AGRICULTURE & EXTENSION EDUCATION

TEACHING IN FORMAL EDUCATION AGRICULTURAL LEADERSHIP & DEVELOPMENT

EDUCATION IS LIFE Do you want to change lives? You don’t mind getting your hands dirty to teach an important lesson? Do blue FFA jackets and green 4-H clovers bring a smile to your face? Our Department of Agricultural & Extension Education & Evaluation prepares future leaders to become educators in schools and extension professionals in the community. They help farmers and gardeners produce better crops, teach families about nutritious foods and lead high

schoolers to discover a passion for plants and animals. This department focuses on two of Louisiana’s greatest assets — the agriculture industry and our people. Students learn about effective teaching methods and techniques from worldclass faculty as they prepare for careers in both formal environments, such as high schools, and non-formal areas, including the cooperative extension service, where they help the community learn about agriculture and nutrition.

FACILITIES Students have access to two agriculture technology shops that allow them to learn hands-on agricultural mechanics skills. Students are also placed in intensive internships where they earn valuable real-world career experience.

CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS For students who are looking to remain active in FFA after high school or who want to support agricultural education, Collegiate FFA at LSU is a dynamic organization that welcomes a diverse student population.

CONCENTRATIONS

Teaching in Formal Education: Brighten the future. Learn hands-on lessons in agriculture, science, and education. This concentration prepares students to teach agriculture in the state of Louisiana and positively impact young lives.

Agricultural Leadership & Development: This broad-based curriculum covers all areas of technical agriculture as well as leadership, communications, and informal instruction. Unique opportunities for professional and leadership development, coupled with hands-on learning, will prepare you to communicate your passion for agriculture throughout the country.

BECOME A HIGHLY QUALIFIED PROFESSIONAL.

OUTSTANDING ALUMNI Kelly Becnel brings a passion for agriculture to the classroom. Becnel is an agriculture science teacher at Walker High School. She received her undergraduate degree in vocational education from LSU in 2006 and is working on a master’s degree in agricultural and extension education. Becnel was an active FFA member while she was in high school. She aspired to become a veterinarian but realized she could find more fulfillment with people than animals. “I wanted to give back to FFA and to students and do the job the way my

advisor did,” Becnel said. Becnel teaches about plants, animals, agriculture mechanics, and wildlife. As FFA members, her students also learn about professionalism, leadership, and communication and life skills. Even when she is not teaching, Becnel’s classroom is often filled with students who are working on projects, seeking her advice or just finding a place where they can belong. “Knowing that I am making difference is worth way more than my paycheck,” Becnel said.
