LEADERSHIP

Dear La Porte Community,
I hope you had a wonderful and festive holiday season. It’s hard to believe that spring is just around the corner. The recent snowstorm that blanketed La Porte was a beautiful reminder of the power of nature, and I hope you were able to stay safe and enjoy the winter wonderland with your loved ones. As the snow is long gone, we look ahead to the exciting events and opportunities that the coming months will bring, including family-friendly festivals and parades as spring approaches.
There are many accomplishments in our district that are worth celebrating. In January, three La Porte High School Band students—Santiago Ballesteros, Evan Halbardier, and Richard Ortegon—were named to the prestigious Texas Music Educators Association’s All-State Band. This achievement is especially impressive, as they began their journey with a group of over 70,000 students. Additionally, La Porte High School celebrates another All-State performer: Chatos Captain Kaylee Hanks, who was honored in January as a member of the Texas Dance Educators Association’s All-State Dance Team.
The La Porte High School musical recently wrapped up its 2025 performance schedule of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which was a phenomenal production. This marked the 57th musical in the school’s history, continuing a tradition of excellence on stage thanks to our talented thespians, directors, musicians, stage crew, and community volunteers. Meanwhile, seven students from our award-winning fine arts program have their work on display at NRG throughout the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. These young artists are not only competing for significant scholarship opportunities but also gaining well-deserved recognition for their achievements.
Regarding the construction of the new Bulldog Stadium and Legacy Complex, I am pleased to report that we are still on track within the 18–24-month timeline we shared when the project began. Though most of the remaining work is focused on the interior—such as wiring, plumbing, and fixture installation—weather does impact the exterior projects. I’ve been given reasonable assurance that, if the stadium project stays on schedule, the 2025 graduation will be held in the new facility.
In the meantime, other Bond 2023 projects are being completed across the district, including new playgrounds, technology and security upgrades, new school buses, and various infrastructure improvements.
Finally, please join me in congratulating our Bulldogs and Lady Dawgs on their outstanding basketball seasons. They represented our city very well as they progressed into the playoffs. There are plenty more opportunities to cheer on our students as soccer, softball, baseball, and track & field are in full swing. I encourage you to join me at a game or two. Your presence truly motivates our student-athletes and helps build team spirit, strengthening the bond between students and the community.
Thank you to the entire La Porte community for your continued support of La Porte ISD. Your involvement helps us maintain our legacy of excellence for both students and staff.
In your service,
Dr. Walter Jackson

SAFE & SECURE CERTIFIED
La Porte ISD Achieves Region 4 Certification in School Safety and Security
La Porte ISD has successfully been certified through the Region 4 School Safety and Security Recognition program, a pivotal initiative designed to enhance the safety and security measures within Texas schools. This long-term support system aims to empower staff while ensuring compliance with the Texas Education Code.
The certification is the first in Texas and reflects the district’s commitment to creating a safe learning environment by participating in comprehensive safety audits and customized training programs. This evidence-based program not only enhances school safety awareness but also builds operational capacity among PK-12 staff to meet evolving safety standards.
The Region 4 program provides essential resources, including annual assessments and a District Audit Report, enabling schools to identify vulnerabilities and implement proven solutions. With a team of assessors from diverse public safety backgrounds—ranging from law enforcement to clinical psychology—La Porte ISD benefits from over 25 years of combined experience to enhance our emergency management and school safety skills.

Moreover, the program includes fire safety standards to ensure compliance with local regulations, further bolstering the safety protocols across all campuses in the district.
La Porte ISD’s certification signifies a robust commitment to safeguarding its students and staff, paving the way for a more secure educational environment.

BOND 2023 PROGRESS
The La Porte ISD 2023 Bond projects are progressing well, with the Bulldog Stadium and Press Box nearing completion. The turf on the field has been finished, and the track has been freshly striped. Inside the press box, final touches are being applied. The installation of the scoreboard, speaker system, and necessary technology for the facility is scheduled to occur soon. The Press Box is expected to be completed by the end of February, while the Legacy Center and Field House are projected to finish in June. Graduations scheduled for May will take place at this impressive facility, providing an opportunity for everyone to see it in person.
Construction has commenced on the new competition gym at Lomax Junior High, with dirt work underway and piers being dug for the foundation, along with plumbing and electrical work. This bond project will provide Lomax with a muchneeded competition gym for their teams and students.
Elementary playgrounds across the district have received sun shades, offering essential shade to children during recess. Future planning for other Bond 2023 projects is underway, including the development of plans for the renovation of the LPHS old competition gym and entry/commons areas.

