GOOD NEWS lsaiah 55:r-3 / Romans 8:35. 37-39 I Matthew

r4:r3-zr

Saturday, August 2:

A cookie jar sits on a table outside my office. Thin mints, Oreos, and chocolate chip cookies are there for the taking-free and welcome. Sometimes I wish it wasn't there, because the daily temptation is hard to resist, though I do rnost of the time. The cookies are part of our hospitality corner. Hot water for tea, coffee, and hot chocolate is also available. Students and associates come to take a break from studying or working and appreciate the refreshment. Over the years, many have then stopped by my office to talk about school, jobs, and the meaning of life" Who knew that such a little thing as free cookies would create such graced moments? Today we celebrate and remember the free gifts God has given to the human community. "Come to the waterr" lsaiah urges us; "God is good to all and compassionate; abounding in mercy," the psalmist cries out. St. Paul reminds us that nothing can separate us from God's love, and Jesus multiplies bread for thousands, making sure that all have what they need. We have only cookies in our jar, and the looks on people's faces tell me they're much enjoyed. How much more, then, do we welcome and need what is in God's cookie jar-love, life, mercy, forgiveness, and himself.r We lift up one another in welcome and conversation. God lifts all of us upteaching us, refreshing us, and showing us where we can participate in his hospitality by taking what he has given us and feeding others. Mary Katharin e Deeley sundaybulletin

We'ue been ckaning oilt mry late rnather's house and lmue discouered a ffeasure troue of old Biblu, statues, rosaries, and otlter sacramentals. Is

it OKto

sell them?

of the Church's Code of Canon Lmo says, "sacred objects are to be treated reverently and are not to be employed for profane or inapproPriate use even if they are owned by private persons." To keep Bibles and sacramentals from being exposed to vandalism, people have traditionally disposed of them by burning them, burying them, and even breaking them apart. A11 of these methods are acceptable as long as they're carried out with reverence and respect. To dispose of Palm Sunday palms, donate them to your parish to burn for Ash'Wednesday or break them up and burn them yourself, -[/e're not prohibited from selling religious items, because their spiritual value-like the blessing on a rosary or a Bible-cannot be bought or sold. A person who buys an old rosary, for instance, should have it blessed again because the blessing isn't included in the sale. My advice is to ask yotrr parish office for suggestions. They may know of a person or org nizltion who can use your items and will treat them as the sacred objects they are. Canon 1171
