Genesis 18:1-1 0a / Colossians 1:24-28 / Luke 10:38-42

Are you hospitable? Do you welcome guests with ease and enjoyment? Even if you can't craft place settings or party invitations like Maftha Stewart, you can still be hospitable- someone others feel comfortable and at home with. Today's readings highlight the theme of hospitality and the rewards that follow. Abraham and Sarah welcome visitors who bring surprising news about Sarah's pregnancy. Sarah laughs in disbelief, but later discovers the astounding news to be true. Martha and Mary welcome Jesus to their home; overwhelmed by the responsibilities of hosting, Martha misses the treasure right before her-the opportunity to sit at Jesus'feet. ln addition to physical hospitality, Abraham, Sarah, and Martha also learn about hospitality of mind-allowing their minds to be open to new ideas about God's work in their lives. Abraham and Sarah couldn't imagine having a child in their old age. Martha didn't initially comprehend that sitting and conversing with .Jesus could supersede the responsibilities of hospitable service. But instead of holding on to their previous ideas about God, they opened their minds in hospitality and welcome to God's newness-and God came in. Are we as hospltable in mind as we are in our homes? Are we open to new ideas

and experiences of God? ls God able to do new things in our lives, possibly through unexpected people? Or are we rigid in our beliefs and so set in our ways that God can't get in? We may want to laugh with Sarah or complain with Maftha, but our best response is openness of mind and heart to the surprising ways of God. Janel Esker

we must attend Mass on Sundays and other holy days of obligation (7245) and that "for Ljust cause and according to the prescripts of the diocesan bishop, a pastor can grant in individual cases a dispensation from the obligation" (1246). There is leeway, and we're called to follow our conscience. That's why priests sometimes give different answers to the same question. If someone says, "I'm going camping with my daughter this weekend. The closest Catholic church is 50 miles away, and I won't have my own car," I'd say it won't be a sin to miss Mass and that she should spend time in prayer Sunday morning. But if she says, ^We're going to New York City and won't have time for Mass," I'd say, "The Archdiocese of New York has more than 350 parishes. I'm sure you can find one." 'We're never on vacation from our faith- Ifyou plan where you'll attend Mass just as you do the rest ofyour trip, you may discover a historic church, a widely recognized choir, or an award-winning homilist. But no matter where you go to Mass, you'll findJesus, waiting to nourish you with hisWord and feed you with his Body and Blood.