Bulldog Football Ends Season With Historic Success
The La Porte Bulldogs Football Team had a season for the ages in 2024, winning their second consecutive District Championship and advancing to the UIL State Quarterfinals for the first time since 2011.
The team features 25 All-District and 20 Academic All-District players, including three district superlatives. They were coached by another district superlative, the 2024 11-5A Coach of the Year and Touchdown Club of Houston Coach of the Year finalist, Kevin Berneathy.

RUNNING CLUB Running Into Fun: La Porte Elementary School Club Races to Success
La Porte Elementary School physical education teacher Tracey Guidry has instilled a love for fitness in her students—so much so that 70 of them come out after school each Wednesday for the school’s Run Club.
On Run Club days, students meet in the gymnasium for a quick snack (an apple and protein bar) and then head out to run around the auxiliary football field behind neighboring La Porte Junior High. Club members were chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis (with many more on a waiting list) but must also be passing all of their classes and exhibit good behavior in the classroom.
The students take their running seriously and work hard to increase both their speed and the number of miles they run. Members of the La Porte High School girls track team came to demonstrate proper stretching techniques. During football season, when the high school teams practiced on the field, the players even cheered on the young runners.
“One third-grade girl has run 28 miles on the track!” Guidry said. “Every student has increased how many laps they can do on the timed mile and pacer (30-meter run).”
The Run Club is an offshoot of the regular physical education classes, where pre-K through fifth grade students run every day. Throughout the year as she teaches the various P.E. units, students run with the additions of basketballs, hockey sticks and jump ropes. A former second-grade teacher who became the school’s P.E. coach eight years ago, Guidry said that this is the first time that 100 percent of her students can run a mile.
Guidry, who also coached soccer for many years, looks for ways to pique her students’ interest in physical activity and make it fun for them. When she found that many of the students were excited about hitting the track, the Run Club was a natural progression fueled by their interest and enthusiasm.

“The kids were wanting more running, and I see so much potential in them,” she said.

EXCEPTIONAL SOUNDS
La Porte H.S. Senior Researches Potential of Music for Students with Exceptionalities

For his research display at San Jacinto College’s Honors Symposium, judges ranked Halbardier’s submission as among the best and awarded him a $200 scholarship. He will also travel to Pittsburgh, PA in April for the National Conference for Undergraduate Research for which his research earned him an expenses-paid trip for his research. Following his graduation from San Jacinto College and La Porte High School in May, Halbardier plans to attend Stephen F. Austin University, where he will study to become a music teacher.
Music is often called a universal language, a bridge between cultures and hearts. But recent research by La Porte High School senior Lucas Halbardier revealed that music education might also enhance learning for students with disabilities.
For his advanced course in Teaching at San Jacinto College, Halbardier conducted an in-depth exploration of the topic, and his literature review uncovered how music not only aids in cognitive development but also strengthens social-emotional skills and motor function—areas that can be particularly challenging for these students.
Cognitive Development: Music as a Tool for Learning
Music has a profound impact on cognitive skills. For students with learning disabilities, music provides mnemonic devices, like songs to teach the alphabet or times tables, helping them retain information more effectively. Music can also boost IQ, enhance language skills, and accelerate problem-solving.
For children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), music serves as a vital communication tool, often encouraging vocalization and verbal interaction when traditional language skills are difficult.
“By activating the same neural pathways used in reading, music can enhance phonological processing and literacy, helping students who struggle with these skills,” Halbardier said. “For instance, the simple tune of The Alphabet Song or songs that teach times tables can cement basic skills that students can use throughout their lives.”
Social and Emotional Development: Music as Connection
Music education doesn’t just foster academic growth—it also nurtures emotional and social development. For students with exceptionalities, social-emotional learning is key. In Texas, SEL is mandated in schools, and when combined with music, it has the power to strengthen emotional recognition, stress management, and relationship-building.
“For example, a simple song like If You’re Happy and You Know It can help students with ASD or emotionalbehavioral disorders match emotions with music, promoting emotional awareness and social engagement,” Halbardier said about his findings. “Music can also be a therapeutic tool, helping students with anxiety or EBD regulate emotions and create a calmer, more focused classroom environment.”
Motor Skills: Moving Through Music
Halbardier also found that music provides vital support in developing motor skills for students with motor impairments. Activities like clapping to the beat or playing percussion instruments help improve coordination and rhythm. Music therapy is particularly beneficial for children with cerebral palsy, helping them develop balance and movement skills.
Halbardier’s research shows that different instruments contribute to motor development in unique ways. String instruments like the violin promote bilateral coordination, while wind instruments improve finger isolation. Each musical activity offers students a sense of accomplishment, boosting their confidence and encouraging physical growth.
“I ultimately learned that music education is not just an extra—it’s a transformative tool,” Halbardier said. “For students with exceptionalities, it offers pathways to cognitive growth, emotional understanding, and motor skill development, helping them unlock their full potential.”

