novel, or bring peace to the world. I did all of those things, and I also prayed I wouldn't mess things up too badly. That was a secret hope I didn't share with our children until they were
much older and it already seemed I hadn't done too much damage.
I can only imagine what Mary and Joseph thought when they brought Jesus to the Temple. Even though the angel Gabriel had revealed their son's identity, did they look at him and see the refine/s fire of Malachi's prophecy?
It's possible, but I think they saw him more as their beloved child. Mary had been told her son would be great, but did she know everything that meant? That's hard to see when your child is an infant in your arms. What we know is this: Mary and Jo-seph brought Jesus to the Temple, and two people who had been waiting all their lives for a sign from God took that child into their arms and into their hearts and saw in him the answer to their prayers and the fulfillment of their hopes. ln that moment, Mary and Joseph could simply hold their collective breath and pray for grace and strength to raise this child of God-and to hold their own hope out to him. Presentation of tlfr Lord, arryniore. Wlry celebratc it tliis year?
The Presentation of the Lord falls on February 2, forty deys after Christmas, so we celebrate it every year. F{owever, February 2 has fallen on a Sunday only nvo other times in the last trrenry-one years, so unless you auend weekday Mass, you're right-you haven't celebrated it much. Candlcmas is another name for our celebra-tion of the day Mary and Joseph presented their child to God in the Temple atJerusalem in accordance with the law of Moses (Luke 2:32-38). We remember how the elderly believers Simeon and Anna recognized Jesus as their longed-for Messiah and how, addressing God in a canticle (song), Simeon proclaimed Christ to be "a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory foryour people Israel." Mass on this day starts with a blessing and the lighting of candles, which the priest and people carry into the church. The name Candlemu springs from this ritual blessing.
ln 1997 , Pope John Paul II proclaimed the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord to also be the annual World Day Consecrated Life. Now many religious brothers, sisters, and priests mark the day by renewing their vows of religious con-secration and celebrating their special vocation within the Church. F r.
