ask for anything, what would it be? ln W. W. Jacobs' classic story "The Monkey's Paw," a couple's first wish is granted at a terrible price, and the owners realize what the old adage tells us: "Be careful what you wish
lf you could
for-you just might get it." In today's first reading, Solomon is given the opportunity to ask God for anything. After praying, he finally asks for wisdom, that he might discern what is right. God affirms the goodness of the wish and, noting that he didn't ask for riches or victory in war, grants it gladly. ln spite of some more questionable choices later in his life, Solomon will always be remembered for this request. Wisdom, as we find out in another part of Scripture, is God's "unfailing treasure; those who gain this treasure win the friendship of God" (Wisdom 7:r+). ln the Gospel, Jesus compares the kingdom of God both to a treasure and to someone who searches for one. I think the desire for the kingdom of God and the desire for wisdom come out of the same longing in our hearts. We might find God's wisdom in surprising places, but once we find it, we must be willing to give all we have to acquire it, for it will help us know what"is of

God.
At the same time, the kingdom of God goes in search of us. Maybe we are God's pearls; with Wisdom as a guide, each of us can grow as children and friends of God, knowing what is right. Find Wisdom, then, and do what you must to get it. When we do this, we will also find God.

st.
Damien, a decree was issued designating our Cathedral as a Minor Bascilica. The title of Minor Basilica is sometimes conferred on a church because of its historical, cultural, and liturgical distinction. A cathedral, of course, is a church that is the seat of the diocese, the place from which its chief shepherd, the bishop, presides over the community of love. The designation of Minor Basilica is an honor that links it in a special way to the Holy Father' Our own Cathedral, now to be known as the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, was dedicated in 1843, making it one of the oldest cathedrals in the United States

we usually think of the
Twelve, an emly tradition that the Church is a reconstituted Israel based on its original twelve tribes. In the Gospels of Matthew (10:24), Mark (3:14-19), and Luke (6:13-16) and in Acts of the Apostles (1:13, 16-18), all twelve apostles are named. Each list begins with Peter, followed by Andrew, James, and John, with Judas always last' Then, except for Philip and Thomas (listed in all four Gospels and in Acts), vmying translations me provided for the different names of the Twelve. John's Goqpel, which does not name all twelve, adds Nathanael (1:45-51)- Any of these could be mistaken for a thirteenth apostle. But your granddaughter is probably talking about Matthias' When the apostles gathered to choose areplacement for Judas lscmiot, two men were nominated: Joseph, also called Barsabbas, and Matthias. Before they chose, the apostles prayed,"1ft)u, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this apostolic ministry &om which Judas turned away to go to his own place" (Acts 1:24-J5). Then they voted by casting lots (throwing pebbles or straws), and the lots fell on Matthias. From then on, Maffhias was counted