2025 MUSICAL
The La Porte High School Theatre and Music Department’s presented the musical “JosephandtheAmazingTechnicolorDreamcoat,” a production by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. This timeless story about Joseph is based on a biblical tale from the book of Genesis.
It is the story of Joseph who, as the favored son of Jacob, is given a beautiful coat of many colors. Joseph’s 11 brothers are jealous of the attention he receives from their father. They are also bothered by Joseph’s dreams and his talent for interpreting them. As a result, the brothers sell Joseph into slavery, and he is taken to Egypt. The brothers then tell their father that Joseph lost his life protecting them. Though beset with adversity, Joseph perseveres through wit and faith. He develops a plan to help prepare Egypt for a great famine, leading the Pharaoh to appoint Joseph as his second in command. Years later, driven by hunger from the famine, the brothers make their way to Egypt to beg for food. Joseph realizes that his brothers do not recognize him, so after giving them sacks of grain, he devises a way to test them. He plants a golden cup in young Benjamin’s sack. As the brothers go to leave, Joseph stops them and accuses them of stealing his golden cup. Once it is revealed to be Benjamin, the brothers beg for mercy and ask that one of them take young Benjamin’s place. Joseph, seeing their unselfishness and penitence, reveals himself and releases Benjamin. Jacob makes his way to Egypt and the family has a joyful reunion.
This year marked the 57th musical production since the program’s inception by the late Sonja Angelo. This year’s production was dedicated to Sonja’s husband Jack Angelo who has been a steadfast supporter of this program. “You, Jack Angelo, are truly one of this program’s greatest supporters, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” read the dedication.

The production was a great success with over 250 students, parents, community members, and district staff working tirelessly to make it happen.

PERFORMING ARTS ALL-STATE
Three Bulldog Band Members Named to All-State Band
La Porte High School is represented in both the brass and percussion sections of the 2025 Texas Music Educators Association All-State Band. It is the second time for La Porte band students to earn All-State honors since 2015.
Percussionist Santiago Ballesteros, trumpet player Richard Ortegon and French horn player Evan Halbardier were named to the elite band after Jan. 11 auditions. To reach the milestone, they had to audition multiple times in a process that began with more than 70,000 band students from across Texas.
The road to All-State begins in July when audition music is released to students. In December they competed for a chair in the All-Region Band. A select few of those students advance to All-Area, where they compete for All-State.
“All-State Band students are the top 2.6% of Texas band students,” said Head Band Director Jason Harvey. “These students worked diligently and competed at the highest level to represent our band program, school, and school district.”
The TMEA All-State Band will perform in February at the organization’s annual clinic/convention in San Antonio, which more than 30,000 people from Texas and around the world are expected to attend.

Senior Chatos Captain Makes All-State Dance Team

Chatos Senior Captain Kaylee Hanks represented La Porte High School in early January as a member of the Texas Dance Educators Association All-State Dance Team.
Her selection to this prestigious group highlights Hanks’ dedication and talent in drill team performance. Schools can only be represented by one dancer on the All-State team.
All-State dancers participated in the association’s annual convention in Houston Jan. 8-10, which included dance workshops, leadership training, master classes, and networking with other students.
The All-State Dance Team experience culminated in a performance for thousands of convention participants that was choreographed by a master choreographer.
Jeannine Watson is the Chatos director.

Bullseye! JROTC Archery Team Finds Early Success
In just its second year, the La Porte High School JROTC Archery Team has already made a significant mark, thanks to the vision of Capt. Hector Echevarria.
Recognizing the importance of offering students a wellrounded education, Echevarria introduced the program to the school district with the goal of building discipline, focus, and teamwork through the sport of archery.
“It’s about more than just hitting a target; it’s about personal growth and developing a sense of achievement,” Echevarria said. The team’s quick success speaks to the strong foundation he’s laid, fostering an environment where young athletes can excel both on and off the range. With dedication and skill, the team is already setting its sights on even greater accomplishments in the years ahead.
The team competed on Jan. 30 at Clear Lake High School in the Area Archery Meet. Each student was required to shoot 5 arrows at a time from various distances to display accuracy and consistency.
