l,m not much of a gardener. When our family was young, we planted vegetables to connect our children with the miracle of growing things' But the truth is, I kill house-plants regularly and the clay soil in our backyard made growing things a little harder than.l was willing to tolerate. So I spent my time tending to children and other pursuits. When I look at the wonderful young women my children have become, I don't regret any of it-they're evidence of a garden well tended.

We all have gardens we cultivate in the soil we work and in the lives we lead. ln today's readings, Isaiah and Jesus point to gardens of a different sort. lsaiah imagines God as the great gardener who brings flowers and trees out of arid sand and clay soil and then moves on to bring sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf. What a glorious image of a promise made-where we all grow and are made whole.

Jesus doesn't answer John's disciples; he simply points them in the direction of the garden of Good News he's tended. He sends them to John with tales of what they've seen and heard in all its abundance, because John will know a garden when he hears about it and will rejoice in its growth.

Finally, James, laboring in the Lord's garden decades after the Lord's death, reminds us of the truth every farmer, landscaper, and household gardener knows so well: Making things grow-whether crops, flowers, faith, or people- takes patience.

An antiplnz is a brief refrain, usually from the Bible, either sung or said during worship. An "O" antiphon is an antiphon that starts with O, as in "O Come, O Come Emmanuel"-sxgfi verse of that song is made up of an "O Antiphon."

The antiphons are most at home in the Liturgy of the Hours-the collection of psalms, hymns, prayers, and readings that make up the regular rhyhm of the Church's prayer et morning, midday, evening, and night. The "O Antiphons" your sister reGrs to are verses used during the Church's evening prayer from 'With one verse spoken or sung before December 17-23.

Mary's Magnificat each evening, these antiphons call on the Lord to come to his people using titles taken from the book of the prophet Isaiah.

When the "O Antiphons" are sung in Latin, they present e sort of acrostic with a hidden message. The first letter of each title in the antiphon spells sArcore, which is ero cras (Latin for "tomorrow I come" or "tomorrow I shall be") spelled backward.

In their original language and context, the "O Antiphons" have a particularly rich significance, but they remain beautiful even when sung simply in English as the verses of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel."
