Genesis r.8:zo-32 / Colossians

z:az-L4l Luke t 1:1-13

Jesus mustn't ha,ve been thinking about ten-month-olds when he suggested children would ask for safe items like eggs or fish. My daughter's interests include electrical outlets, fan blades, and knives, so I think she'd be happy if we gave her a scorpion or a snake. We spend a good amount of time telling her no, much to her chagrin. Sometimes she listens, sometimes she dse,s#t; and it doesn't seern to stop-her-from rA/anting to touch the same unsafe objects in an hour. Our daughter can't see the big picture as we, her parents, do. We can see that allowing her to stick her hand in a fan or outlet would lead to dreadful consequences; she sees only that we're denying her curiosity and fun.

And so it is with prayer and God. God can see the big picture-what is ultimately an egg for us versus a scorpion, what will bring us most abundant life. We, with our limited human minds, cannot. And so deep trust is required-we can pray for what we want and need, but we must fundamentally trust that God knows best what we need. Jesus says that all who seek will find and all who ask will receive. But he doesn't say "all who seek will find exactly what they are seeking" or "all who ask will receive specifically what they requested." Jesus isn't Santa Claus

working from our list of requests.

He simply says they will "find" and they will "receive." There will be an answer-but it's God's answer, not ours. Can we trust that God has the big picture in mind when he answers? Ja n el Eske r su ndayb

". . .today, as Brazil and the Church around the world celebrate this feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, Grandparents Day is also being celebrated. How important grandparents are for family life, for passing on the human and religious heritage which is so essential for each and every societyl How important it is to have intergenerationalexchanges and dialogue, especially within the context of the family. . "Children and the elderly build the future of peoples: children because they lead history forward, the elderly because they transmit the experience and wisdom of their lives". This relationship and this dialogue between generations is a treasure to be preserved and strengthenedl In this World Youth Day, young people wish to acknowledge and honour their grandparents. They salute them with great affection and they thank them for the ongoing witness of their wisdom. And now, in this Square, in all the surrounding streets, and in those homes that are experiencing this moment of prayer with us, we feel like one big family, and we turn to Mary, that she may protect ourfamilies and make them places of faith and love in which the presence of Jesus her Son is felt."

or Luke 10:38--42

You're asking a very good question: What does it mean to call yo=urself Ro-rn Catholic? The word cathalic (lowercase c) means "universal," which in turn means the Catholic Church is inclusive. But we do have limits.

Certain things define us as Roman Catholic, like our belief in the sacraments and the Trinity.'We need those to call ourselves Roman Catholic. But before we start excluding people for other reasons, we need to look at Scripture. John 4:742 tells the story of the Samaritan woman at the well. Matthew 9:10 tells us, 'TVhile [Jesus] was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples." In Matthew 2L:31, Jesus says, "Tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you." As I reread these passages, I thought, Jesus wanted to include too many people in the kingdom of God. That's probably what got him in trouble with the authorities. 'We must be very careful when we start drawing up lists of who shouldn't be part of the Catholic Church. Someone might thinkyou need to be left out too.
