Solomon, Baruch, and Tobit, Judith, Sirach, additional parts of Daniel and Esther-which aren't found in Protestant versions of the Bible. Some call these books the apocrypha, which means "hidden," a term often used to refer to noninspired book. Even though several Protestant versions of the Bible are very good, from a Catholic standpoint they're incomplete. Several Catholic translations are available, but the version used at Mass-the one you're probably most familiar with-is the Ner'v American Bible, revised edition,
published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' A free online version is available on the USCCB website (usccb.org/bible/). The online version is helpful when you can remember a verse but not where to find it.
The website also has daily readings, podcasts, and other features that will help you move closer to God through Scripture. FR. PATRICK KEYES, CS.R sundaybulletin@liguori'org
