LSL,LJI_' i\SE VV3 lz Timothy 3:r4-4:z / Luke rB::.-8 My mother claims her children inherited something from our father she calls "Esker-stick-to-itiveness." I thought she'd made the whole word up, but stick -to-itivenes.s is actually in the dictionary. lt means the ability to "stick" to something, see it through to completion. My father was much better than my mother at staying focused on a project through all its challenges, and my mother says it's part of mY DNA. Exodus r7:8-:r3

Today's readings speak directly to the concept of stick-to-itiveness. Moses must keep his hands raised to help the lsraelites in battle; his friends Aaron and Hur stick by him in supporting his tired arms. St. Paul encourages Timothy to "be persistent" in teaching and proclaiming the Gospel "whether it's convenient or inconvenient." And the persistent widow in the Gospel who strikes fear in the heart of the unjust judge is upheld by Jesus as a model of faith and unceasing prayer. Stick-to-itiveness appears not only to be a helpful quality in project completion, but also in discipleship. ln the face of personal challenges, a consumerist culture, and simple human weakness, it can be tempting to give up on praying, give up on sharing the Good News, give up on supporting others in their struggles. Today's readings should give us the boost we need to persist: Jesus clearly states that God will answer and provide for his beloved ones in his good time-not in our time, but God's. Confident in this promise and in the stick-to-itiveness in our discipleship DNA, we too can persist in faith, prayer, and the sharing of God's Good Janel Esker sundaybulletin@liguori.org News.

agree with you more. In fact the new rite of reconciliation suggests that, if at all possible, penance must right the wrong and be clear enough that the penitent knows he or she has fulfilled it. Penance should not just show God we're sorry; it should also put us on the path to a Christian life and correct the harm our sins

The most important thing is to persevere in your prayer life on your journey with God. St. Hilary once said that "grace depends mostly on perseverance in prayer." . Remember as Our Lord says in John's Gospel (Chapter 14, verse 2) "ln my Father's house [in heaven] there are many mansions...l go to prepare a place for you." Our Catholic prayers can help you prepare to "move in" to your true home in heaven, "that blessed fatherland from which we are all exiles," according to St. Aloysius Gonzaga. So come and explore the rich heritage of our Catholic prayers. lf at times you feel too intimidated or too distracted remember God is always there and ready to help. He'll help you find the grace you need to deal with the pressures and problems of daily life and to grow in His tove. A love this good is meant to be shared. These prayers are for all us. someone has stolen something and returning it would reveal their sin (this cannot be part of the penance), making a comparable donation might be a fitting penance. When someone confesses gossiping I challenge them to tell someone else something good about the person they gossiped about. In other words, instead of spreading pain, learn to spread joy. The penence for disobeying parents might be to do something nice for them or do chores without being asked. This type of penance is far more beneficial to the penitent and the community at large. Using preyer as e penance can send the signal that we pray only when we've been bad or need something from God, like forgiveness. On the cantrlry, prayer should be constant. We should pray always and in all ways, if for no other reeson than to grve glory to God.
