6OOD NEWS Acts 2:1-11 / 1 cot a2i3b-7, L2-r3 I Jn
2o:ry23
People respond to fear in two instinctive ways: fight or flight. The disciples chose to flee-hiding in an upper room, waiting for the ioast to clear. Of course they were afraid. Their teacher and Lord had been taken from them; the religious authori-ties did not like them. Even though Jesus wanted them to go into the world, they didn't have the slightest idea of what they would say and where they would go. Jesus promised to send them an Advocate who would guide them and reveal the truth to them, but they didn't know what that would look like. And into that locked room the Holy Spirit blew, bringing gifts of grace and strength they couldn't imagine. were they still afraid? Probably. Did they suddenly know what to do? Probably not. But they knew they could not be silent. Something compelled them to go out, confident that they had a gift to share with the world. What they couldn't have realized was that the Spirit fell on the wbrld that day as well-allowing those whose hearts were opened to hear the words of life preached by those who at one time didn't know what
to
say.
Pentecost is often referred to as the birth-day of the Church. The Church remains what it was at the first-imperfect women and men gifted by the Spirit to speak the Good News to other imperfect women and men who have been gifted to hear it. The Spirit blows through the world even now-the presence of God, our Advocate, who invites us to proclaim Christ to all and gives us the grace to MARY KATHARINE DEELEYs un daybulletin @ li guori. org do so.

Ed and Betty Coda are so excited about offering the Living in Love Mini-Retreat on June zt-zz,for all parishes. This workshop is the perfect way for married lovers
spark of excitement and romance in their .Betty the concepts they learned from the Living in that Ed & say relationship. Love weekend were the most instrumental in helping them live the passion that they describe in their book, Passionate Parent Passionate Couple. A trait of the strongest couples is that they partake in a renewal once a year. This would be a great way to do thatl lf you are a married couple, they ask you to consider spending a day and a half away from the pressures of daily life and just enjoy each other. lf you are not married, they ask you to pass this information on as a gift to a married couple who deserve to get away from it all. Don't hesitate to call them if you have any questions at 8o8-839-o837. You can also get more information and register at www. livin gin love.org

You may be surprised to know that the Ceneral Instruction of the Roman Mksal (154) calls for the priest to remain in the senctuary at the sign of peace to avoid disrupting the assembly's exchange. He has the option of exchanging a sign of peace with the ministers-it's optional because to do so repeats the first greeting of peace he just extended to Mondaq,)une9 5t. €phrem, Deacon & Doctor

everyone in the assembly. In the United States, an exception is made for special occasions such as weddinp, funerals, or when community leaders ere present. In those cases, the GIRM allows the priest to offer the sign of peace to people sitting near the sanctuary. Ironically, many parishioners view the presider's participation less as a distortion of the rite than as a positive indicator of their priest's social skills, as in "Father is such a people person!"
Offering-and being ofTered-an actual sign of Christ's peace during Mass is intended to be poignant, prayerful, and powerful, with a different kind of fanf*e than when greeters
welcome worshipers before Mass
